AWESOME!
I'm trying to put together a 9.8 set of all 11 issues. So far, I have 3. Don't have a #184!
-
in today:
Unbelievable! YAY!
-
yup, I think memory fades, but it is really hard to underestimate the importance of the B&W explosion, the second great wave of independent comic books and a huge boon to LCS (until it busted em.
). And of course, TMNT 1 was the landmark comic, (not the first, but the greatest) of the B&WE.
Did you read my analysis of that in "What modern will be worth the most in 20 years"...? In my most humble opinion, I think it's dead on balls.
-
There's an issue I forgot..Realm #4. Should be in issues of note.
-
The covers to Epic illustrated are some of the finest to grace any cover in the entire 1980's
As a matter of fact, we should display them in "classic copper covers"
-
Who is "the Punisher".....?
His real name Juan Carlos Waltermyer, as far as I know, he was a guy that roamed South America about 60 years ago searching for the fountain of youth, incidently,he found a series of hidden ruins off of the Edge of the Amazon. During his expedition everyone but two people died of Cholera. When he was trying to get sponsorship for a second trip he went temporarily insane, claiming some outrageous discoveries, like the "fact" that he discovered Santa's Secret workshop. My Uncle Chato and my Tio Beto met the guy in the Bolivian Patent office, where he was trying to Patent..his latest invention...The Burp, I don't think anybody believed that he invented the burp, or his more famous one..The happy face. He was trying to also patent the Exclamation mark but, apparently it had already been patented in Switzerland. He finally came back to reality, only to become a psychopath out for blood..at least now he was back to being himself..I think he changed his name there at the end...
Best.
Origin.
EVER.

If you give me a concrete set of Copper years, beginning and end, I'll give you the keys, semi-keys, and issues of note.
I asked this in the other thread almost exactly like this one, but I thought TMNT 1 was the generally agreed upon first comic book of the Copper age (1984).
I think that's a MUCH better start date for Copper. I don't like the various "age" nomenclature, because eventually you just run out, but it looks like Copper is here to stay.
1970-1980 is just far too short a time period for "Bronze." There just wasn't anything that turned the industry on its ear until Turtles #1 (not for lack of trying.)
There is a seismic shift in comics, starting in about 1984 that pretty much had the same impact that early Silver did: namely the period between 1984-1987 that saw the updating of nearly everything DC, the popularity of characters like the Punisher, the renewed popularity of characters like Superman, Batman, Flash, and Wonder Woman, who hadn't enjoyed such popularity for decades, and the appearance of writers like Alan Moore, Grant Morrison, and Neil Gaiman, which set the stage for the triumphs and tragedies oif the 90's.
Plus, that time period saw the rise and fall of one of the most speculative eras in comics history: the black and white explosion.

Dark Horse Presents #1 - first Concrete
Dark Horse Presents #50?( #51?) - first Sin City
These 2 should at least be "semi-keys"
You know, I answered this yesterday, but I'm not sure where it went.
DHP #1 is in the "issues of note" section. There just isn't any demand for the book any more. DH 5th Anniversary Special (1st Sin City) is listed in semi-keys.
DHP #51-62 are listed.

If you give me a concrete set of Copper years, beginning and end, I'll give you the keys, semi-keys, and issues of note.
Dazzler #1 to month prior to McSpidey #1.
When I get around to it, I'll do 1980-1983, too.
I can also do 1970-1979, and even Silver Age, but is a Silver Age list necessary? Doesn't everyone pretty much have the OPG for that?
-
I'll give someone a beat up copy of New Mutants #98 or #87, whatever I find, if they can come up with WHY all those issues are listed.
-
That list is tight. It looks like primer 2 is missing, though.
There are some super esoteric books missing, like Visions 1 and 2, Quadrant 1 etc. Overall an excellent list.
Edit: Visions is too early for this list and Quadrant is a magazine so I really may not have anything to add.
Tried to see if he missed 1st Xenozoic Tales or 1st app of the Mask, but RMA is on it!
Primer #2 is a a 1982 book. Quadrant #1 is a 1983 book. Parameters were 1984-1992. (and I didn't include magazines, or Epic Illustrated #25-34 would be on the list. I also didn't include Taboo on purpose, but I probably should.)
What kind of amateur do you think I am...?
oooo....I DID miss some books.
Creatures of the Id #1 - Semi-Key
Grafik Musik #1-4 - Issues of note
Graphique Musique #1-4 - Issues of note
Madman #1-3 - Issues of note
Madman Adventures #1 - Issue of note
(I forgot all about poor ol' Frank Einstein!)
Mayhem #1-4 - Issues of note
Silverback #1-3 - issues of note (I actually thought about these, they should be on the list.)
-
I think there should be a category between Major Keys and Keys, for stuff like X-Men 266 and New Mutants 87.
yeah, I think there might be some call for that. Harbinger #1 isn't a major key, but it's much more of a key than New Mutants #98.
-

* How I determine "status": recognition + popularity of book + popularity of character + value. Not everyone may agree with all placing, but it will be close. Books that are expensive, but not necessarily recognized (like Albedo #0 first printing variants) aren't going to be "major keys" and so forth. Likewise, a book may not necessarily be very expensive, but may be immensely popular, to be considered a "key" (a la X-Men #248.) Status can and has changed over the years.
(if you see an issue missing, check the date range given. It might fall out of that range.)
Did I forget anything....?

If you give me a concrete set of Copper years, beginning and end, I'll give you the keys, semi-keys, and issues of note.

Interesting thread. I believe MM #1-24 will never be reprinted again, and #25-26 will never be published.
I hope I'm wrong.
-
Who is "the Punisher".....?
-
Fresh out of the Box....
Copy A
Copy B
tsk tsk tsk....all those off-center books. Such junk. Well, at least you can sell them to me. What say 15% of GPA....?
(Seriously, well done. You get any of these books from Ed?)
-
yay! I have something to post!
My earliest Barks, low, low grade....but still a key issue.
-
You realize that I had the entire Epic Illustrated Line available (most for far less than $10) during most of the first 8 VCCs right?
(I have about 20 magazine boxes of Epic Illustrated.)
No. The last VCC was the first one I ever checked out.
And that's not shipped, right?
-
I honestly don't know. I would imagine the last 10 issues might. I think the reason they've been hard for more is that they're magazines, and a lot of stores don't like carrying magazines.
-
I love Epic. I really, really do. It is, bar none, my favorite comic magazine series. I just wish I could find the copies I need in reasonable shape for less than $10/each.
Shipping is dangerous, and expensive, and no store locally stocks them. The search goes on!
-
Let's see some pics then (thumbs u
I don't have the Epic #1 signed by Frazetta (I donated my copy to the recipient), but lemme hunt around and see if I can find a picture of it.
(RMA hunts around a bit.....)
Ah, here it is:
This was from chainnball's second round, and I reallllly wish Frazetta had used the gold pen on my Vampi #1....but that's ok.
She's a beaut, ain't she? I'm surprised it got a 9, but I'm thinking it was cause Mrs. Frazetta handled this one a little rough....
-
I LOVE Epic. I'm missing quite a few, but I can never find them cheap. I need #4-24 ish, minus a few issues. I have #25-34, and #1-3. One of my #1s was signed by the Master!

This Week Back From CGC

I never cease to be impressed by 70's books in 9.8. The books just weren't available to buy when I began collecting in 1990. The three Avengers Byrnes that I have in 9.8 I lucked upon, and then saved for 13 years in that condition. Boy howdy, were those great $1 purchases!
Avengers #182 is my oldest self-subbed 9.8.
