  1. Well, since I basically just found out about comic grading about 6 months ago, I basically went ham and bought the books I always wanted as a kid.  As a child of the 90's, Venom was all the rage so it's no big surprise that one of my holy grails was ASM #300.  Well, fast forward almost 30 years and I'm now an adult with a little expendable income.  This was one of the first big books I bought and I've only dug further down the rabbit hole from here.

The Silver Surfer was my favorite character growing up, so this key was a no brainer.

After getting scammed out of a book on eBay, I found myself in the unfortunate position of getting stuck with hundreds of dollars in eBay gift cards.  Not knowing what to spend it on, I decided to make it worth my while and got another holy grail, Fantastic Four #48 (again, because of my love for the Surfer).

2017 was a much more expensive year than I had anticipated, but I feel a little bit of completion knowing that I own some of these books that I could only dream of as a child.  There aren't too many major keys left on my want list (FF 49/50, SS 4 to complete the Silver Surfer essentials) so I may turn my focus to minor keys in a raw format (Thanos Quest, and ASM 252 to finish my Venom keys) for 2018.

Received some phone calls about this one over the weekend---while this next one is probably going to be under a lot of people's radar, a number of retailers are ordering tight and yet I'm told by a few people, it's one of several reasons that this book is going to have some heat.

Tom King, Len Wein, Kelly Jones & Jason Fabok.   I'm  a big Swamp Thing fan, and I can't help but encourage all ST fans to get this.  Could be one of Len's last body of work, too.  All my orders have to be in by tomorrow night, so after tomorrow, I truly will not be able to guarantee spots.

SWAMP THING WINTER SPECIAL #1 s/s Tom King (writer) and cover artist Jason Fabok - $95

    blue universal 9.8 - $75

This was co-written with Len Wein, creator of Swamp Thing----interior art by Kelly Jones.  FYI, if you're taking this later in the year to get signed at conventions, be aware that Jason Fabok is charging up to $30 to sign books for CGC, King is $15 and the cover price of this book is $8 (square bound prestige format) .

Tom King and Jason Fabok pay tribute to the legendary creators of Swamp Thing, writer Len Wein and artist Bernie Wrightson, as they join forces for an earth-shattering Swamp Thing passion project!
In this new, squarebound one-shot, Swamp Thing is out of his element as he shepherds a lost boy through a blinding blizzard and other hazards of a strange, frozen tundra. In this touching and harrowing tale of survival, the pair must navigate countless threats throughout a bewildering terrain-with a bloodthirsty snow monster hot on their heels. But how long can they rely on each other? Separated from the Green and stripped of his powers in this dead world, Swamp Thing struggles to fight for their lives and deliver the boy to safety. Disoriented and decaying, Swamp Thing's fading understanding of his surroundings forces the duo to confront their desperation and uncover the true identity of the snow monster that hunts them.
In addition, this special features the final Swamp Thing story from the monster's co-creator, Len Wein. Originally intended as the start of a new series, it is presented here both in its original ---script form and with art by Kelley Jones.

Here's also a Bleeding Cool ling on the book, featuring some interior pages

    why is it encapsulated?

At the very least make the wording "counterfeit copy" in HUGE letters on the front.

    Good god PGX

Agreed.  Instead of "Incredible Hulk #181" at the top, it should just be graded as "Counterfeit Copy 6.0".  Then in the summary it should say something like "re-tells story of Incredible Hulk 181"

Congrats! Almost every book has its issues...conversely, you did well with page quality!

I found it interesting that the vertical cut is also scrutinized with this book. The folks in the know say to pay attention to Sue’s foot. Apparently with a perfectly vertically centered book her foot is fully visible.

Yes, the White page coloring definitely influenced my decision in the purchasing process.  And for whatever reason, I never thought to use Sue's foot as a metric for the bottom of the cover, I always looked at the Watchers which I realize now is a far more imprecise marker.

  5. I bought a copy of FF48 off eBay and was a little bummed to find that the case had been damaged in transit.  I'm guessing the condition of the book is otherwise unchanged, but I'm wondering what is the recommended course of action here?  I plan to keep the book and have it reholdered, but is there an expectation that the seller is on the hook for the reholdering fees? (messaged the seller who offered to issue a refund to cover shipping/reholdering.  (thumbsu)

When submitting to CGC for reholdering, they don't regrade the book right?  They just put it in a fresh slab and print out the same label with the same grade?  I just don't want to have to worry that the grader is having a bad day and downgrades it.

    Any advice is appreciated.  Thanks.

I was wondering if there is any con or private signing Stan Lee will be doing either the rest of 2017 or 2018 that we can send comics to to have signed and CGC'd and have sent back to Canada?  Thanks everyone.

Excelsior Collectibles are his official handlers.  You can send books to them and they have private signings every so often.

I saw these yesterday and I love covers C & D (Classic X-Men & Marvel Girl), so I will be targeting those for sure.  I'm not a fan of Cover H, that dark phoenix face looks horrible...

What are everyone else's thoughts on the covers?

    JSC Phoenix.jpg

Part of me wants to get all 8 assuming the sigs will match the color on the cover.  I just wish there was a CGC option.  Like if i could just list the CGC office as the delivery recipient, that'd be great.

As far as faves, I think I like Cover A (OG Marvel Girl), D (X-Factor Marvel Girl), and E (Gold Team Jean Grey).

  8. I mean, surely 8 covers is excessive right?  Don't get me wrong, I appreciate that the covers are at least different as opposed to the previous covers which used the same basic character stances with a few changes to clothing.  And I also love that the backs are virgin covers.  Okay, and it's cool if the sigs are in the corresponding colors.  Aww who am I kidding, I kinda want all 8.

  9. Tier (also list FastTrack where applicable): Modern
    Number of books: 2
    Received: 10/16
    Verified: 11/3
    Graded: TBD
    Shipped/Safe: TBD
    Received (by owner): TBD

I clearly got screwed.  Seeing other peoples modern (non-FT) books move from Received to Verified in 2 days while mine took 2.5 weeks.  :(

It should say Verified within a day or two of receipt. This means they received it and the invoice matches the contents of the delivery.

It goes from Received to Verified quickly if you submit FastTrack.  I've had a Modern submission (not FastTrack) sitting in received since 10/16.  :(

To answer @Inkhead, you can track your submission through the process, but you won't see information such as grading on your books until it passes Grading/Quality Control.

I don't see anything as far as resto, but with 45 watchers, they might be sniping or people are putting high max bids and that is why there is 10 bids and already at $710.

Weird, the number of people watching doesn't show up for me.  Thanks for the extra set of eyes on this.

  12. At worst, I might get the attention of another bidder (if it's legit).  At best, I'll save myself the potential headache (if it's a fraud/resto).

I'm not good at spotting resto, but I'm wondering what you guys think of this book?  The seller's name didn't pop up in the eBay thread, but the fact that it's a big book at a currently low price makes me leery.  The fact that it only has 10 bids, of which 4 are from the same user makes me curious if someone is shill bidding just to get the price up.  I sent a message asking if the book was restored and was told by the seller that it wasn't, but it's always best to be cautious.  So what say the community?  From the few spotty images, is there anything that jumps out as resto or would this be worth bidding on?

  13. Excelsior Collectibles are his official partners/handlers.  When I spoke with them they mentioned they have monthly (i think?) private signings that they do with him.

Otherwise, any of the facilitators in the Signature Room will be able to get his sig if they are at a particular event that he also happens to be at.  The question is what does his schedule look like for the remainder of the year.
