Well, I think that was the discussion when the run ended... that people didn't expect the value of #1 to hold up given the fact the series was over.    Surprisingly, not only did it hold up but it gained strength.     I think for at least the mid term it will be more than fine.    Eventually it may fade but that's true of a lot of things.

I think scarcity is driving a lot of the price appreciation as there just aren't that many copies available. Cerebus may never anchor a blockbuster movie franchise, but there are still more nostalgic fans and/or investors than issues to go around.

I very much highly doubt that there would be 25 copies of this book in NM or better (i.e. CGC 9.4), especially considering that after more than 2 full decades of certification, only a meagre 6 copies of this book have been slabbed in this NM grade or higher.

When referring to NM, I meant the lowest scale of VF/NM (CGC 9.0) as there seems to be about 20 graded copies in that condition or higher and possibly a handful of other ungraded ones out there.

I don't know if anyone has accounted for any high grade copies Deni Loubert may still have, if any.

Late to the party, but are we forgetting Star Wars #1 35-cent price variant?   Using the highest grade available common to all these issues, a SW#1 35-cent in 9.4 was $40800 in September. By comparison, in 9.4:   MS5 = $19.2K in Spetember; IH181 = $18K in September; GSX1 = $12K in  October; HOS92 = no recent sales, but presumably something in that ballpark.  IH180 in 9.4 = $5040 in October, so quite behind those still.

This suggests Star Wars #1 35-cent price variant remains the King of the BA, as ranked by Overstreet Price Guide in recent years.  Where the others (MS5, IH181, GSX1, and HOS92) rank from 2-5 might also depend on the valuation of Iron Fist #14 35-cent price variant, for which a 9.4 sold for $8200 way back in 2017, and Cerebus #1, which has only two in 9.4 and none higher and sold for $12K in 9.4 in 2019. Scooby Doo #1 only has two 9.4s, the highest graded, so that might be top 7 still.  And Green Lantern #76 = $6900 in June, so could be higher than IH180, too, at least for now.

So IH180 might not crack top 10 in the BA.  Still respectable and possibly climbing the ranks.

The last Cerebus #1 CGC 9.4 sold for $29,130.

  4. Many people don't understand why copies of Cerebus #1 are skyrocketing in price. Setting aside the demand for the book itself, Sim's legacy, and it's place in the history of independent comics, it checks two very important boxes in collectibles.  1) Absolute Rarity (there are only 2,000 copies and some of those are presumed not to exist anymore). 2) Condition Rarity (most copies are badly damaged and looking at the CGC census, it's easy to see that possibly 25 copies exist at the CGC 9.0 grade or higher).
