  1. True, but maybe they also need more support staff, not just graders? Even if the time to grade remains the same, you can save a couple of weeks by just having more people to receive, package, and ship the ones that are graded. That's the part I don't really understand - if it took my company a week to receive something into our system after it had been sitting in our receiving dock heads would roll. And yeah, I think officially con season is March-October, so there's only 4 months outside of it. I absolutely will not defend things like those modern flips/sales, but if I have a book that I treasured that I wanted to keep for a long time I'd definitely consider slabbing it. Even if it's a 6.5 Spawn #1. And for those ebay sales, if they truly are losing money every time it'll only go on for so long. There's only so much money you can throw at a money-losing scheme until you run out. But I'll flip it around - why isn't it the people who send in 100 copies of the same book to sell later that are clogging up the process? I just want my mid-grade Spawn #1 for my shelf, but I have to wait because some dealer who doesn't even read books has 100 copies of ASM 300 thinking he can flip them for money? Doesn't seem right. There are plenty of reasons to send books into CGC, and I find it hard to say that there is a "right" way and a "wrong" way to do it. Mostly. 😊
  2. I get what you're saying, but I'm guessing those books are the minority. I think the issue is more that CGC isn't able to scale. The turnaround rates always go up once the con season is in full swing, but they've had these delays for many years now and they should be able to hire an appropriate level of staff.
  3. Not all of us slab our books to sell. Who determines what a "garbage" book is?
  4. That's what they do for the signature series. Seems like a no brainer to do it for these as well.
  5. I've yet to find anything that works the way I want it to. Right now I'm using a Numbers spreadsheet (similar to Excel, but I have multiple tables per sheet view), but it's getting a bit out of hand with the number of books I have. I've tried CLZ and wasn't happy with it. I feel like there should be a pretty easy answer, since it's really just a simple database. I just started trying Airtable, and it does 90% of what I want, but I can't get the look to be exactly what I'm going for. At this point I'm contemplating just making my own. I've got a background in Oracle databases and a bit of SQL, but I'll need to learn some PHP for the front end. I'm surprised there aren't more developer collectors that have already done something like this.
  6. Yeah I'm just not trying to spend an amount like the 1:500 virgin cover. I've bought a couple of his recent sets, and as long as these are in the same ballpark I'll be buying this one too.
  7. I'm really hoping that because this is the rarest it isn't crazy expensive. Also hoping that I can get a print of this at some point.
  8. I feel like this is pretty irresponsible on CGC's part. If they don't have the special labels in purple they should use the standard restored label and cancel the fee for the special label. Just listing the restoration notes on a blue label is going to lead to someone eventually getting scammed.
  9. I do like the Variant/Homage cover a lot better than the regular.
  10. Yeah the BBB can't do any of that. They're basically an entity that does third-party reviews of businesses. They're Yelp before Yelp.
  11. I don't know about the submission form, but you won't be able to leave with the book if you want a signature series label. They'll witness the book and take it from you there.
  12. Nice looking copy! I just sent one in for grading myself. It has some potential for a higher grade, but I'm not getting my hopes up. I'll be happy with a 9.4.
  13. Pretty easy drop off experience. I was there fairly early in the day and the wait was only 2 minutes or so. Got an email yesterday saying they had been received, and now they're scheduled for grading.
  14. Feel pretty good about my haul from AwesomeCon this weekend. Had a plan to get 129, and was able to get a copy for much less than I was planning on spending, so I picked up a few other keys while I was at it. Especially happy with the 101 because I think I can send it in for a press and bump it up at least 2 points.
  15. I ended up attending, but just for yesterday. Was able to pick up some nice books at pretty good prices. Comics were definitely in the minority, but there was still a nice selection and quite a few dealers. I enjoyed it quite a bit.
  16. One less round of shipping, so it saves on cost and potential for the package to be damaged. It's more "peace of mind" than anything else.
  17. So I've never submitted my own books to CGC before, but I just filled out the submission form to drop a bunch off at AwesomeCon this weekend. Now I have a question that doesn't appear to be answered on their website: am I just handing them a stack of comic books? Or do I need to put them in some sort of box for them to take as well? I plan on bringing them to the show in portfolios, so do I just take them out and hand them the stack?
  18. My only signature is 795 2nd printing signed by Dan Slott. Picked it up because it was the only issue over 500 that I was missing and the price was way too good to pass up.
  19. I'm leaning towards 9.4, but I think a 9.6 is possible.
  20. I think my biggest problem here is that it isn't my fault either. It's USPS's fault. But does that mean since the seller shipped media mail and not another method that it becomes his fault? Even though from his end it appears as though it was delivered without issue? I don't think there is an easy answer (which is one of the reasons why I reached out here for advice).
  21. Special in what way? Is it rare or valuable? No - it's worth about $5. But it could be special to you for other reasons. And it's impossible to grade with just a single low-res photo of the cover. You'd need to take more scans with detailed shots and post it in the grading forum.
  22. Just picked this one up from my LCS. I'm thinking a press would be very good for it, but there's a stain that runs through the book. It's not too bad, but it's there. Any thoughts on what this would grade at? And a guess at how high it could be with a press? Detailed shots under the spoiler tag.
  23. Well that was my other thought as well. When I look at it from my perspective, I paid for something that I never received. That should be grounds for a refund I would expect. But from the seller's perspective the item was shipped and marked as delivered, so they don't have any proof that something wrong happened. I really don't want to get into a spat over a couple of bucks, especially since I know he actually did ship the book and the USPS lost it, but I also feel like I shouldn't have to bear responsibility when I never received what I ordered.
