  1. I sure don't but it is possible to buy different pieces of Dell'Otto original artwork (1:1) at that type of money. Value is always going to have some level of subjectivity to it but i'm not sure I get the allure (at 5K+) of this particular comic. There are much better looking Dell'Otto covers out there and there's nothing special about this book regarding story or 1st appearances. Yes it is rare as a ratio variant. Aren't there other rare ratio variants and isn't that the intentions of those type of books? I don't see how in 5-10 years a ratio variant with nothing going for it other than rarity and a cool cover is going to stay at that price level. Maybe i'll be wrong and I am in the minority since i'm not looking to spend that type of money on this book. Let me say that I am a fan of him as an artist and he puts out some tremendous artwork although 20K for a modern variant book seems like people having more money than they know what to do with at least to me. Realistically, someone spending that type of money isn't going to care about what I have to say on it anyway.
  2. Is this real life? Why not just buy Dell'Otto OA at that price?
  3. Some great looking covers. Is this book as good as the hype? I haven't read any of it nor do I know much about them other than hearing about potential movie hype.
  4. At that price, better off getting a comicmount: https://collectormount.com/shop?olsPage=products%2Fcomicmount
  5. I found this documentary to be awful and go into this tangent with bad acting about his father as opposed to the actual state of the market. I took the chance of watching it as I did love the hobby and grew up collecting both cards and comics with a larger focus in the 80's on trading cards. I sold a majority of my card collection at the same time as I sold my large comic collection in the early 90's once I left for the boot camp. Found a few hundred decent rookie cards in my fathers attic a few years back and sold them on Craigslist for $500. I'm pretty sure I could have gotten some graded and made out pretty well but didn't want to go through the trouble and didn't care any more for the hobby. Players can and will have historical values for some time to come and so will the superheroes we love. The difference is that superheroes are mythical with no real world attachment to players who are people at the end of the day. For that reason, I've found myself being more attached to comics as I've gotten older where I can appreciate the stories and artwork as opposed to players that are just human beings. I don't care to idolize human beings with real human faults where as I can still get nostalgic flashbacks of looking at a comic cover or flipping through pages of a book I read when I was a kid. That's my own person reasoning but I see the reasoning behind people collecting either and the wild market of grading will continue to keep prices strong for either "key" cards or comics.
  6. Downloaded and briefly browsed the app. Very clean and well done interface. Glad to see thoughtful responses to all questions. I'll reach out if I have any questions or have any constructive criticism.
  7. As an 80's kid, these pics are awesome. I remember going with my older brother to random shoes on Long Island especially at those Marriott shows in the late 80's and early 90's. Would love to keep seeing more of these pics.
  8. 1973 SDCC pics: http://www.comicconmemories.com/2010/02/28/more-1973-san-diego-comic-con-photos-can-you-identify-people-in-the-pictures/
  9. The purpose of following someone is to see their posts in your feed when you scroll through your own page. Some profiles are also private and only allow you to view their page if you follow them.
  10. It will be difficult to pin point specific sellers of PCH and Horror books. Your best bet is to do a search with #comicsforsale then choose the tab recent and scroll through everything. You'll find a mix of books there and occasionally some horror books. You could also follow accounts like dreamtoreal1, streyflexin, tftv_comics as they occasionally list horror books for sale.
  11. Thanks for sharing. Brings back some nostalgia on going to shoes in the late 80's to early 90's. Is there a thread somewhere around with older pics of vendors at comic shows at around that time period? I'd love to see board members that have been in the game a while posting pics of their setups and "overpriced" wall books.
  12. I do enjoy the artwork and welcome contributions like this. There does seem to be a difference as adding a marking whether it is a signature or sketch is adding a layer on top of the cover where burning is actually removing a layer or pieces of a cover. The integrity and completeness of the book can still be judged even with a signature or artwork on top but this is different.
  13. Been after this book for a while, glad to have a copy even in low grade.
  14. Bought a cheap book off Michael, easy to deal with and packaged right. Thanks again!
  15. I understand his argument completely and I do agree with others that he is not wrong but you can't expect everyone to pick up a series at issue 1 or 2. Comics are now 3-6 bucks a pop, gone are the days of spending 20 bucks at a shop and getting 10-20 books to read weekly. I tried to start getting back into pulling books weekly last year but that got expensive quickly for some of the books that weren't all that interesting and would end up in the dollar bin a month later. There are plenty of other factors much more important to the down fall of retail comic shops and the hobby other than speculators. I get his anger but he might be better suited aiming it elsewhere than potential customers.
  16. Why not? Batman 251 and ASM 33 are outliers in pricing due to their cover, not the story, character appearances or anything along those lines.
  17. Its a bit of a stretch. People go after that book for the cover and its distinction as being a classic cover.
  18. Is the book really that special without the cover though? A first time meetup between 2 heroes doesn't quadruple the price over the other issues.
  19. Interesting thread to read through and yes i'm resurrecting a 4 year old thread. Definitely seems like the different cover art and artists bring different subjective opinions to their artwork. It does seem like there is a bit of biasing towards someones opinion whether they idolize someone (Kirby, Ditko) or really dislike someones work (Liefeld). Kirby/Ditko have some not so great looking covers with plenty of errors in drawing the human body while NM 98 is loved by many even if its not the best artwork (no its not 5th grade level artwork for all the extreme Liefeld haters out there). Imagine if people picked apart Kirby and other classic artists for their anatomy choices. Xmen 1 is picked apart at points in this thread when it's an iconic cover introducing a team with minor goofs aimed at children/young adults. Hulk 181 being an ugly cover? I love the action drawn between hulk/wolverine with the red background. Floating heads not your thing even if the art is done well? TOS39 with anatomy issues but a nice simple introduction of a new character? These examples are far from ugly IMO as are others mentioned in this thread. There is a difference between artwork not being your taste or liking and deeming it as ugly.
  20. This list will get huge pretty quick especially adding in books that don't have an "official" designation yet. Could reference this existing thread for what's already included according to CGC and Overstreet:
