Marvel Westerns (Silver Age)
RockMyAmadeus replied to crimson dynamo's topic in Silver Age Comic Books
How have I missed this thread? I love Marvel Westerns almost as much as DC War. They provide an INCREDIBLE challenge to just about any type of collector, but especially high grade collectors, because the books simply don't exist. Amazing Spiderman in high grade? All it takes is money. Rawhide Kid #1-40 in high grade? Good luck. Here's my Kirby run...took me 8 years to finish, and the #17 was the last one. Paid $55, advertised as "VG++++", it's a G/VG, and a steal at twice the price. Here's my pre-17 run... And here's some Timely/Atlas issues, including Kid Colt #5 (I have a #6 around here somewhere) and a Two Gun #7. Sorry for the awful pics. -
I hate you. On a related note, it'd be really nice if Earl Shaw would come to the West Coast at some point.

I'm not disputing that they could have been some type of error, that were later used. I'm just saying I don't *believe* they are. I believe that they were intentional from the start, with no error at any point of their genesis. Someone call up Peter Laird, he'd know. -

TMNT newb. I'm fairly certain that the 500 copies weren't an error, that they were done on purpose. Eastman/Laird, or someone who has asked them that question could easily clear it up. -

Thank you. Dunno why people screw around with pics. "Wahh! It takes up bandwidth! Wahh!" Yeah, if 500 million people look at it. -

Most do. I have owned one and only one #3 variant...bought it off eBay in 2001-ish for the princely sum of $68...it was graded "NM" by some big New England type dealer (no, not NEC) It arrived, and had, at some point in its life, been folded in half at the spine. It was, AT BEST, a F/VF. The only problem was, if it had been adverted as a F/VF, it would have sold for around $30....which I would have been ok with. But since the seller lied about the grade, I paid more for it than I should, so I sent it back. To ype it off, the seller pretended they had another copy for sale, and they would "send out the other one when they received this one back." Lies, damned lies, and statistics. Of course, all I got was my money back. That deal still hurts, not just because I was robbed of a tough to find book at what NOW would be a steal, but because I was lied to with th promise of a "NM" copy in the wings. I really should have kept it, andI really should have only paid $30 for it. Oh well. -
Double would be one heck of a deal. Realistically, that book would sell for $4000-$5000. (thumbs u Hence my "offer". I had typed up a whole response, quoting GPA, but stupid Explorer froze, and it was all lost. But the last sale of the 9.0 was $1955 last fall. I already bid on yours. Yep, I paid $1955 plus buyer's premium. I forget what that was....10-15%, I think. Cost was $2200-$2300. I still figured that was a decent deal as the book was a $3000 book in my mind. I don't think we'll see a 9.2 or 9.4 of this book for years, if not ever. Mind you, only time will tell. My SSWS #85 CGC 7.5 is currently sitting at $1. Could be a steal?

This is a terrible picture, but notice that the LIGHT blues are missing. Compare with this: -

So, thumbing through the new OPG to check prices, and I notice that SSWS #84 is still radically underpriced. $450 for a 9.2? Yeah, ok. I'll gladly pay double OPG for one. (thumbs u

Wait, you were in SD and you didn't call me? You suck. Oh, and I picked up #1-3. Nice guy.

The 49 cent cover price Spire comics are from the 1980's. That's why I posted them. I know. Just giving you a hard time, because you're DUB-T. But you DID mix them in with some 70's drek.... Don't let it happen again.....I'm watching you.... You're not gonna be at SD are ya? I didn't know Mutant Manatee was Dub-T (Tony).... I bought some nice books from Dub-T a few years backs on E-bay....very good to deal with.... (thumbs u I  Dub-T. We go way back. One of my favorite posters of all time, who I finally got to meet last year at SD. -

So was he selling the book or running an auction? If his asking price was $350, then why in the world were people offering $450 and $500 for it? And if it were the case that he got an offer from a collector for $500, and his asking price was now $500, why didn't he just complete his transaction for the $500 and be done with it? Makes me wonder what he would have done if you would have said at $350. He probably would have sold it. Finghé told me to buy it, but I just couldn't justify the price. Yeah, yeah, it *might* be worth a lot more, but I also might be taking a bath on it, and I'm not in buy mode for the collection. You should have bought it. Comic collector FAIL. -

Soooo...in what has to be an odd coinkydink, this actual book was on a dealer's wall at SDCC. I saw it on Thursday, and inquired about it (because it had one of thos "ask for price" thingies, which I think are silly), and it was about a 6.5 or so. Not high grade at all. The dealer said I was the first person to ever ask about it, or even knew what it was, in 2 SDCCs. Price was $350. I didn't really have that much cash to throw around, but I called Finghé to see what he thought. He thought it was a steal. and that I should buy it. I didn't buy it. I always imagine I'll find anything for a price I'm willing to pay, and that generally holds true. But, out of curiosity, I went back today to see what the price was. It was now $500. Apparently, the dealer had gotten an offer from Jamie Graham for $450, and from a collector for $500. I kinda chuckled, and said "no problem. Thanks for letting me know." Now....I know it's rare. I get it. And, though I cannot find hide nor hair of it, apparently an 8.0 copy sold for $2,000 recently. So, even in 6.0-6.5 condition, it's probably "worth" $500. But I just can't bring myself to pay that kinda scratch for a 1980's Supes book that is mostly reprint anyways... Call me crazy. -

Wait wait wait. I thought your whole theory behind this stuff was "omg this stuff is so rare and so cheap right now, the golden age of buying" he says So these are going to come down? (yes i like giving you a hard time) You confuse the .0000001% that's actually RARE with the 99.999999% of stuff that's not. You also confuse conditional rarity with absolute rarity. This particular thread is about the .0000001% and the absolutely rare. Obviously, casual comments like the one quoted above are not meant to be doctrinal statements, capice? (thumbs u
