  1. Is there a Golden Age war thread? This Quality war book from 1953 sure didn't draw much attention. G. I. Combat 7 from June 1953. GCD says that there might be a Crandall story. No one's going to be jealous about its condition. Seller's scan. Jack
  2. If that cover didn't at least partially inspire the climax of Ghostbusters, I'll eat my yellow snow. Jack
  3. Nice, now if I can just keep my daughter from seeing these I will be ok. Reader copies of some of the issues around 1960 are cheap (if you don't mind distributor's ink) because of warehouse finds, I think. Possibly skypinkblu still has some from the Bakertowne stash. Really fun Grossman art in all, if I remember right. Jack
  4. going to check out page 14 now, Jack. If it lasts more than four hours, seek immediate medical help to avoid long-term injury. If that's OK with Mrs Parker. Jack
  5. Did you take the Magic Tab, Billy, or did someone beat you to it? Jack
  6. Those presents are nice -- real nice. Can you send them to the cornfield, Anthony? Jack
  7. There's something unnerving about that cover -- the point of view, I think. It's like the Townspeople in Hats are gleefully welcoming Galactus! Any idea who drew it? Classic postwar commercial style. How many voices does Walter Schumann have? Jack
  8. Your sister is lovely. Does that mean that you're an insect? More like a pupa. Just ask my students. Jack
  9. Not too surprising! I have a similar WF 3 missing covers and about 2.5 pages. Very nice. I never made the cover of Nature either, but my sister made the cover of Science! I wish I had a bigger picture (it's a close-up of a butterfly wing). Jack
  10. WHOA! LUCKY CATCH! World's Finest Comics #2 [Johnny in the Army] (Sequence 5 - Story , 8 pages ) Feature Story: Johnny Thunder The Man Who Couldn't Remember! (Sequence 12 - Story , 13 pages ) Feature Story: Batman GCD is good for superhero story titles -- when the server is up. For anything but superheroes, spotty. Jack
  11. The castle looks like it might be pictured on the cover of Four Color #23. Absolutely right, BZ. From a friend on the Four Color project: Jack
  12. HOLY FUDD! I've posted some Raggedy Ann pages on the boards, but this tops them all! Is it from one of the Four Color books? The early ones were 64 pp + covers w/ no ads. If you have the story title or first line of dialog, it might be possible to ID it. Thanks for posting the great centerfold. Jack Jack, here is the first page. Is it listed in the GCD? A lot of these golden age gems are missing from the inventory but I haven't checked for this one. bb Almost as nice as the centerfold! No, the story doesn't seem to be in GCD yet. I'm pretty sure that you can narrow it down to Four Color 5 or 23, maybe 45, based on page count and lack of ads. Shiverbones might have a clue. Probably the cover-to-cover Four Color scanning project has it -- I'll ask. If you figure it out, let me know and it moves higher on my want list! Jack
  13. WOW! What a great Christmas cover! Certainly the one that I'm most likely to actually buy of the books that you just posted. Crisp, deep colors. Rube Grossman, right? Jack

  15. Another show-off! Were these really all comic books as we think of them today? Maybe we need a new sub-forum. Jack
  16. What a great Short Bus set! This is my favorite cover of them. Maybe if you were more careful where you set your comic books down you wouldn't have to keep buying this one! I wouldn't mind seeing the hanging funny animal and ghost Christmas tree if you could scan or photograph without damage. Jack
  17. Uh-oh. shiverbones -> yulebones -> now turkeybones Fickle! Jack just wait 'til bunnybones shows up next Easter Rabbits taste pretty good. Reminds me of chicken. They were popular items on the menu in Belgium. They were also popular in Michigan during the financial breakdown of the seventies. I like rabbit too -- we used to cook it at least once a week when we live in Germany. Hassenpfeffer is a highly regarded dish. Deer is more popular than either possum or squirrel here. I've never had either, but I understand they're mighty gamy. Apparently honest-to-goodness burgoo is supposed to have one or both. Jack

  19. What the heck? Has a combination of Red and Green Kryptonite turned shiverbones into yulebones? Great catch! Do you know who drew the classic cover? It'd be wonderful to index this one for GCD -- only 4 indexed in the series. There's some controversy about including them because many are under 50% "sequential art". Congrats. Jack
  20. Oh yeah? I think he looks like YOU' MOMMA! Jack guess I told him Why don't people ever say Yo Faddah;)? Because he MIGHT look like you' faddah in this case. :makepoint: Jack You're gonna wear that hammer out. Jack If all you have is a hammer, everything looks like a nail. Bernard Baruch
  21. the guy in the red robe up front on the left side looks just like Foggy Nelson! Oh yeah? I think he looks like YOU' MOMMA! Jack guess I told him Why don't people ever say Yo Faddah;)? Because he MIGHT look like you' faddah in this case. Jack
  22. Wow, great catches all! My Greatest Adventure 59 is actually in my league, but your copy is so much nicer. The running woman leading a pack of animals (sort of a Diana image) is a comic-book cover favorite. I wonder how many are out there? Somebody tell Supes that one monkey and one leopard does not make a leopard pack. Jack

  24. You've probably got it about right. I might be remembering wrong, but didn't Betty move to Riverdale (if it was called that) in the first Archie story in Pep Comics 22? Not exactly grew up with. (Anyone have a scan of the story? It's probably been reprinted, but I don't have it.) Veronica didn't arrive until a few issues later, right? Jack
