Anyone who believes the issue is about getting exact numbers is mistaken. That's never been the issue. The issue is in the repetition of the claim that Diamond and Comichron reports print runs.

Sometimes the numbers reported by Diamond ARE good estimates.

    Sometimes they are wildly off.

The problem? We don't know which is which. We don't have the information necessary, because the publishers do not reveal this information. It's not an issue of "you're wrong and I'm right", and never has been. It's an issue of "none of us KNOWS, and anyone claiming otherwise has a responsibility to prove it."

There is nothing wrong with estimates. Estimates are perfectly fine, provided they acknowledge where they come from and how they were arrived at.

Why does this matter? Because people make financial decisions based on this information, and we owe it to everyone to not repeat misinformation that could lead to people making financial decisions that could hurt them.

PS. Personal commentary about other people is not appropriate. It's completely possible to disagree...even vehemently...without making assumptions, assertions, claims, psychological analyses about others. It would be great if people put some of their writing skills and energy into remembering that, rather than making erroneous assumptions about what others do and have done. Hoping we can be done with this...

Both sold this year at ComicLink - blended average of the 2 was around $55k. Which one would you choose, and why? ( if YOU had to buy one, with YOUR real money ) . The way this thread works, now you guys ad different, like priced scenarios- I don’t have time to do this all day - but it sure would be fun!!! :acclaim:

I’ve done a bunch of selling on FB Marketplace. Be prepared to deal with a ton of fake offers, people wasting your time, and rude people as well.

When going to make a sale watch for “replica bills” (they say replica somewhere on the bill, last place I saw one it was the bottom right corner in small letters), counterfeit bills, and I personally don’t take checks.

Then the next problem is, if someone hands you a counterfeit bill or replica bill, it always turns into a confrontation. It can take a nasty turn very quickly. I’m not telling you to avoid this means because of the money you can save on eBay fees, but be careful.

I always conceal carry when I meet with anyone, and have my lady or a buddy with me carrying too. I’ve never had to use it, or pull it on anyone from a bad deal, but there have been people wanting to fight, call me a liar when I can’t except their counterfeits, and things like that.

From the sale of magazines and comics if you are shipping, I’d try and stick with PayPal. I’ve heard a lot of horror stories though of guys sending a raw book let’s say that was a 9.8, and they say it wasn’t as described, and send a 6.0 back. I try and video the packaging and shipping of the slab, or raw, but i don’t even know if it will help, at least it’s some sort of proof though.

I apologize for not reading through the entire thread to see if you would even meet up with anyone or just ship, but just be aware if that ever crosses your mind.

Its definitely a great place to get a bunch of peoples attention, but there are a lot of issues that can come from it too.

On a side note, I’ve also noticed people using Instagram lately to sell comics, slabs, and magazines.

I should note, most of these issues occurred from before I even started collecting comics. And some from the good old craigslist. There are two instances in the past year though that have occurred from the sale of comics while using FB Marketplace. But if two out of 20 are bad, that’s still pretty good odds.

Dang man, your stories sound like a drug deals gone wrong...….

I'm bullish on the long-term prospects of Shang-Chi and SME 15.  Assuming the opening movie is good and Marvel Studios makes another $1 billion or so with it (likely) -- in other words, assuming the character is embraced by audiences here and abroad -- Shang will be in the pop culture consciousness for the decade of the 2020s.  Kevin Feige is clearly teeing the character up to open the door for Iron Fist, Luke Cage, and then eventually Daredevil, Punisher and the other Marvel "street-level" fighters on the big screen.  And they will intersect with Blade and the Marvel 'monster-verse,' including Man-Thing.  Shang-Chi, with Dr. Strange, will anchor these new "Avengers" or "Defenders" (don't be surprised if we get a Defenders movie).  Thus, SME 15 is going to be a solid book for the next decade, most certainly in VF+ and higher.  And Shang-Chi will usher in a new embrace over all things martial arts, much like what we had in the early- to mid-70s with Bruce Lee and to a lesser degree in the mid-80s with Karate Kid.  Except that Marvel will find away to make martial arts ever cooler, and all the local Dojos around the country will be over-registered with kids wanting to learn Karate.  Remember how bad- this guy was 40+ years ago?  It's coming full circle in the 2020s, brothers.

