People collect what they want and always vote with their wallets. Prices on books go up if demand exceeds supply and people who want them are willing to pony up extra cash. The same is true for everything, including news stands. This all happens outside of individual opinions - for example, I cant fathom why the price of Hulk 181 still so high, but it does. It is more of a larger group-behaviour type of process.

I sent in 17 books to CL spread out over the auction that ended tonight and the previous one. There are more books in the next auction as well, but those ones are scraps that wont amount to much.
In terms of how I did - it was a bloodbath. I had one book that went a touch above where I was expecting, one that landed about where I figured it was, and the other 15 were 20% and more below what I thought was a good estimate given that CL books tend to underperform. All in all, I sent in the books to get credit that I planned to use to buy a bigger book, and I ended up about 2.5k short of my pessimistic pre-auction guesstimate. To make things worse, every time I put in a bid on a big book I was beaten out with some even going above GPA. I view this type of selling as a trade, in essence, and it isn't a very good trade when I am getting a fraction of value for my stuff and putting out full value for things I want.
On the plus side, even though there were many books (that should have been) in the $500-$1k range, and almost all underperformed, I was selling off doubles and extras so it doesn't hurt per se aside from an extremely strong sense of annoyance over how it all played out. Oh well, c'est la vie. And I did manage to pick up a Hulk 181 for a crack and resub so if that goes well maybe I will make back part of my losses. A two or three step bump should bring me back to level.

Why would they keep newsstand copies? They could buy them directly at 50% off if they weren't going to return them.
Don't know the ins and outs of his business or his comic collecting.

I remember the crash in the 1990s well. There was a local auction that had a bunch of leftover recent books that did not sell from a comic store that shut down. It filled a few pallets that sold for 50 or 70 bucks each, dont remember the exact number. Those were rough years for stores, but great for collectors who just wanted to fill out their runs and beef up their collections.

Just touching base again to see if an answer to my question has been found. I realize this one will take a bit of research and could take time so just bumping to keep it on the radar

After skimming over the list that is a lot of hurt for a lot of sellers. I was expecting a good balance of red and green based on hearing Motor City was a decent selling Con and comments in this thread but all I see is a lot of red even on the far left. Bunch and bunch of 30% and more drops on some of the biggest and best books in the industry is just sad at this point (being several years past COVID boom). I see a couple Spidey issues that did very well but I'm hoping the second part has a whole lot more green!
The Vengeance of Bane in this list was mine, and yeah I was a little miffed at the hammer price especially with all of my books in the previous auction going for 25% and more below GPA value. But this list is not complete and depending on what books you were after the experience of this auction could easily have been that the prices were very strong. Every book I bid on went really high up until I finally picked up a Hulk 181, and I wasnt going to even bid on that one because I (along with many others) suspect the price will dip after the Deadpool movie comes out.

Yeah, they definitely are not everywhere.
As a side note, a good friend of mine has owned a store for many years and he has a lot of news stand books that did not sell when they were released. I pressed and sent in a Batman Adventures 12 news stand for him and it landed on 9.8, which made him very happy. People who owned actual news stands where these were distributed may be doing well if they kept the leftover books.

Working on it There were some crazy strong results. I started to bid on this one but quickly realized there were others with a much stronger itch. Attaching the last sale on Heritage as a comparison.
Earlier today, when it was sitting at 5500, I was thinking of chasing the restored AF15 with glue holding the cover on, and then it shot up to over 12k which is too close to what an unrestored copy would go for. Wild auction.

Do tell por favor?
Here is the most recent example. I am focusing on books I can crack, fix up, and resubmit. This copy of ASM 129 is a great candidate for that.
Last sale in GPA was $1920, and 90 day GPA is $2233. I put in a bid for 2327 and lost out already, and the auction isnt even over.

Can't wait for the @DC# breakdown of the current CL auction. Everything I have bid on so far went well above GPA.

I already did. Tbh. I think I accidentally responded to the wrong post. New to the chat boards. It was the gentleman that had a vintage submission from 4/24 and is 2 weeks in GEI. You responded to him and I meant to do the same and responded to you. My Apologies.
No worries at all, and welcome to the boards!
I hope your submission makes it through soon and that your grades are good

Vintage fast track.
Right, so the timing for my books going through stages of the Modern tier doesn't apply.
The TAT for Vintage Fast Track is currently listed as 15 working days (holidays and weekends do not count). If your books are well beyond that I would contact customer support.

Hopefully mine will be right behind your. Just aggravated I paid the additional for fast track.
Which tier is your order in? It matters in terms of TATs and how fast it goes through the different stages.

My F5 key was getting a real workout this time around because I was hoping it would be graded before the USA long weekend. It is well ahead of TAT estimates so super happy to see this

From the dawn of CGC until a month ago: 28 total CGC 9.9 Wolverine 1 minis out of 28,000 subs. So basically 1/1000.
Last month to this month: 10 newly slabbed 9.9 Wolverine 1 minis.
That's esentially statistically impossible without a change in grading standards and a conscious push to move the effective top of the scale from 9.8 to 9.9.
Good luck to the guys collecting top census common books.
Not quite how stats work.
"Highly unlikely" would be better, and including the actual likelihood would be best. Just leaving out the part with stats and just saying it is your opinion also works.

GEI for Moderns seems a bit slower than usual right now. No biggy and I am sure it will land well within the TAT, but nothing like the day or two turn through that stage that we experienced a few months ago.

Collectors Who Really Prefer Low Grade?
in Comics General
Posted
I tried separating out low grade books into a bin called 'Low Grade is Better than No Grade." I brought these out three shows in a row and did not sell a single comic from this group.
I am sure there is a market for this stuff, but that market does not exist here. In my area people prefer to pay low grade prices for books that are in nice condition.
