IMO, you should not submit reader copies for grading.

I agree with this sentiment, but I feel like it becomes costly buying a reader and a speculative copy.  Of course, you could avoid buying speculative copies and just pay a premium for slabbed books on the after market.  Perhaps this is the ideal/most cost efficient solution for someone in my position.

Still learning, but I guess what is the recommended procedure for a more casual collector such as myself?  (Note: when I said reader copy, I mean I read it once and then it goes into a bag/board.  And yes, I understand that even reading the book once could potentially lead to ruin and the difference between a 9.8 and a 9.6/9.4.  I think 95% of my books have been treated this way.  The other 5% are stories I really enjoy that I've re-read).

  2. I feel incredibly silly for asking this, but when I submitted some books to a facilitator, they noted some fingerprints on the books and how that could negatively impact the grade on the book.  Now, I'm still new to all of this so that came as a bit of a shock to me.  I figured as long as the fingerprints weren't egregious, they shouldn't cause an issue.  After all, the book is bound to change hands multiple times before being slabbed.  Possibly at distribution, then by my LCS roughly twice (once on the shelf or straight into my sub folder, and then again when handed to me at checkout), by me when I read it, and by the creators when they sign it (though, perhaps not this last one when you bag/board your books properly for CGC SS submissions).  Now, this is a rough estimate.  And of course, if you buy reader vs investment copies, then it reduces the number of times touched.  But I'm curious, is it worthwhile to handle my books with gloves to keep my prints off them?  All my copies are reader copies, but every now and then maybe a book becomes a key or has a cool cover that you just want slabbed to show off on your shelf.

I'm starting a speculation conversation but let's suck the fun out of it before it even gets to that point.

He's trying to tell you that it's difficult to predict whether it's worthy of being speculative in the hopes of making a few bucks on the book.  Captain America #25 was the death of Captain America and per eBay is currently selling for $5 raw.  Slabbed copies are going for about $40.  Essentially it's going for just about cover price.  Based on that, it's fair to assume that Thor #700 won't be worth more than the cover even if Jane Foster (or even if Odinson) dies.

Then again, you have books like Totally Awesome Hulk #22 taking the aftermarket by storm and selling for $50.  I think it's fair to say no one saw that happening.  Then again, it's also fair to say that price might come down in the future depending on how the character of Weapon H is handled over the next 10 years.  It's all hit or miss depending on what becomes popular and/or well regarded.

But SF is actually a pretty small, dense place, like 5-6 miles across

7x7, hence why the local magazine is called that.

  5. Guessing it'll be the "death" of Jane Foster and the return of Odinson as Thor.  Unfortunately, deaths don't seem to mean much to Marvel these days since characters inevitably come back.  Heck, I'm surprised Wolverine has stayed dead this long.  (and if it's any sort of comparison, Death of Wolverine #4 is selling on eBay for $7.  Less if you buy the full series).  So will it be key?  Depends on the definition of key, but if a character does die (and warrants CGC labelling the issue as such), then I guess it'll be key.  Doesn't necessarily mean it's something to buy 20 issues of and sell on eBay.  at least that's my guess.

You're right, I hate those oversized defects. Glad you pointed this out, I'm out on this issue.

    (in reference to ASM #25)

I'm late to the game on this one, but I'm looking to buy a set.  It sounds like a lot of copies had a defect of some sort as a result of it being an oversized book using the basic cover material (as opposed to the thicker paper).  If I submit the books to CGC, will the defects still count against me if it is something that was frequent throughout the print run?

If you don't know already the print runs were so bad (uneven gloss, kinks, books stuck together) on the Dark Nights Metal store Exclusives that DC went back to print on them. However, four retailers did not go to reprint - Aspen, Midtown, Books a Million, and one other. Aspen destroyed the heavily damaged books since they needed them for Fan Expo next week and couldn't wait for the reprint.  What was initially a 3000, 1500, 1000 print run is now a 1500, 1000, 750 print run. I have ten "clean" sets that were sent to me already but will be pre-screening more at the show because even the books that were not destroyed still have issues as were seen in the regular store level books. Because of this I do not know how CGC will handle the store exclusives that were not reprinted. If for some reason you buy a CGC 9.8 set and they do not come back 9.8 you will of course get your money back... This has never been an issue but this a rare case of a horrible print run. BTW all my SDCC books, even all the SS done and about 100 Jim Lee Private signing SS all came back 9.8 or higher (every single book, no 9.4 & 9.6 SS like you are seeing elsewhere) and are almost all ready for pickup so if you are waiting for SDCC books I will be picking them up and shipping them out shortly. I'm a really strict grader (too strict in most cases) so I'm up in the air on these ones.

