I didn't realize DS13 was so tough. My copy is in the batch I just submitted to CGC. Cover separated from lower staple, but presents very nicely. I'll let everyone know what this submission batch grade out at when I know. Throw some grades at me!

Universal or Qualified Label?
Yorick replied to My young Padawan's topic in Comic Book Grading and Restoration Issues
That's a good example. I guess I won't be submitting high grade remainders if they can only achieve a 0.5. Maybe I need to look into restoration. THANK YOU! -
HAHA. After that he gave up and just filled in the lampshade....

Universal or Qualified Label?
Yorick replied to My young Padawan's topic in Comic Book Grading and Restoration Issues
I like that idea of putting both qualified and standard grades on the label. What do remaindered/return copies grade at (title logo of the cover cut off and missing)? 1.0? I assume it hurts the grade most since it's such a glaring defect. What grade level does the remainder copy need to achieve in order to gain Qualified status? Above 5.0? -
Alright, this officially sucks. Trying to pick only ten REALLY hurt. Here we go (in alphabetical order): 1. Authentic Police Cases #7 2. Cinderella Love #25 3. Cinderella Love #27 4. Diary Secrets #16 5. Diary Secrets #25 6. Going Steady #10 7. Phantom Lady #18 8. Teen-age Romances #32 9. Teen-age Romances #43 10. Wartime Romances #3

Which copy has better page quality? Perhaps if your coverless has white pages then move the cover over there (a simpler process than an interior page). Popping staples is difficult without damaging the book, especially with old St Johns (newsprint). Then you have to worry about alignment. I would recommend NOT trimming. Collectors seem to hate that and it really devalues the book. I took staples out of a St John that had been rusting, flattened all the pages to undo spine roll, and finally refolded the whole book. It looks a lot better and now I won't have to worry about rust. I did not put the staples back (which should result in a qualified grade if I were to have it graded). I do have boxes of 1950's staples that could probably fool CGC if I was worried about a qualified grade, but I don't mind qualified books at all. Who cares about staples in a slabbed book anyway? I am very curious what book you are considering working on. Share? Perhaps I've got an extra to sell you....

Benson's book (Confessions, Romances, Secrets and Temptations) has a checklist of all the St John stuff, and that's one which is handy enough. Gonna get my shovel out and do some digging here...

That Teen-age Romances 31 has real nice centering. My copies are all off-center so that the leftmost word balloon is partially cut off. Really like your "man-cave". Would be so much fun to dig around in there!

I like #14 slightly more than this one, but I chose to not to include any Wild Boy in my top 34....

Everyone shooting single issues out into the void here.... I've narrowed my favorites into 34 issues, but I need help with the jungle stuff. Is there a list where I can find which covers of Jumbo or Jungle Comics are attributed to Baker (if there are any)? And you guys with the APC stuff - WHERE IS #7?!

You get free detailed notes with the Elite membership, but everyone else has to pay. I imagine you would need a free account to request them in the first place. -
Sweet copy! What are the remaining 9? I might just put all the Cindy Loves on my list....

Yorick replied to earlyactions-migration's topic in Golden Age Comic Books
I know I know. I just wanted someone to spill the beans and let me know just how much of that cover is a photocopy and which parts. Oh well, it now means I won't have to bid and spend several thousand $$!! -
Maybe a new thread so that it doesn't need to strictly be "Baker Romance"? I mean, the APC series does not exactly work here. That Amazing Ghost Stories 14 might be a contender... What about Nightmare? Not that it's cover work, but I am really loving those Nugget postings over in the Rarest Romance thread.
-
How about that: only one Authentic Police Cases #38 on the census. I'm going to submit a batch of Bakers, and I'm sending an APC38 within it. Who wants to give it a grade based on a low resolution front cover only scan?
-
I suppose its worth it now that the older posted images are loading. So much to catch up on....
-
Has this thread done a "top ten Baker covers" yet? If yes, what page do I go to? If no, what are you waiting for?
-
How far into Nugget does Baker's work go? Beyond just the first issue?
-
THANK YOU THANK YOU! Awesome thread/post. No contradictions to what has been written above.
