  1. I held my breath when this got posted since I wanted the page to go along with my new Cap 1. Fortunately, I still got page 15 at what I think is a reasonable price considering that Cap is in every single panel, or close to it
  2. I just can’t imagine it. Anyone looking to spend this kind of money - wouldn’t you think they would be more prudent than this?
  3. I thought I’d seen it all . . . https://www.ebay.com/itm/MARVEL-MILESTONE-CAPTAIN-AMERICA-1-CGC-SS-9-4-STAN-LEE-QUOTE-INSCRIBED-REMARK/264283948216?hash=item3d888d04b8:g:plIAAOSwP8db7ikZ I was wrong Oh, I almost forgot: https://www.ebay.com/itm/Captain-America-1-Cgc-9-8-Signed-By-Stan-Lee-Super-Rare-1-Of-1-Which-Is-Signed/293058940721?hash=item443bac8f31:g:NRcAAOSw8axaJvgo
  4. Ok there have been a lot of names put out there who are dealers, but not auctioneers. I have bought books straight up from dealers, but unlike auctions, I have a hard time knowing if I am paying FMV. It’s psychologically different buying a book straight up in a one on one transaction. I think it takes balls to do it
  5. You know, I’ve left a marker in place on the stocks I sold to acquire my books. With the push of a button I’ll be able to compare what the stock value would have been, had I left it alone, to my take once I liquidate the books. It’ll be my own little scientific study. Truly I don’t care if I lose a few bucks. There’s a lot of stress in our chosen field, and the books help me cope. I don’t think I’ll need the crutch when I retire, but who knows. Maybe I’ll need them more than ever when all I do is sit around in my bathrobe all day, scratching my butt
  6. How could I miss it. Woo woo, you crack me up. I screenshotted it to my wife, who I’m sure did an elaborate eye roll
  7. I like the idea of lining the casket, but no. My plan is when I quit the practice of law in 6 years, at the age of 70, I’ll sell the books and buy a Swiss chalet. Or, depending on the sale, maybe a double wide
  8. Ha! Pic to be posted soon. CGC is gonna reholder it first
  9. +1. I’ve gotten to the point where I may still monitor the boards, but I’m exactly where I need to be with my collection, and consider my days of active acquisition to be done
  10. Isn’t it interesting that not one Boardie even mentioned Hakes. Has anyone here ever bought or sold in Hakes?
  11. I’m sorry to hear about your negative experience with CC. Those things warrant your opinions. I have had the opposite experience and I prefer CC. Heritage: Love Ed Jaster and the marketing, but dont do much business with them otherwise. I don’t like their percentage of each book, and since I’m a texas resident, I have always had to pay sales taxes. Once I won a More Fun 73 at auction, but got a call from some rude “higher up” who told me there was a mistake and I wasn’t the winner after all. I like that Heritage hosted a reception after John Verzyl’s funeral. Clink: no real problems, other than I wish they’d post the back covers and send their sales data into GPA CC has always delivered for me
  12. I agree about the colors and eye appeal. It’s a great book. Bad timing for me, though. 2 months ago I was heavy in the hunt, but took Filter81’s instead. Otherwise, I would have made my move on this one.
  13. Thinking people probably did have Hitler figured out by then. But a lot of Americans buried their heads in the sand and said “not my problem”. And truly Hitler has his supporters: the lunatic fringe was then as the lunatic fringe is now.
  14. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Captain_America is a good start
  15. Actually, the appearance of Cap 1 caused a lot of ruckus. At that point, many Americans hadn’t decided if this Hitler guy was really bad or not, with some actually liking the guy( and fast forward to today: the more things change, the more they stay the same). So when this book was published, there was a backlash from a certain segment of the population. So much so that the mayor of New York had to provide police protection to Simon and Kirby. It’s easy to look back now and know what a monster Hitler was, but at the time, this was groundbreaking stuff
  16. Such a cool book. This thread needs a bump: Comicconnect has one coming up in their next featured auction https://www.comicconnect.com/bookDetail.php?id=828094
  17. This one doesn't show a grade. What could possibly go wrong?
