  1. I grew up primarily reading Marvel so I have a pretty good idea which books are key issues (ASM 300, 361, NM 87, 98, etc).  But I'm less familiar with what DC books from these eras are considered keys.  I see people talk about how hard it is to get BA12, and in my mind Batman 608 is another.  But beyond that, I have no idea.  So dear Collectors, what do you consider to be key DC issues of the Copper/Modern era?

  2. I've seen some sellers explicitly state that sales tax will be included for XX (insert state abbreviation here) buyers.  I bought a book from an in state seller and did not have to pay sales tax so I guess it just depends on the seller.  I'm sure some sellers opt to just eat the cost on smaller books because i'm sure buyers don't read all the fine print and they'd rather not get neutral/negative feedback because some buyer is upset they didn't see the tax part mentioned.

I'm confused by how grading works.  How does a book with the date stamped on it receive a 9.6?  I've seen other SA books with stamps/markings on them that seemingly have no impact on the grade as well.  I would have assumed any sort of marking would bring down the grade, or that you would need a qualified label that says "stamp on cover" or some such.

Well, lousy comic store is a bit subjective since they've been around for over 30 years.  I think they must be doing something right.   They decided to get rid of their back issue stock at least 10 years ago because the amount of space it took up was not what the customers wanted, which meant they were not getting the money for the space.      To each their own...

My LCS kinda went this route as well.  I remember when I was a kid they had a lot of back issues.  Back then, one wall was current issues, then the opposite wall and middle of the floor were back issues.  A small section was used for TPB's and the front register had baseball cards, etc.  Nowadays, it's mostly trades and toys with a small section for back issues.  I've learned that they just post a lot of the good back issues on eBay.

  5. Before you guys jump the gun, I know that the best (only?) way you can slab a limited numbered autographed Dynamic Forces variant with COA is a green (Qualified) label.  I also know that CGC will not include the COA in the slab and will either throw it away or will send it back to you.  Now, I'm not particular about the label (I've made my peace that it will never be a yellow label), but I wish CGC would at least include the COA in the slab because it at least adds a level of authenticity none-the-less to a more casual observer or perhaps even eBayer.  I thought it was just CGC's policy to not include COA's, but then I came across the item below which has the "Savannah Pedigree" COA included in the case.  I'm new around these parts, but is there any reason why CGC is okay including one particular COA, but not another?

(PS: if this question is inappropriate for this thread, please let me know and i'll delete/move it elsewhere.  Thanks.)

  6. I guess now's as good a time as any to introduce myself.  My name's Eric and I've been collecting Marvel/DC since the late 80's/early 90's.  I'm really in it for the art and stories, and not so much the collecting.  But through the years I have picked up a handful of issues that are  worthy of being slabbed to me, even if they're not necessarily actively sought after by collectors.  (hence how I found this forum).  Of course, I've learned a lot in the last few weeks of lurking and now you've piqued my interest in books I never thought I might want.  Needless to say, an "affordably priced" ASM 300 CGC SS by Stan, Todd, and David has been and will always be my Holy Grail.

    Can someone help me?

Ive been searching different websites trying to find a way to send my comics in to get signed if I won't be attending an event, if this is possible where and what website can I go to, to find it?

Check out the SigSeries Event Central forums.  You'll find some facilitators along with a list of upcoming cons they will be attending.

There have always been niche collectors. It's just easier to see them now.

Don't think that just because a handful of people are looking for some oddity that it has any real value or that you should also collect it. The end result of such thinking is most likely losing money or dissatisfaction with your collection. Collect what you like, not what other people like.

Yeah, I'll definitely still prioritize "buying to read" over "speculating".  The extent of my collecting would be issues that I know are notable for their stories/first appearances and thus have value to a wider range of people (ie ASM 300, Batman 608, etc).  (Though, if i know it's notable, then it's a guarantee that you seasoned collectors will know long before I do making it worthless for a n00b such as myself to try to buy up a handful of issues :P).  Still fun to see what you all are after.

  9. Man, just came across this thread today and it has been VERY informative.  I remember when these books were selling for $5 and shops would just have stacks of #362/#363.  I never would have imagined #361 would be selling for so much.  I might have to get my copy slabbed.  Not that I would ever consider selling mine, but any idea how much CGC SS copies have sold for?  I see this ebay auction (http://www.ebay.com/itm/AMAZING-SPIDER-MAN-361-CGC-9-8-3X-SS-STAN-LEE-MARK-BAGLEY-MICHELINIE-1ST-CARNAGE-/172755414191?hash=item2839066caf:g:1WQAAOSw3h1ZVYTn) , but until it actually sells, that price doesn't mean much.

    O

So far from my experience there are a very very small potion of the print run for the X-Men holograms have a either slight or total blue hue rather then the green or bronze hologram. My copy above is about a 85-90% or so blue hologram. I had an X-force copy last year that was complete 100% blue. Other then that I have only found 2 of them in several years of looking. Its just a fun challenge. It just an odd variant of the holograms you just only see once in awhile and collectors are chasing getting an entire set.

Thanks.  Interesting how the nuances of what is sought after has changed and developed through the years.  I'll have to keep an eye out for the blue hued holograms now.  :)

Interesting find today. Not in perfect shape, but considering the rarity all take it.

New to all of this so totally unfamiliar with what makes a book rare.  Is there something special about the Wolverine issue that makes it stand out?  (ie Newstand edition or some such).  I have all the hologram covers from the Fatal Attractions story and just figured they weren't worth more than the cover price these days, but would love to know if i'm mistaken.

Is Stan Lee still going to SDCC and able to sign books with his recent spouses death?

I do not want to bring books to SD if there is no chance for him to sign anything.

    Thanks.

Saw him at D23 on Friday.  Based on that, I would guess he'll be at SDCC.
