What keeps me from spending 5x my usual budget? Nostalgia It must be something I have a strong connection to reading or seeing when I was growing up. This basically eliminates anything done in the last 25 years.

Yup, no changes this year. I have brought the suggestions from last year to Bill but he has been so busy with is move down south, OA Expo and expanded CAF interviews, sales act. He has not had the time to look into improving The Best of.

At the beginning of every New Year, CAF celebrate the best collected works of the prior year, with the annual Best Of competition. Even though the submission process doesn't begin until January 3rd 2024 your artwork must be submitted to your CAF Gallery in 2023 in order to participate in the Best of 2023. It can be in any Gallery Room in your CAF Gallery, but it must be added to CAF before midnight EST this Sunday, December 31st. So get your art posted before New Years! When the Best Of 2023 selections start you will choose from any of the pieces in your CAF that you uploaded during 2023. Best of selections will start January 7th at the latest, where you will choose your entries from existing artwork in your CAF Gallery. On that day we'll announce instructions for how to do this. I started out with onelist before comicart-l and I remember the Comic Town collection. I picked up a sweet George Perez New Teen Titan splash featuring Starfire from the 2nd run.

I wish there were dealer websites where everyone saw the update for the site tat the same time. Even if its in the middle of the night. When I started back in the 80s there was just the Comics Buyer's Guide which had the ads for comic books and comic art for sale. Some of the dealers today were advertising in the CBG. It was a publication which shipped to the readers/collectors on the east coast then made it to the west coast. Unfortunately, much of the new art offered in CBG was already sold. Some smart collectors had it shipped overnight so they had a better chance of buying artwork. Being on the west coast it was CBG, cons (only SDCC and Wonder Con) and Mitch's catalogues were the only way to buy comic art way back then.

We can all say that.

My understanding is this is the best condition complete StormTrooper costume. Greg Jein who used to won it and it was his collection that it and the X-Wing came from. He was THE prop collector, one others come to to get items authenticated. No surprise the StormTrooper was the best example out there.

The paying for the X-Wing is off to a good start after a day, just under 10%.

Makes me feel even better what I paid for my recent Bob Kane acquisition.

The silver lining for us poorer collectors.

Great episode!!!! I have been following Stuff Dreams are Made Of over the last 3 seasons. David and Ryan are great to listen to, especially when talking about the upcoming prop auctions. They can be very informative and funny. Ryan leads from his brain he over analyzes the props he might bid one, David from the heart when the nostalgia really hits him. The episodes leading up to the Greg Jein auction was fun to watch. I had dabbled in props before but recently I got two big items one in the Jein auction. I which caused me to let go of a few pieces of art. SO I know what David is going thru, on a much lower level. Some amazing pieces David is putting up in the Jan Ha auction, Daredevil #42 Colan is what really catches my eye but I already have a Colan DD from around the same time so I will just be a spectator. I look forward to the next Flix Lu podcast with Mandel to reveal what more he is letting go to fund his X-Wing. If there are OA collectors who have not watched the Stuff Dreams AR Made Of podcasts I highly recommend the most recent one "The Wives 2.0"

I didn’t achieve any of my collecting goals that I listed for 2023 But I did acquire two pieces which met goals of previous collecting years that included Bob Kane artwork Gil Kane page featuring Morbius not from ASN but a minor series Giant Size Super-Heroes #1

The unpublished one went for $2880. Its really strange that the Spy vs Spy 1-pages from Mad Spy vs Spy paperbacks go for $4K and the vertical Spy vs Spy top tier from Mad magazine go for around the same amount. Yet the one from Mad (pior to issue #126) are twice the size on heavy illustration board. Which is crazy. Its like a comic book cover by a big name artist is the same value as a cover of a magazine by the same artist and have the same characters. The paperback Spy vs Spy are is nice but the ones from Mad are far superior. Plus from issues #60 to #125 there was two parts to the Spy vs Spy gag an upper part of one panel with Prohias written in morse code and a bottom 2nd 6-panel gag. Both are 17x13. Many of the two tier Mad Spy vs Spy have been broken up. I feel lucky to own a complete two tier Spy vs Spy plus two Spy vs Spy vs Spy (Gray Spy was added for 20 gags in Mad magazine). Brian

Wonder if that one had a matching 6 panel gaga like his published ones in Mad #125 and prior.

I just prefer the bw inked original artwork. The use of light and shadow is what attracts me to many pieces that are from comic books I do not read. I love looking at the fine line work. Some inked art does take a longer time Mark Schultz is a perfect example, takes a longer time and has a much smaller body of work.

Not sure what you are asking. HA does produce hires scan of the art they auction off just not high enough to reproduce in print for. HA does have the right to scan the art for auction but that is all.

Heritage scans are not good enough for the AE books. They do not want people reproducing the artwork at full size.

Market might be cooling, but I saw a number of pieces related to ones I have in my collection going for some strong prices. Not Kirby, Romita or Lee pages.

I didn't see the one at Society of Illustrators, but I did bid on the one in HA. I agree it is a great story by Pablo but with prices going up I will have to be satisfied with my splash from the issue.

I am really surprised by Pablo Marcos Vampirella #80 panel page 2 sold for $4200 I love Pablo Vampirella but that is alot for a panel page of his. What do you think Gene since you used to be the Vampire market?

I have enjoyed Comic Art Live over the last couple of years. I have picked a few pieces that I have conveted for years, plus other published art from series I had not read. Earlier this year in May CAL I bought four great pieces under $500. Last weekend I only bought a $20 prelim but I enjoyed looking thru all the art. Looking forward to next years CAL.
