  1. I agree for the most part of this discussion. However, While I see similarities to the 90s in terms of variants for modern books. I don't believe this is bringing new money into the hobby. It's mostly publishers trying to squeeze $ out of the existing readership. I think most of the speculators for variants are coming from the kids who grew up in the 90s and remember the latest holofoil X-Men cover by Jim Lee from that time and how the price skyrocketed (even though there were a million of them). With regard to movie hype, both Marvel and DC's market research has shown that the movies are not bringing new readers into the market. The fans who became fans because of the movies are buying other movie related merchandise (toys, blurays, videogames, t-shirts) not comics. And the movie key back issue market is mostly collectors selling and buying from dealers and other collectors. There is no one new. It's certainly not 12 and 13 year olds snapping up a mid grade MSH 13 for 600 bucks.
  2. Thank you. It's a weird feeling when you acquire some books like these, never thought I would. Cheers.
  3. ASM 9 $300 4.5 LCBS Fantastic Four 3 $665 3.5 Website Flash 123 $400 3.5 LCBS 16642 remaining 95/250 Books ASM 9 is slabbed so the pic is a little off. Haven't broken it out yet.
  4. I agree with this. I have never understood the movie hype as most of the characters have been around for decades in other media too. Maybe some of the older dealers can tell us if JIM Thor got a bump in price when he appeared in The Incredible Hulk TV movie😁? It's mostly musical chairs with speculators and then dealers gobbling up copies to sell off at higher price to those speculators. Shang chi was just announced as being in development. I have a 7.5 copy I purchased (1st App) 2 weeks ago for 60 bucks. The announcement was last week. The book is 5x that price now in similar grade. Nobody gave two $#;+s about that character until last week. It's both hilarious and sad all at the same time.
  5. Reminds me of the B&W Uncanny X-Men 94 variant at one of my local stores that has been there forever. Fluorescent lighting just destroys color.
  6. If your interested in a 1 day show. This is more of an old school show. One of the rooms is exclusively comic dealers. http://www.canadiancomics.net/comicshow.html

  9. Something like this would be nice...??
  10. Avengers 7 $114 5.0 EBay Avengers 11 $86 4.0 EBay Avengers 12 $28 3.0 Con Avengers 13 $72 6.5 EBay Avengers 14 $21 3.5 Con $18007 remaining 92/250 Books
  11. I think it more depends on your level of financial security. An FF #1 2.0 is about $4000 or more. I'm not flipping through that on a whim. Unless I'm sitting in my 100% Corithian leather chair and lighting my cigars with hundreds.?
  12. Title is simple enough. As I usually swim in the shallow end of collecting pool the majority of my key books would be considered "Reader copies" by some eventhough they may cost a few hundred dollars in the grade they are in. I'm wondering what the majority of forumites would consider a Reader Copy?
  13. Funny thing is all of them use GPA and Ebay sold listings for their pricing. One shop will list their books at GPA+10% and then give a discount cause "they like you". Guess how much the discount is??
  14. I would try to either sell or consign to a big online dealer/Auction or do it yourself on Ebay. The last place I would sell to is a Canadian LCS. It has been my experience when I've tried to sell books (not drek, good solid bronze and copper keys) that they lowball pretty badly with no wiggle room. I had GS X-MEN 1 CGC 5.0 that I wanted to sell 3 years ago as I upgraded my copy. The highest offer I got from 6 shops was 40% of OSPG. One guy tried to justify his offer by saying that it wasn't a very in demand book. ?
  15. One closed near me, had a going out business sale, then reopened with "new" ownership in the same location. Most of the comic shops in my area are basically Magic/Board Game/Pop Culture stores. "COMICS! Those are in the back, Nerd!"?
  16. I get that you like Deadpool. However, all of his mainstream success is due to the movies not to the comics or a videogame. You could say Ryan Reynolds is more directly responsible for Deadpools popularity and success than anything Marvel has ever published for the character. Most of my friends when the first X-Men movie came out asked me "the comic guy" who the characters were save for the one with the claws who they knew as Wolverine.
  17. My original point of the post was that a characters popularity in comics gained mainstream attention that led to companies approaching Marvel to licence the character for pajamas, t-shirts, cartoons etc. Using Spider-Man, as an example, his popularity sky rocketed within the first year of the characters release. He gained the majority of his mainstream popularity because of his comics not because of a TV show or Movie. Deadpools mainstream popularity was gained because of the movie, not his comics.
  18. Even now if you showed a picture of Spider-Gwen to a person on the street right now they would have no idea who she was. Same with Deadpool four years ago.
  19. "drives all the other media appearances" would mean that the stories and art from the comics would be used for TV, movies, merchandise etc. Like how JRs Spider-Man art is used for the Spideys t-shirts, mugs etc. 40 years later.
  20. I would say characters like Deadpool, Harley Quinn, X-23 had little if any recognition outside of comics until the movies hit and became mainstream. None of their popularity in the outside world was generated through the comics they appeared in.
  21. Coming out of few discussions on the forum, I was wondering if we will ever see a character created in comics again that becomes popular through the medium of comics and drives all the other media appearances. A friend of mine made the arguement that Spider-Man was the last comic character that this happened (50 years ago!) with and there has not been a crossover character since thats popularity grew out of the comics into other areas. I think that ship has sailed personally and the dog will forever wagged by its tail (movies/TV). Thoughts?
  22. Yeah, I knew I would get called out for choosing #1s but it was just to make a point about the cover being the thing that sells to younger readers. That's why I think DC has purposely made their new 100 pagers have throwback covers. Heck, most of any merchandise that DC or Marvel puts out now rarely features any artwork from post 1990, most of it is stuff from the 50s, 60s and 70s. Also here are some comparison covers from when the characters were more established.
  23. Looking at the DC 100 pages at WalMart really drove home for me that other than the high price driving children away from purchasing comics on their own, Modern covers lack the hook or enticement to get you to buy what's on the inside based on the cover. Almost all the covers now regardless of genre or tone are geared towards adult buyers (artgerms covers especially getting into a very pinup/comehither look that 8 year olds especially like?). Comparing just a couple of covers from the SA to modern counterparts drives this home even more for me. I'm not saying the art is not good on some of the Modern covers but they are not "selling" the book. Thoughts?
  24. I always felt this was a send off to Swan as much as it was to the Silver/Bronze Age Superman.
