  1. And the TRUE first appearance of the black Spidey costume! I got the # 32 splash, where Ditko excels at drawing underwater scenes, with some fish making it a true splash . . . thankfully Spider-men types are not good swimmers, otherwise he might have deflected from a good secret underwater base shot
  2. Wonderful splash . . . the #18 cover is my favorite, though this two-parter is probably third on my list, with The Master Planner trilogy first, followed by the Crime Master two-parter.
  3. Finished off the King this morning. Selling him to Killer Kits/Creature Features UK on Sunday.
  4. Work-in-progress on a new sculpture for Killer Kits/Creature Features UK . . . a 15" tall KING KONG from the original 1933 movie.
  5. Talos has now been cast by Killer Kits/Creature Features UK (a garage-kit outfit) and will be made available as a resin collectors' bust, standing at 16" tall. Here's the first copy off the production line . . .
  6. It's the 'Open a can of worms' thread . . . or, 'Honesty is not the best policy'
  7. As I'm from the UK, I like both the American and homegrown stuff: AMAZING SPIDER-MAN Master Planner trilogy (1966) by Steve Ditko: JEFF HAWKE 'Survival' (1960) by Sydney Jordan and Colin Andrew DEMON WITH A GLASS HAND (1986) by Marshall Rogers: THE STEEL CLAW, 'Max Kruger' (1965) by Jesus Blasco: DAN DARE, PILOT OF THE FUTURE 'Reign of the Robots' (1958) by Frank Hampson: KELLY'S EYE 'The Vampire of Raffino' (1965) by Francisco Solano Lopez: THE DALEKS (1960s) by Ron Turner:
  8. McSpidey (convoluted mess for the most part . . . I'm a fan of clarity in drawing) Ross Andru Gil Kane at Marvel (though I quite like his 1960s work for DC) Sal Buscema Rob Liefeld (difficult to take seriously after seeing his barrel-chested Captain America abomination) Generally, a lot of the Moderns (though there are exceptions)
  9. Maybe not quite a silhouette, but this example sprang to mind . . .
  10. I finished-off my 16" tall Talos from JASON & THE ARGONAUTS yesterday evening and this morning I sold the sculpture to Creature Features/Killer Kits UK. On top of materials used, a worthwhile profit was made. Not exactly big licks, but not bad for two weeks' worth of, what is for me, a hobby . . . with the likelihood of further sales in the future. It will also be very prestigious to see my work marketed and distributed to a wider audience. Happy with all that. I took some final photos this morning prior to delivery. Next time I'll be seeing this will be as a resin bust . . . which I'll paint-up once copies come off the production line.
  11. I'm a big Tupac fan but, as a piece of artwork, it's a bit of an eyesore.
  12. Currently working on a 16" tall sculpture of Talos from JASON & THE ARGONAUTS. Some work-in-progress photos (along with a couple of screen-captures for comparison):
  13. It's an interesting and unique item (though quite small) and would make a good display piece. The price tag doesn't exactly seem unreasonable to me in today's market. If it ends up with on a dealer's web-site, expect lots of hype to pump up the price further.
  14. Space Family Robinson/Lost in Space was the main Gold Key title I collected as a kid, though there are other titles like Magnus, Robot Fighter I collected. Although a lot of the George Wilson painted covers have survived (I luckily own my favorite Wilson LIS cover), there doesn't seem to be a lot of Dan Spiegle's interiors, for example . . . with the exception of #1, which I own some pages from, and a close friend in Los Angeles who owns the bulk of that 1st issue interiors.
  15. I seem to recall Russ Cochran having some pages for sale in the early 1980s. You say he was 'super fast'? I think that shows in the examples you highlight which look very rushed and lacking in finesse. Not something I'd personally want to collect but to each his own.
  16. I bought the goggles from a Chinese seller on eBay. They were actually about 25% bigger than I was hoping for (they were designed, I think, for a motorcycle helmet), so I removed the strap and leather edges, filled the holes and made a plaster cast - from which I made a copy in thick latex. I then trimmed the latex copy down to a snug fit. Don't have problems, have solutions!
  17. New project finished! My 20" tall re-do of Qarlo from the OUTER LIMITS episode, 'Soldier', written by the late great Harlan Ellison (and later plagiarized, in part, for the TERMINATOR movies). I sculpted this one in multiple parts, so it was pretty much put-together in kit form. I've still a few paint touch-ups to do on the visible face and neck, but to all intents and purposes otherwise finished. A screen-capture from the filmed episode is included for comparison +11 33
  18. I was probably content with my collection about 20 years ago, (I've now just passed the 40 year mark in collecting OA), and then started selling off a lot of art to help fund big lifestyle changes . . . the last big sell-off allowing me to retire 7 years early from working life - and I was VERY content with that one! I still retain a lot of OA important to me, but there are few comic-art items in today's market of spiraling prices that I will actively pursue. Nowadays I'm more into collecting Movie Poster OA (generally, more affordable), though I did manage to buy a Ditko ASM splash and some more Demon With a Glass Hand pages in recent times. 19. I forgot to list a price on one of my paintings . . . then some smart-azz triggers a purchase with me! Maybe I should honor the 'sale' on the understanding that in case of non-delivery I will offer a full refund.
  20. I lean more towards the raw edginess of Joy Division over the polished (more accessible to a mainstream audience) output of New Order . . . even though I liked both incarnations of the band. I stopped listening to/was turned off by New Order after they released a football song (World in Motion) featuring Liverpool football player John Barnes* performing some rap inserts . . . badly! * For the record, I'm from Liverpool and lived next to the LFC football ground for the first 18 years of my life.
  21. Thanks. While I do take work-in-progress pictures of my sculptures and production processes, a paint-job usually comes together fairly quickly over a period of a few hours. I mostly use an air-brush with acrylic paints and usually have everything nailed in one session . . . though I'll often do touch-ups or corrections the following day once I come back to it with a fresh eye. The hardest part, for me, in painting is coming up with the right color mixes (I often mix paints and don't solely rely on any particular shop-bought color). Sometimes colors don't look quite right, so I'll go back and re-do. Acrylic paint has good color adhesion but is actually quite thinly dispersed . . . so over-painting doesn't pose much of a problem for obscuring detail.
