  1. Last year I sent a package Priority Mail from Alabama to MCS, who happens to be USPS' biggest customer in Arlington Texas. It was addressed correctly. The package hit 22 different stops in Texas that I could track online, claiming there was no such address. My local Post Office got involved after 25 days . They wouldn't let me see the 8 sheets of paper detailing all of its stops due to coding numbers. But I got the package back, took it to UPS and it was delivered in 2 days.

I did get my PM fees immediately refunded.

Cool books! Ihate seeing it but did these get damaged in transit? Similar bottom right corner crunch between the two that I’m all too familiar with from improper packaging.

No, that is the way they were when I bought them. I'm pretty sure I should be able to flip them at a grade of 6.0. They are really high gloss and if it weren't for the damaged corners.....

  3. Had my first somewhat disappointing auction experience with MCS recently, but it wasn't their fault. Listed an ASM 27vg and it sold for $81. Then, nothing happened for three weeks. This was unusual because they state in their terms for bidding that you have 7 days to pay. Got an email from MCS apologizing that the bidder wouldn't pay and was banned from bidding there. So once again I had the choice of listing it at auction or consignment. Put it back up for auction and hoping it does well this week.

I never understood how Famous Monsters' content didn't get stale, it doesn't seem like there were enough new horror movies coming out every month during that period to fill the pages and kids in the 60s surely got tired of reading about lon chaney, but I guess with all the foreign films, maybe. I guess a lot of it was short fiction and what not?

Oh it got stale, especially if you were a long time reader. They started sliding reprinted articles in slowly at first, but boy they started a recycling program as time went on! The readership kept changing, so to new readers, it was new stuff. It was specifically aimed at an 11 year old audience. But back in the 60's, there wasn't really any way to see all of the stills that popped up in FM.

Castle Of Frankenstein catered to a much older reader (and more sophisticated one). It was more serious and less punny. COF got even better for me after the first 5 issues or so, but distribution was a real nightmare.

I stopped reading FM after issue 106. In 104 Forry Ackerman used Robert Bloch to write an article to get readers to send FJA a buck so he could keep his place, and that pissed me off.

I pick it up now for nostalgic reasons and the great covers. If I want real film scholarship I'll pick up Little Shoppe of Horrors (and a few others) or the sadly defunct Monsters From The Vault

  5. Wasn't there a lot of blue dong in the Watchman series? Or was that just the movie?

I like the artist but don't plan on picking this up until it comes out in a tpb. I stopped buying the "floppies" months ago. And if people want to pay outrageous prices just to look at Batman's junk, well, there's one born every minute.

Does this fly? Can you simply write in the body of the listing your restrictions and they're binding (eBay will back you)? I always wanted to be more selective on who my buyers are but eBay has limited options...

I have seen it on quite a few listings. Whether or not ebay will back you up on it is another story. Again, I haven't sold anything on ebay since 2008, and things have changed in that time frame.

  7.  I don't send books off to CGC,  I buy them on the "secondary" market. But the Newton Rings may be the catalyst where I bail out of this area of collecting. If there is a CGC book listed on ebay, I'm going to start asking them if there are Newton Rings. Either that or just avoid buying books slabbed since 2016.

And we can sit here and debate the cause of Newton Rings until doomsday. The real point is, they are as ugly as your sister's prom date and detract from the look of the book.

  8. I picked up these FM's and the 67 is decades older than the 71 (don't ask). I already had a copy of 67 that I had picked up decades ago from Mile High Comics using their trade system. Anyway, this #67 I snagged on ebay for $5 and it is wonderful. At least an 8.5 if not a 9.0. I may flip my older copy when I compare them. The 71 should be a fun read. Great covers, with 67 by Vic Prezio and 71 by Joe Jusko.
