  1. I'd do it a little differently when ranking by backstory. 1. Okajima (little Japanese girl collecting comics in an Internment camp? Wow) 2. Promise 3. SF 4. Church (Although really SF and Church could change rank depending on my mood.) 5. Allentown (All number #1s or first appearances. )
  2. Post a picture of your 9.4, please.
  3. I have a soft spot for covers that show television in the 40s. Seriously, special effects and everything! This Human Torch cover is also one of my favorites. Managed to snag it at an OafCon in Norman Oklahoma a few years ago.
  4. Go for it, man! I collect across the entire spectrum so I'd love to see them!
  5. Marty is still reading the boards but is still unable to post. He wants those who care to know he is alive and well and still after Stuntman #3!
  6. Very nice! I tried hard for the 9.0 #291 but lost. Tried to rush over to eBay to buy the 8.5 that was over there but it was gone.
  7. I agree on the price. I think if it comes up for sale it will go cheaper. A frozen Gold or Mummy's Ring in 9.8 would be awesome to see. A 9.8 Poor Old Man would bring Nordic Royalty out to hawk their Crown Jewels. It would set a record on a Barks book for sure.
  8. I now own 2 of the Promise books and, just like with the Mile Highs, you have to hold them in hand to truly appreciate how nice they are regardless of grade. The inks and cover gloss are remarkable. Of course, the 108 has versions with and without cover gloss so
  9. Love this book! Somehow I ended up with 2 of them and that does not upset me.
  10. Always been one of my favorite covers. real head scratcher that I've never owned one. Looks like a copy I'd be happy to own!
  11. Subby riding treads to treads riding pejoratives
  12. captain america with blonde chained to a plank to captain america with blonde shackled to a, umm, panini press?
  13. Nothing wrong with the low grade pool. Especially with the prices these Timelys are hitting now. Here is my favorite subby.
  14. That is how my 6.0 subby is. The gloss can be seen through the slab! Insane for a GA book.
  15. Back in the day, most people I spoke with just looked confused. They could not understand anyone treating comic books seriously. In the 1980s, this began to change. I bought G.I. Joe #2 at a grocery store and the checker asked if that book was worth any money. I knew that it was low print run, I don't remember how I knew that, and said it was worth more than cover price. She very seriously responded, "Only if you can find someone willing to pay." Almost a sneer but I've never been quite sure if she was just being truthful or just sceptical. By the 1990s, it seems like everyone knew that SOME comics could be valuable and my hobby no longer caused confusion or sneers in mass. That is one reason why the lawyer I worked with shocked me so much. It had been quite a while since my hobby had generated that much scorn. My response in trying to humiliate him in turn was a base action but he really annoyed me. Turns out he had annoyed quite a few others and paid the price.
  16. Actually, it was rather strange at the time. He quit bugging me and even helped the CSO do a subtle offline interview to see if I could be the Director of Biotechnology. The quickly discovered answer? No. Definitely not my wheelhouse.
  17. Back in 96/97 I worked with a lawyer who, along with his admin assistant, made merciless fun of my comic hobby. Then I discovered he collected diecast military vehicles. I made him explain the "Tootsie toy" he kept in his pocket during a board meeting where these gruff old men were not amused that their corporate lawyer carried around a toy. It was surprisingly brutal, and I ended up feeling guilty, with one asking him if his security blanket was kept in his other pocket. Found out later that he was notorious for "kidding on the square" and had pissed off everyone in the room at least once. It was his power play go-to and they all leapt at the chance for payback.
