Ah but what is the meaning of that number 4, professor sir? Even better than yellow cover though? Deep purple covers like Captain Marvel 4!- 8 comments

First appearance of Naomi?
comicginger1789 replied to William-James88's topic in Modern Age Comic Books
I mean, I will never understand the whole previews having crazy value thing...but then again, I am not a die hard for anyone other than Spidey. So I get that once you have most everything else, seeking out previews makes sense. To me they are more a cool additional piece that I would want to acquire cheaply though....not pay hundreds or even thousands for. -
Please grade this True Love Pictorial #11!
comicginger1789 replied to Point Five's topic in Hey buddy, can you spare a grade?
I think 4.0 is high, this I am also in the 3.0-3.5 range. Staple rust and stains are unfortunate but still a killer book! -
Can’t hunt in person so I scour the backwoods of the inter webs and secured these two for a combined $485 which I think is pretty good given the current landscape! Super excited for the ASM 6!

Do I think comics will crash? No Do I think we will see a 5 year period where very few record sales of big books are made? Yes Do I think some long term spec books wk drop? Yes Do I think some major keys will plateau or drop for a period of time? Yes Do I think, if patient, collectors will find some good deals within the next 5 years? Yes Overall, comics will be fine. But there are some books that are selling in the $50-200 range currently that I would not be surprised to see fall down to the $20-100 range tops in the coming years. If you correctly predict which books these are, you will make smart sales now (and poor buys).

I have no problem with first appearances versus first full appearances. Lots of books fit that bill. Avengers 195 is first Taskmaster. He appears on last page. But by today’s standards, plain cover so little love. Plus in 196, he is on the cover looking great. ASM 298 but more so 299 show Venom last pages. Once again by today’s standard, ho him covers compared to 300. Hulk is one of the first and earliest example I can think of with a major character where they first appear in the final pages. And then next issue, a prominent cover. You have to understand that the love for that cover has driven the desire. Same as it once did for Conan 24 (although that had to change because she appears a TON in 23). I’m not saying the market will ever correct itself and I’m not saying the terminology (not a fan of the term cameo) is the best. But I think changing it is useless. I mean I don’t care for Wolverine at all but I go back to my example...suppose that Spidey debuted in the same fashion in AF 14 and that book had the cover it does. My desire to own that book would pale in comparison to AF 15 still.

Date Stamp (and Store Stamp) Love
comicginger1789 replied to comicginger1789's topic in Comics General
Very excited about this purchase for even MORE reasons now. First, it was a solid deal. Second, I love Moon Knight and to get his second appearance is great. And finally if you squint, I believe that date stamp reads June 12, my birth date!!!! Year is wrong but I don’t expect to find a 1989 stamp so this is the next best thing. Wish it was a tad more visible tho! The “N” has to be June. The “1” is visible and in person I can make out the faint “2” next to it -
All those places you listed are ripe for inflated prices. Plenty of social media venues where you can connect with people buying and selling at still very reasonable prices:) plus you’d be surprised what a couple posts saying you buy comics will bring in. Since the pandemic started, I’ve found four great collections. All with minimal advertising and a couple safely distances garage meet ups. It’s been great! (And no I’m not in a booming metropolis at all) In addition countless auctions on Facebook, Instagram and YouTube where prices are very very fair and with a tad of patience, great deals are found.

The Bronze & Copper Ages
comicginger1789 replied to MARVELous Fan's topic in Newbie Comic Collecting Questions
Who invented these ages anyways? Has that been researched? Like first time those terms were used? -
^ Great points It is why I hate collecting with a speculating focus. I tried that for a month randomly in 2019...and I hated it. It took the joy out of the hobby. If you pursue stuff you like, you will enjoy it. And if you want to speculate, don't pay attention to what the masses are doing. Look for stories that were great but no one is talking about right now (Wytches and Descender comes to mind) that can be found cheap. Focus on classic artists and great cover apperances of well known characters because, when people refuse to shell out however many thousands for a first appearance, they tend to go towards the best cover they can find with their fav character on it. Do these things and in addition to having a great collection, one will likely have one that has value and will be valued in the future.

Thank you! Now this sounds intriguing, especially being set in the past at some point and not the current MCU landscape. Also, moving forward with a character or two like Sersi and Dane is also a great idea. And if they can tell a compelling enough story, I am all for it. I just foresee it being a challenge, especially considering that to date, they are probably the least unknown characters Marvel has tried to use, especially in a big screen sense. I worry the story will be lacklustre and ho hum. I worry Angelina Jolie will be a bore. I worry that Gemma Chan will give a great performance but that it will not be enough to make this movie a success. Obviously I hope I am wrong, and that once seen, I will no longer have any doubts with anything they try to do moving forward.

