Hi - its Michael and I don't think I've pimped Golden Age art -- I like it and I tell everyone I like it and I hope folks will sell me Golden Age art but I don't think I've told people to go buy it nor have I tried to sell it, either of which is (at least to me) required to meet the term "pimping." If your point is that GA art (which I love) will not be of much interest to future collectors, that is probably true. That doesn't mean I'll stop wanting it or loving it. I just thought I'd add my two cents to say that it was a bit unfair to say I've pimped GA art as I've not told people to go buy it nor tried to sell it. I've just said it is what I like. I've not tried to convince others to buy it.

So, its SDCC 2017 and I am walking around. I pass by the Heritage Booth and there in the display, I see the Golden Age cover below and that it is coming up for auction. I was a huge fan of the Invaders, a huge fan of the Justice Society and a huge fan of the All-Star Squadron but somehow it never really occured to me that I could buy an actual Golden Age cover. Seeing this cover turned a light on -- I'd been collecting art for years at that point but was so focused on bronze and modern that I probably never "saw" any of the Golden Age covers that surely passed by my eyes. But, this time...wow... I'd seen this cover many times in books about the history of comics (I love to read about the history of our hobby) and it just spoke to me -- I knew in that moment that I had to win it - I told everyone I knew that I was going to win it at auction no matter what (rookie mistake for sure) and then I went ahead and won it at auction. And, yes, as expected, it changed the entire course of my collecting as I then went on a Golden Age tear buying up as much as I could and as much as I ever can -- when I look at my Golden Age collection, it is hard to believe (at least to me) that I've acquired it all in the past 3.5 years -- something clicked that day in San Diego and I don't really see myself every looking back. -

My cousin Brian had a small comic collection that I would look at and read whenever I went to his house. This is 1972 and I'm 6 years old -- he was an electric guitar, a water bed and a bunch of comics -- King Kong, Sad Sack, Spy v Spy books, some romance and two super-hero comics -- one of them was Justice League of America #101 featuring the JLA, the JSA and the Seven Soldiers of Victory. I knew most of the JLA but had never heard of the Justice Society and who the heck were the Seven Soldiers of Victory - I read and re-read this comic a million times. ONE IMPORANT THING - his comic resonance was missing its cover - so page 1 was the first page of the comic. I loved this comic and would go visit my cousin whenever I could. Flash forward - I'm a collector and I always look for anything from this trilogy but never ever find it....then, one day, I see the page with Frank Giella. I told Frank how much this page meant to me, that I could not imagine ever selling it were he to part with it, etc., etc. Well, Frank and I ultimately agree to do a deal -- I was over the moon - and have been to this day - to own the first page of the first super-hero comic I ever read (and really to me it is the cover since my cousin's book didn't have a cover) -- well, this is priceless. So, here is: Justice League of America #101 p.1 - Dillin and Joe Giella - JLA, JSA and Seven Soldiers of Victory -

Butcher job on All-Star Squadron #9
Michael (OML)1 replied to Brian Peck's topic in Original Comic Art
I spoke to Bechara - he was planning to make disclosure as soon as Brian brought it to his attention. Not much else he can do other than disclose which he will. Bechard talked to the seller and the seller got it this way too so the alteration was done at least one or two owners before Bechara. So, Bechara is doing all the right things. Nothing more he can do. Still, I think the cover is a pretty cool one. -

I think it would be fraud (an actual crime) to sell this piece as original without disclosing the modification. Bechara will make disclosure and there is a history in the art markets of modifying/restoring art which is all generally fine as long as one discloses.
