  1. I remember the scene. I think they were called Dallas Fantasy Fair(before the name got ripped off by bigger players 20 years later). They used to be run by Larry Lankford (Moondog productions). Larry was an ex prison guard who ran these shows for 4 or 5 years before running off with exhibitors money. I remember @MrBedrock was one of the regulars who set up in these shows, and he might have some stories. I set up every now and then but discovered quickly I was not cut out for the circuit and decided I was better off just being a collector. A man's got to know his limitations.
  2. Yes @Comics181, this is even before Cap 1. Though the other publishers would only publish enemy soldiers in generic uniforms, Timely came straight at the reader with nazi uniforms
  3. I know this book was recently discussed in another thread, but I must have misunderstood. I thought that the 2 brothers that bought this book would have paid less than $900k for it. @sfcityduck said there were 11 books that sold for more than $900k. Are the Wonder Woman books that recently failed to meet reserve part of the 11 book pool? Sorry I'm a bit slow on the uptake here
  4. There's just so many questions, but I will limit it to: Which book purchase is regretted, if I may ask . . .
  5. None of us have the resources to collect everything we want; all of us are forced to make choices. It’s a big world out there, and every genre we collect is at the cost of another. is there a book in your collection that, to you, is so representative of a genre that you can look yourself in the mirror and say “I’m done”? Is there a book in your collection that is so representative of a genre that you feel free to move on? I was big into WWII war covers, but realized very quickly I couldn’t get em all. So I’ve settled on my favorite cover and released the rest. Then, @Ricksneatstuff got me into GGA, and there I went, chasing a different flock of geese. @Gotham Kid got me into Pre-Robin Tecs, same result. Yesterday there appeared a thread about a piece of John Buscema art that had just sold on the Bay, and @delekkerste said “it’s the closest thing to a one-and-done piece you'll find that encapsulates an era”. It’s what gave me the idea for this topic. Anyway, below is the Buscema piece, followed by a couple of books that, for me, scratch the itch for a couple different genres, and releases me to turn my attention elsewhere. is there such a book in your collection? My favorite WWII war cover! my favorite GGA cover
  6. Wow. So how has his legacy affected the course of his life?
  7. Put me in the "no" category. The future is too iffy right now. Only just yesterday the world was hoarding toilet paper (hey mods, leave me alone; this is NOT political)
  8. Agreed. The sweet spot for me has always been $5k to $10k books. I'm not a dealer. I'm not in it to flip. But when my collecting goals change course, and I let go of the old crop to make room for the new, this is the segment that has done the best for me. Books cheaper than that don't make much difference to the bottom line, and books more expensive than that are too hit and miss. Do I still pick up the occasional bigger book? Well, yes. But not with any thought other than the book is important to me and I want to make it a permanent member of the family.
  9. Does anyone know why the consignor of all these beautiful Supes books has decided to part with them? Is he quitting the hobby? has he grown tired of the collecting?
  10. I have a hard time believing that. I think it’s an ugly book and people are pickier. Look at the beautiful Tec 29 5.0 over in heritage it’s hard to go back to the plow after seeing the lights of Paree
  11. Hey Lou, thanks for digging up the video. Is that Darren Hey Lou, thanks for the link. No, I’d never seen it before. Do we know if Darren Adams is a boardie?
  12. Interesting. Before I was woke, I guess. Because they seem less available on the market nowadays, and maybe Cap 1 has taken its place. Seems like there’s always a Cap 1 available these days
  13. Right. The prices have been soft. But I remember well when a 7.0 Cap 1 went for $230k or $240k in a March 2019 CC auction. The momentum has slowed a bit of late
  14. @Chicago Boy this new info means last nights Clink sale was better than we first thought, comparatively. But it doesn’t change the fact that first Bat and first Supes are still way out in front of the firsts of other characters. An Action 1 or Tec 27 in 6.0 would go for 3 times what this MC 1 hammered for. an astute boardie recently likened MC 1 to FF1 in the sense that it started the Timely/Marvel ball rolling(for which it will be forever revered), but today the characters contained therein take a back seat to others introduced later. Interestingly (at least to me), at this exact point in time, I doubt a Cap 1 6.0 would have hammered as high as this MC 1.
  15. To me, it means the chasm between it and Action 1 and Tec 27 is larger than we knew hey @Chicago Boy, great minds think alike!
  16. Thanks, but you’ve set a high bar for the rest of us