Dark Nights Metal 1 Aspen Turner Exclusives Set (Wonder Woman LTD 1500 Virgin, Batman LTD 1000, Superman LTD 750 Virgin)

$150 raw NM/NM+ or better (5 sets available)

$320 CGC 9.8 Fast Tracked (3 sets available)

But how do I do that do I just mail the book to cgc? Then tell them what I want it's just very vague to me

Check the SigSeries Event Central board I linked.  In there you'll find people (facilitators) who attend cons.  Generally you mail them (the facilitator) your books in advance along with the creators you would like to have sign your books.  The facilitator then takes your book to the convention and gets the books signed for you and then submits it to CGC for grading.  CGC then mails you the book back after they complete the grading/slabbing process.  Make sure you submit to a reputable facilitator.  And research in advance the costs.  You'll generally pay a facilitator fee, a grading fee, shipping, and creator fees.

how do you get them to do that? i thought you had to with them during the signing?

I just meant that I could pay a facilitator to collect the sigs and submit the books for me so that I, personally, wouldn't have to attend the cons.  If your question was in reference to finding facilitators, the "SigSeries Event Central" board(https://www.cgccomics.com/boards/forum/69-sigseries-event-central/) has all the information regarding upcoming signings, events and facilitators who are accepting submissions.

  10. I got my very first submissions back today.  They're not as pretty as 9.8s, and i'm sure many are asking "why bother?" with that 8.0, but you live and learn.  I had just come across this forum about two weeks before SDCC and prior to that had no idea that facilitators could collect sigs for you w/o having to attend cons.  So I rushed these off because I didn't know how often all 4 creators would be at the same event.  Still happy about how the books turned out, especially since this run by Loeb/Lee is what got me back into comics.  Really pleased on the signature placement of the Batman #612.

You'd really have to drop 4 figures, check her commission prices for a they are easily that plus if you had both Harleys on the cover.

I know.  They've doubled in the last year.  And quadrupled in the last 2.  :(  I just ended up buying prints and framing them.  Not the same, but at least I get to admire the beauty of her art.

I really love just about anything Sanders does, but I am on the fence with this one.

I loved her Edge of Venomverse 1 because of the detail involved with it. This one is more cheesecake that all the artist's do, it doesn't have
her normal flair that sets here apart I think.

That and I am just about done with any type of special variant. They have lost their uniqueness for me. Everyone is doing them.

I agree.  I love Natali's work, but the Harley cover is just an extension of the original sketch/print she did below.  Whoever commissioned that original book is a VERY lucky person.  If it ever came to market, I would drop 4 figures to get it.  As for the 25th Anniversary book, I'm on the fence as well, but I guess I better make a decision in case they sell out.

It's ink rub off from the issue that was on top when the books were in the Diamond box. It's very common for this issue and isn't treated as a production defect by CGC (eg. it does affect the grade just like any other defect).

Well that's disappointing (i sent the book out for signing/grading yesterday).  Something that occurs as a result of the printing/distribution process really feels like it should have no impact on grading to me since it is out of the buyers control.  The rest of the book looked nearly immaculate to me.  Oh well, personal collection.  Thanks.

I'm not sure anybody can definitely tell you what CGC will do with this, hence I suspect, the lack of response. I am assuming, since you want to get it signed,  this is a keeper. If so, I think the ink smears will probably bother you long term.  I know it would bother me.

Ah, I guess I thought the "Ask CGC" sub-forum would elicit official responses from a CGC representative.

Is it really a printing error ? I would think it was a stacking error, ink from another book rubbed off. I don't think it's a common problem for this issue, at least I don't remember seeing it.

The issue is only persistent across the top right section of the book.  The top left (pictured below) doesn't appear to have a similar issue.  I bought the book on eBay so I can't speak for how the previous owner(s) handled it (ie if it is indeed a stacking issue).  Looking to get the book signed/graded soon and was just trying to figure out if it would drop the grade and if I should just save my money.