While each of these points holds degrees of truth, they also hold degrees of lies The problem right now with the "first appearance" buying frenzy is that I could literally make a list of probably 200-300 characters that people say are "coming" or "going to appear". To me, saying that is like saying "hey, eventually if you look outside, you will see a double rainbow." It could happen tomorrow, it could happen in 20 years. If people think Marvel is somehow going to cram 200-300 new characters in the MCU in the relative (3-5 year) future, you are nuts. Reality? This superhero phase could phase out before we see half of them. Or it could be 15-30 YEARS before we see Mephisto....but hey, buy this book now for an inflated amount because "he is coming!

Yes, thanks for clarifying. My point was unclear... what I was meaning was that they are on another level, that of gods, and seemingly even more powerful than Thor. So perhaps a storyline where the Celestials select humans to evolve to battle the Deviants would still work. I just feel that, like Thor, they are characters that might have a hard time if put alongside other Marvel heroes. Thor, in his films, was primarily dealing with issues within his "realm" as it were. So perhaps that is needed for the Eternals to be successful...however they are (generally) based on Earth so any Earthly threat that comes about (on a large scale) you would have to think they would be involved. I also know that they will be the hardest to adapt and gain interest for general audiences (which, like it or not, is what a large portion of the viewing audience of MCU movies is). Guardians were unknown but easy to get people interested in because, visually, you had two weird green aliens, a talking raccoon and a tree. I mean, that piques interest in those who have no clue who the original GOTG are/were. Add in the humour and boom, success. Here, the key will be to make the Eternals interesting, otherwise I still have my reservations that this could (emphasis on could) be the worst MCU flick to date.

The Eternals is the first movie thus far in the MCU that I have skepticism about but am also the most intrigued by in a long time (kind of like how I was with Wandavision). Up until now, everything in the current MCU has been great, with the exception of a couple films and even they are still very watchable. My problem with the Eternals is the same problem the Eternals have as a comic book series. They are gods, and they really have no business being on the same level as superheroes yet Marvel tried to do so back in the 70's with Kirby's original series and what started as a solid story eventually fizzled. It is also why we have not had an Eternals comic series worth a read since. Now, I have heard people say "oh well they will do it differently, like with the Guardians of the Galaxy." How? You cannot make the Eternals wise-cracking outcasts...that would not work and would just be the same as doing another Guardians. I am very intrigued by this film and, while I have trust in what Fiege is doing, I would not be surprised if it flops. That being said, he and his team have shown time and time again they can make it work so therein lies the intrigue. How can you tell a compelling story within the MCU with these godlike characters? Will other MCU characters become involved? In many ways, it is almost a film that should be separate but we know everything ties together and that is where I am most interested to see how this is done without diminishing the characters' abilities. I think that, while this film could still have some great acting, it might flop as a story. Have we heard any rumblings about villains for this film? Is it presumed we get introduced to the deviants? And how will that connect with the assumed Secret Invasion storyline that seems to be coming about?

There are a handful of websites, apps, social media outlets that share (some free, some for a cost) info on new titles that are getting a lot of buzz, movie speculation and all that stuff. Now some stuff grows in value, some doesn't. It is hard to predict if a new series when it comes out will be a big deal. Generally, if people are talking about a comic series or run after the first couple issues, I would jump on board. A lot of independent series (thinking of Something Is Killing The Children at the moment) really took off and are now very expensive, and were even before a recent show announcement. Another one is Ice Cream Man. Now, perhaps these stories and characters have staying power, as shows/movies are developed around them but there is also a chance that they are hot for the time being and then lose steam. I would say the best investments (if choosing to make this the focus of the books you collect) are books that have always been desired, as these continue to grow and should in the future. Predicting what new series might do this is much more challenging to do, especially if you have not been following the market over the past decade+

PGM Amazing Fantasy 15
comicginger1789 replied to drmanhattanite's topic in Hey buddy, can you spare a grade?
Definitely not a 2.0. Highly unlikely it is a 1.8. 1.5 seems right due to how well it presents on the front. 1.0 seems harsh but possible. 0.5 would be just rude. Any way ya slice it, that’s a great book to have!
