  1. Starting out with a BANG! Sub-100, Walt Kelly, nice copy AND beak abuse by a cricket. Outstanding. Jack (surprised I can still find my way here)
  2. Say, I think she's very high grade! I first encountered Sharon when she used to outbid me all the time on ebay years ago. I was happy to "meet" her here and have had many fantastic purchases and trades with her, as well as many conversations. She's even shopped for me in Chicago. Highest recommendation! Jack
  3. I'd love to know the meaning of the Japanese word on the torture device. Ask a linguist: "> Marc, does the Japanese (?) -script on this cover mean anything? No, it's as 'realistic' as the green guys on the cover. But I do like being asked! I've almost never seen realistic uses of Asian scripts in comics except in recent years. (Disclosure: I was a consultant on IRON MAN: HYPERVELOCITY which has more foreign languages in it than any other American comic I can think of.) Maybe I've seen one or two Silver Age comics in which the artist tried very hard to copy some random Asian text on hand, but I can't remember what those were." Jack your friend wouldn't be so quick to dismiss the realism of the green men if he had the chance to see us guys at ponscon a couple hours after g.a.tor has mexican. That explains the three guys on their knees and the blue swirls up near the idol. Jack

  5. This cover kind of reminds me of Jumbo Comics 10 with the dragon, spear and wonky perspective. Either that's a very small dragon or he has a very long arm. Not too phallic, eh? It looks like Kaänga borrowed the Rifleman's log, plus the spear, plus the snake in the foreground. Jack
  6. Bizarre! I had to look the show up on wikipedia. 1960, live action with puppet fish, filmed through an aquarium for aquatic effects. The fish with a cigarette (Trigger) cracks me up. There's a second issue featuring his mermaid friend. Diver Dan 2 Has anyone here ever seen the show? It looks like a precursor of Krofft shows like H. R. Pufnstuf. Jack
  7. Son, next time I catch you in the hemp field, I'll kick your butt from here to next Tuesday! Jack
  8. My first glance at the boards in ages. When does summer vacation start? Is the 16-page surprise that the first four wraps are text stories and ads printed on glossy paper with sepia ink? I just got a Crime Does Not Pay 45 (sorry, no scan, no working scanner, and at the moment no office to put a scanner in) and was surprised myself. Jack Jack, The 16 page surprise looks to be a bunch of extra "True Crime" text stories in the middle of the book, printed on regular newsprint. EDIT: BB-Gun beat me to it. BB-Gun is quick on the draw! Interesting that the format of the bonus changed and only lasted 5 or 6 issues. Was 49 the last "bonus" or the first without? They must have been experimenting. The extra pages of 45 have a lot of ads not aimed at children. Jack
  9. The books may be crumbled to dust by the time I find them! Jmg's too. But the good news is that the furniture is supposed to go back into my renovated office Tuesday (only a week late, which isn't too bad) and my hope is to sort everything as I move it back in. I'll probably be able to throw out or recycle up to half of it. Humor? Jack

  11. besides animal comics, she prints and collects all posts by gator that have any misspellings in them. she needs a warehouse worse than beerbohm. I would say she does. Let's all hope that she doesn't have a flood. Jack
  12. It's more frustrating than anything. I mean, how do you I.D. a Matt Baker balloon or a Bob Powell cow? ... And here's one for G.A.tor: Interesting page, but what the ding-dong does that section about alkali mean? AlkaliEs? Who spells it like that? Besides which, alkaloids have little to do with alkalis aside from a similar name and usually being (nitrogen) bases. A little knowledge... Jack
  13. Depends on how big it was when it started. Jack probably Big Head Todd and the Monsters
  14. Sorry, that would be Danish Nazi Gorilla #1, Spring of 1939. That's what they want you to believe. What about Obadiah Oldgorilla, 1843? JPS man, that is a GREAT avatar; where'd you come up with that? It's a good likeness, don't you think? Jack Thanks for the "loan"

  16. Fantastic -- I'm finding Golden Age non-superhero books more interesting all the time. Great cartooning on the cover and H&J page. Any idea who drew them? Timely's funny animal regulars? Bails' Who's Who suggests GANTZ, DAVID (most likely) CARIN, FRANK GILL, RAY STRAUBING, HAL DESCHAMPS, BOB (inks) Jack
