  1. Thank you all for your input. Now I am wondering how the book will survive a journey to CGC. And once there, how will it be handled? I've seen a couple videos from CGC examining expensive books... I know that's always a risk vs the reward of having it slabbed. But this copy is in a fragile state. It would not take much to detach the cover completely. I don't know if that would affect the grade. But I think it would make the book less desirable to a potential buyer. Does anyone have advice about sending a book in fragile condition to CGC? Or is it proper to post that question elsewhere?
  2. Thank you all for your grading thoughts here.
  3. Hello, I have always wondered exactly where the grade would fall on my well-loved ASM #1. The book looks complete. The cover is still attached although it is not readily obvious how. May be too many pictures but there are so many areas of concern.... Thank you for your help.
  4. Thanks for your expertise. Your info was very helpful.
  5. Hello and thank you for helping with this grade. There's a 2" tear thru the front cover logo. Not sure how this affects the grade?
  6. Hello and thank you for your help grading my Hopalong Cassidy #1 please. The centerfold plus 2 more layers of paging is loose form the center staple. Total 3 layers of paging loose from centerfold. Interesting these loose pages because they are being held together and the bottom edges of a couple are shorter like maybe they have been cut? I was also told that they did some strange things when making books that long ago so I don't know if this is natural or if it has been worked on somewhere down the line? And it looks like a piece of tape was removed or fell off at the bottom spine corner. I tried to get better/ natural lighting from a window for these pictures.
  7. The Legion story is complete. Better to have the interior story page piece out of the non-significant back up story....? Although this does not change the grade, maybe a buyer would see more value in this book compared to other .5's...?
  8. Hello and thank you for your help grading this book. There is a big piece out of an interior story page.
  9. Is this the proper place to ask a general grading question with this book as the example? I understand it is the number and severity of defects that must be considered. But when you find one defect that will drop the grade significantly to a lower level, like the subscription crease here to a 6.0, do other defects that may be allowed for a 6.0 (?) take the grade down further?
  10. Thank you for the added input. I don't know what a tear seal looks like but the inside cover area looks like the crinkel with dust or dirt along the crinkel lines. I had the book since around 1975 and never touched it much or looked inside till last week. The book feels like a new book that has never been read. So the covers are nicely taunt to open. I hate to stretch that out but I was able to carefully get a better view of the inside front cover with these photos.
  11. Thanks to all for your great advice!
  12. Does anyone have insight as to the origin of the big crinkel at the front cover top staple? And how it affects the grade of this book - with and without the crinkel? It's interesting to me because it's a major trauma to the paper yet doesn't produce any perforations to the paper. The paper is solid there. Even more interesting because it looks flattened-out and continues under and all around the staples, yet is securely attached by the staples. Almost like the crinkel happened ...and then it was stapled.. Could this be? Might this be something that happened while the book was being produced? If so, might GCG consider this a production defect and grade this defect leniently? So again I am wondering what grade this book might get from GCG?
  13. Thank you for responding. I should have called out the big crinkel at the top staple, front cover.. The paper is not separated or split. It is securely fastened to the staple. I wonder what caused a defect like that..?
  14. Hi and thank you for your help and insight on grading this book.
  15. Has anyone followed the value and demand of Marvel Tales #98 & #99 reprinting Amazing Spider-Man #121 & #122? I bought multiple copies from a distributor when they came out in the 70's. They never made it to the newsstand to get handled there. And were kept in dry, dark stable living area room temp since then. So they are bright, white, flat and clean. Overstreet still lumps them together with the range of $3 books and does not show a special value to these issues...
  16. Does anyone have experience with those little spine tics and if a press will make them go away?
  17. Hello can I please have your grading opinion on my Nova #1? Before and after press? Will the spine tics disappear after a press?
  18. Thank you for all the details you included in your post. I will explore USPS further.
  19. No my collectables are not insured. My thinking is insurance is only as good as the insurance company. The best/major home/auto insurance companies cost way too much for a rider. I heard about comic book collectable companies with much lower premiums. But I have a hard time understanding how they can take such hi risk at low premiums and pay out what can be very large sums of money. The old "if it sounds too good to be true...". Any way I would not want to add insurance to a home policy for a mail shipment. Because you never want to make a home or auto claim as it can result in years of higher premiums. I was thinking it's much simpler to have insurance thru the shipper. If it's available and affordable. So I am wondering what freight companies do people use to send valuable comics thru the mail? Are any considered safer or more reliable? And do they insure packages for thousands of dollars?
  20. Hello, I am preparing my first shipment of books thru the mail. I want to insure the package in case of loss/ theft or damage. 6 comic books that have a FMV in the range of maybe $7,000 - $8,000. Does anyone have experience with which carrier is best to use? For instance, Fed-Ex directed me to their Revenue Dept which handles claims. I spoke to a supervisor there. They said they only offer insurance coverage up to $1,000 max on a package of collectable comic books. And Fed-Ex does not offer an option to buy insurance for a greater amount. So I am not able to insure for the full value of the parcel. Does this sound right?
  21. Thank you for your input! The effect of the tape is like a glue between 2 newsprint story pages. On newsprint, that seems like a permanent condition. I would have thought this affects the books value tremendously because it cannot be read. If I offer this for sale as-is, would it be fair to ask for 5.0 raw FMV? And after press, ask for maybe 6.0 FMV? In both cases, the interior story pages will still be stuck together.