If someone 7 years ago would have told me TTA 13 would become a key, I would have laughed.  Very few pre-2013 reported GPA activity for TTA 13 because nobody wanted to slab them; they were essentially illiquid.  (A CGC 4.0 sold in 2009 for $43.)  Or Iron Man 55?  In 2011 (and for years before it), a 9.2 was a flat $300 book; today it's a $1,500 book.  And Groot and Thanos are just supporting characters in the MCU.

Man this post is intriguing to say the least...….awesome write up!

Well, it depends on how successful the movie is in generating new sustainable collector interest.  Iron man was a 3rd tier character with little collector interest before the movies made him a 1st tier character, IMO.  He translates well to the big screen and RDJ made him more interesting than the comics ever did.  That translated into sustainable long term collector interest.  Take it from someone who sold an Iron Man 1 into the first initial movie interest.  🙂

Likewise, FF 52 went from a very minor key to a pretty major one based on what appears to be real, long term, sustained demand created from the interest in the movies ( although it is still a little early to be 100% sure on that ).

People buying SME 15 right now for the long term are betting that the movie will generate similar sustained increased demand in the character.  I have bet against that by putting my copy up for sale, but only time will tell who is right.  Who would have thought that people would still be paying real money for Guardians of the Galaxy books years after the movie?  Certainly not me. 🙂

I always thought that about Iron Man....before the movies he was a 2nd or 3rd tier character. Now he's definitely one of Marvel's big 5 characters.

I have found if you buy comics out of love with a manageable budget (with no buying on credit) and only look at these “speculative talk shows” as simply entertainment or a casual reinforcer of your innate-intuitive feelings on keys etc than you cannot really go wrong in this hobby.    If, however, you are into this hobby purely to make money and need someone else to point a finger as to where to buy/invest than you are possibly always going to be behind the 8-ball, chasing your own tail and finding yourself vexed more often then not.  There is a lot of market manipulation (or so I believe) and there are no ‘secrets’ unless you buy into them.  Be wary and have fun......  my 2 cents.  :flamed:

    Well said brother.....totally agree.

Where exactly are you pulling this number from for every 1 negative there are 5-10 that just decided it wasn’t worth it? These “articles” you provided aren’t really specific to high-dollar comic books, or even comic books at all or even eBay for that matter.

If you look at this seller’s recent sales these are books like Hulk 181and GS X-Men 1 These aren’t items that aren’t “worth the time” to complain for most people if you are ripping them off. This is why making blanket statements isn’t a good idea. If you told me a seller who only sells dollar bin books on eBay had a lot of people who didn’t feel it was worth their time to reply I’d tend to agree a bit more. It’s often not worth my time to leave a negative on a book I paid a dollar for, or file for a return, or leave a positive review for that matter. But if you paid 1500 for a Hulk 181 like this seller recently sold and it had resto which was the claim for this seller - that he sold books as unrestored books that actually had restoration, well you can bet most people would in fact complain.

Totally agree with you on that one......sometimes it's just not worth it.....even though it only takes a simple click of your mouse.

Because people don't complain. For a variety of reasons, people just choose not to complain about all sorts of things. It's not worth their time, they don't want to burn a bridge, they don't want to be thought of as a complainer, they don't want people complaining about them (that's the big one.)

Something usually has to be realllly wrong for most people to complain. If I had a dollar for every time I've heard "you're the first/only person to complain!", I'd be rich....and yet, I have no doubt that's absolutely true.

You're exactly right...….I myself fall firmly into that category.

I don't think it's Dupcak. Here's an old thread with info.

Just read a few of the replies......I'm totally in agreement with the replies that I read. This guy or these people seem to buy low to mid grade and restored slabbed books...…….. remove them from the slab and sell them as higher grades. But, what I notice with them is that they never provide an exact grade.....only using words like *High Grade* or *Excellent* so that way they can't be held accountable for a particular grade...….these people are real crooks...smh

I bought a FF 48 from all_things_comics on a whim as the auction was closing. Now that I have had time to google his name apparently he is a popular scam artist that has sold under many different names. It looks like he sales restored comics as non restored..GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR

Sorry just thought I would vent.

I’ve purchased from this guys a few times and have yet to find his grading accurate, but he has 100% positive feedback....I don’t understand why people continue to give him positive reviews. The books that I’ve purchased were pressed and way over graded.....and I know that I can’t be the only person he’s screwed over.
