I can't remember talking about it on the podcast (maybe I have, but my memory runs short these days...unless I'm holding a grudge). But yes, the existence of 181 became known to certain collectors at SDCC 2017.

That was when I ran into an old acquaintance, someone who's not involved in OA in any way. He said he had come across something recently that I might be interested in seeing. He pulled up a pic on his phone: It was the OA cover for HULK #181.

My first thought was maybe this was one of Trimpe's recreations. But there were other clues in the pic that made it seem possible this could be the real thing.

I asked my friend if I could share this pic with some collecting buddies at the show. He said no way, that this was for my eyes only. He half-admitted that he may have taken this picture surreptitiously (he didn't realize what a big deal it was until I let on, and then realized maybe he shouldn't have just taken a shot of it). I then asked if it was OK if I only showed a few select others the pic from *my* phone, but didn't distribute the pic otherwise. That he was OK with; he'd known me long enough to know I wouldn't burn him. It was just too good not to show a handful of friends at the show.

Gene was one of the few I showed the pic to. We all pretty much agreed that it LOOKED good...but without seeing it in person, couldn't say 100% for sure if it was the real thing or a recreation.

Fast-forward another year or so, and it turns out it was the real thing, and that real thing might be available for the right price. Beyond that...no comment.

But it's been long enough otherwise to share the "SDCC phone pic" story. If/when the art does sell, maybe I'll get some of the principals together again for a podcast.

Oh WOW, hey nexus thanks for sharing the back story.......love to hear about these exciting finds🤯

What sort of condition what the hulk 181 OA cover in?

DO you know if any interior art exists?

I would love just to own a full size trimpe recreation!

IIRC it was around 2017-18 (plus or minus a year on either end) that its existence became known. And then there were rumors flying left and right about it being for sale privately, and offers north of $2 million being thrown about and snags being hit and ultimately nothing happening. And now, with the market doing what it's been doing, there's been renewed speculation that maybe it will finally hit the auction block.

Felix talked about it on a Felix Comic Art podcast a while back; can't remember which episode it was, though. Maybe it's mentioned in one of the episode descriptions or maybe someone remembers which one it was.

I don't know what it would sell for, but, I'd say it would almost certainly break the Zeck page's record. The only question is by how much...

    Thanks for the info gene

I was chatting with a major comic art dealer who mentioned he had two collectors who told him they would pay $4 million if the dealer could procure the art

  3. If you don't include the SW8 zeck page, then would the DK1 cover be a price record for OA?

I think the SW8 page will prove to be a one off anomaly.

The prices for the OA IN this auction seemed still very high across the board.

Those two killing joke pages over $100k each??!!🤯

Definitely not the pinnacle of the hobby, but, a great, iconic piece which had the potential to do better in the eyes of many. I guess in the end, the X-Men #1 wraparound cover did slightly better (I'd much rather have that one, personally) and we know the Hulk #181 cover will do an enormous price if/when it comes to auction.

Well, there have only been a handful of public 7-figure sales to date and I don't think we know if any of them went to the house. Even yesterday's sale could have been one guy bidding at that $2M hammer level and maybe we'll even see the piece surface in the coming days/weeks.

There are so many big 5 and 6 figure OA sales and 5, 6 and 7 figure comic book sales these days that I feel like Occam's Razor would suggest that there's just a lot of people with bags of money that have been spending the past few years. We'll see how long it continues, though, as more and more (paper) wealth keeps getting vaporized in the markets.

Hey gene, does the cover OA for hulk 181 actually exist? For real??

Would be fantastic if it does!
