  1. I took a look and was going to bid on the Buck Rogers book and a few others. With under 3 seconds Buck blasted into space from $30. I just laughed as it closed at $183.29. I couldn't even finish making my, much lower than selling price, bid.
  2. Adjust my 2022 goals to just organization; what to sell/trade now, keep for now, keep forever. Stick to a list of what I am looking for, while allowing a little stray spending. Learn more about the market for certain books on my list. Trade for a book on the PC list. Buy from the boards. Break my spending record for a single book ($110).
  3. I almost have my books divided into: get rid of sooner, get rid of later, keep forever. That time thing is elusive.
  4. I have never slabbed a comic but have thought about it, especially with books that aren't going to be in the PC. How would you react if something went wrong? Is it a book you can easily replace if something goes wrong? Would you like to hear excuses, and argue for fair compensation (for me that would be FMV of the book plus a little extra for the trouble of having to find a suitable replacement) from the people you intrust with your books if something bad should happen?
  5. I didn't do much buying, more learning and looking. Made a list of what I'd like for the PC and am going to try to stick to it. Got the TGK and King for me, got the Web as a gift for a friend (the double cover was a surprise and a nice bonus), saw the Blue Bolt at an estate sale. Right when I saw the second cover, I knew I was looking at someone else's book.
  6. I had a little time and it wasn't too far so I figured I'd pop by the sale and at least take a look at the books. They were all a little nicer than I'd expected, but then the Blue Bolt really delivered. There's no way my bid even came close.
  7. This was the first book I picked up after making a list of the books I want in my collection. It started at $160 (on MCS) and I didn't feel comfortable. I've never spent that much on one book before. It got down to $110 and I didn't want to wait any longer and decided I'd rather have the book and be a little uneasy about the cost than watch it go. I was likely never going to find THIS book again. It stays forever for a number of reasons now. (The whites are not quite that white. My phone makes it look a bit brighter than it actually is.)
  8. Realistically, I need to get better at grading, get comfortable selling, and get a LOT more familiar with GA books before I try something like this. I was hoping to close my eyes and throw a bullseye with this one. Some of the books I'm having a little trouble with are Action 116, Detective 119, Blue Bolt Vol. 7 #8, Real Fact Comics #6. Again though, I should really pump my brakes and do some more homework before I jump into the GA.
  9. Some of the books in the sale have been separated and are going up for bids; high bid takes it, no knowledge of other bids. That's not a game I'm too interested in playing. It makes me think that the books weren't really part of the "estate" and are just getting tacked on. The books that caught my eye, but weren't ones that I have been looking for were Blue Bolt 112, Planet 66, and Out of This World 1; amazing books!. There was a Journey Into Fear 1 and Strange Adventures 8 that I wouldn't have minded adding to my collection as well. There were a few others as well, but those were the ones that I thought were the best of the bunch. At the very least, I got a little work looking up book values and I got to see some books that were off my radar. I'm also going to save a lot of time and hassle by skipping the estate sale. Here's a link if anyone is interested: https://www.estatesales.net/WI/Elm-Grove/53122/3507936 I hope this can help someone find something they have been searching for!
  10. I love art and history, two things that comics provide in ample amounts. It's going to be tough to stick to my plan now that I'm seeing books that I've never seen before. Some of the artwork from the GA that I've seen so far is unmatched. I bought off the rack in the early 90's and I am sure that is why older comics are more appealing to me.
  11. Honestly, I'm hoping to be there when they're sold. It's not likely, but I think meeting the person who buys those and asking a couple questions would be more beneficial than buying one of the books right now.
  12. I am in the process of turning the collection I have into the collection I'd like to have. I made a list that will (likely not) keep me from any miscellaneous purchases. While looking for some of the books on my list I found a bunch of books that, while not on the list, would look great in my collection (or anyone else's for that matter). Unfortunately, until I get more familiar with GA, they're not just in the deep end of the pool, they're down with the Titanic. I don't have the time to wait for the doors open so I am under no impression that I'll even see the books. If I can see these books in person, I'll consider it a huge win. If, by chance, I do get there before anyone else picks these up, I am going to make an offer I am comfortable with. I will also take some pics because I have read that comic book threads are worthless without pics. I am trying to learn more about GA books (and how to track them down) as the most difficult books on my list are from this era (difficult to find sales history, impossible to find for sale, at least for me). The books I'm interested in this sale don't have a lot of sales history. I only looked on Heritage though. I don't subscribe to GPA or any other price tracking service. Are recent auction results going to be my best bet to find values on GA books without the subscription services? Could you offer any other tips on GA collecting in general?
  13. I have learned that I am not able to give books a quick look and accurate grade. Kudos to those of you who can!
  14. I think the biggest hang-up, if I were to take this on, would be the time spent grading. I am slowly getting better and would be very uncomfortable trying to get an accurate grade in under a couple minutes. I need to take a long look, compare books that are close in grade, and read grading guidelines before I'm even ready to write down a number to second guess for ten minutes before settling on a final grade. I'm trying the quick-look method in the current grading contest and sinking like a stone.
  15. I made it about ten minutes and came to a very similar conclusion.
  16. I don't have the hour and a half. Does he mention who is allowed to purchase grades and the price per book for that?
  17. I figured the best time to explain the pee stain on your shorts is when the person next to you pooped down their leg.
  18. ...so about the grading of these...or did I miss that part?
  19. I'd like some clarification on the two statements that CGC released. How can there be precedent for grading the book yet it was an unprecedented book to grade? That backpedal makes it seem that there is a lot more. A little transparency would be nice here. I'm also curious about the grade distribution and how these books, handled to attach another cover a year after print, with two new staples got such high marks. Did BF send just those thirty books in? Did they send in all 750 copies of each book for 9.8, 9.9, and 10 prescreen? 30 books achieving those high grades seems fishy, 2,250 books jumping the line seems like a kick in the richard to all those folks who paid for grading services.
  20. ...but how many of you guys have 9.9s with two extra staples and a cover that was attached a year after printing?
  21. Sorry to continue the hijack but add a chocolate chip cookie to that burger. GF (at the time) worked at a burger spot. She thought it would be funny to sneak a cookie onto my PB burger, it was funny delicious! Home Depot is 0-2 on delivering a patio table to us. It's a two person lift but both deliveries have been one person pulling half the box out then pushing down (snapping the tabletop) to stand the box up and lean it against the garage. They have offered a 50% refund for us to keep and repair the tables or to continue delivering (and breaking) the table while picking up the broken one at a different time. They picked up the first broken one yesterday and sent two people. At least the broken table got handled correctly. Douglas, I hope your books make it back to you in the condition you expected them! Good luck!
