  1. Any potential artist should have some portfolio of sequential work already, even if it's just submissions for the big companies. You're right, it takes a full day's work (plus some front end time on layout and composition), and though many will ask others to work for free, few will work at their jobs for free.
  2. Self publishing through Kickstarter is definitely the best way to go to get a comic book published without too much cash outlay of your own. Definitely hit up @Westy Steve for samples of his niece's work. You can also find aspiring pros, part time pros, and full time pros on sites like digitalwebbing and penciljack. As an artist myself, please do keep in mind it's a collaboration - if the artist thinks you can drop a panel or two, or rearrange a page, at least hear them out
  3. Not every piece of paper he owns has to be worth money. A photo of him when he was 12 probably isn't worth anything either (no offense), but doesn't mean he can't have it.
  4. Yeah, the only downside to selling here is the lack of movement. Here you're getting the players in the market, who want a deal. On ebay, you get everybody - the players, the fans, the readers, etc.. Wish it were easier here, so one could skip most of the fees and such.
  5. I can almost imagine a Monty Python bit at the part where they told you they can only put on the label that which is on the indicia.
  6. Agree, which oddly doesn't seem to effect their credibility at all.
  7. Agree completely, yet still believe what I said. Superman is only irreplaceable due to his stature, not his uncompelling storylines.
  8. ASM may outsell Morales, but that is not proof that Peter Parker is popular. It can be, but it can also be that as I said, fans are aging so they are sticking with the known. It can also be that Morales and his introduction was poorly done and poorly handled. Sales numbers do not illustrate that Parker is growing new readership, which is what the goal of any comic should be. Superman is immune IMO because he is the original superhero, too iconic, and too difficult to replace as the last surviving member of his species. Personally I would be fine if he were replaced too, I just don't think they can accomplish it. The Batman Beyond cartoon was the perfect story to replace Bruce Wayne as Batman and worked because the story was compelling. The story is the key. With good enough ones, they can change and better appeal to young new readers and potentially retain current fans. They certainly haven't put much effort into caring about the story though, they just swapped everybody out knee-jerk style.
  9. Because he's gone from a kid to an adult to married. How many 12 year olds want to read about marital problems? He's fought everyone in his and others' rogue's galleries a bazillion times. His continuity is a mess precisely because Peter Parker is a been there done that story. It's played out. Things come to an end, and it is patently obvious that he became boring to most people. There's a reason the fans are aging with the characters - they aren't attracting new fans. Your 5 year old more than likely knows PP is Spider-Man from the movies, unless they're one of the very few who actually read a Marvel title. That's why there needs to be change. We have what, 70 years of Steve Rogers stories? Who cares anymore? How much more is there to investigate and delve into with this guy? Let the poor man retire and relax. It may be that Morales is a gimmick, but that means it was poorly done. It doesn't necessitate meaning that turning the page on PP shouldn't be done. Parker should go away from continuity. Publish one shot or TPBs with him if you think there's enough market. He doesn't have to go away completely. Frankly, I think the only non-replaceable character in comics is Superman.
  10. They really do need to do that. Just give them epic sendoffs. Not that the originals all have to die, they can get hurt or retire. They do need new characters that appeal to kids today and reflect them. Continue to produce the originals in stories told in TPB form. Call them untold tales or something. That way it's not your father's Spider-Man, but kids and dad can still read what appeals to them.
  11. Sorry to hear about your aunt and uncle. Kind of looks like my parents' greater neighborhood (they were fine, on high ground)... is it in Richmond? GLWTS.

  13. Yep. Much like movies, the most important part to make one successful is the most ignored - the writing. If you want to sell comics, people have to want to read them. So, you have to make them worth reading. That doesn't happen with variant covers and it doesn't happen with wholesale, knee-jerk character change. If you want a more diverse character lineup, fine. Take a 12 issue story arc to kill off Frank Castle and introduce a new female Punisher. At the end of which Castle becomes Ghost Rider because that would be badass. Don't just do it in an issue, make it an epic story. That would sell at least 12 comics, not 3 as people drop off because they have no care or connection to any character anymore. Blows my mind that people who make these things can't figure out that selling 1,000 variant covers once is not as good as selling 1,000 comics that make you want to buy one next month.
  14. Possibly, but that's a solveable problem but for the expense. In any case, I fear a large part of FL's days are numbered.
  15. expense, and regulations. We have the same sort of thing here in Houston (although here, the type of soil also makes a difference). One of those things where common sense has no place in determining how things are going to be.
  16. I really don't think the increase in diversity is intended to solely target the reflection of the character. Lady Thor isn't aimed specifically at tall blonde women.
  17. Seems like most copper/moderns are going down except the major keys. And Copper/modern seems to be a major source of tv/movie hype
  18. What do you want him to do, grab a hand fan, go down to FL and try to reverse it's rotation?
