I got into a huge fight with the folks from Desert Wind over this. I paid them to get Herb Trimpe and Len Wein to do a Hulk 181 sketch, using a blank variant they supplied.  When I went to pick it up, there was a box of them. Some 9.8s, some 9.6s, some 9.4s.  He handed me a 9.4 ad explained the books had been individually assigned before the sketches were done and it was all the luck of the drawer.  Frankly, I didn't believe him and told him so. That was maybe 5 years ago and it still pisses me off.

I totally get what your saying

The point of a blank variant is for sketches...

That's why they're called "Blank Variant"...

Let's not gatekeep what collectors do with their own books.

    FTFY

We all know this....nobody is gatekeeping anything....people are simply discussing the value in Sketching something unrelated on a "Sketch Variant" as you call it (my bad I've never heard that term before) seems like painting a pitchfork on the Mona Lisa, it's just destructive to the comic imo.

Gotta have that 9.8 on the label :insane:

The grade on a blank cover book should be inconsequential.  2c

Is there any blank variants that are actually valuable in themselves?

And what is the point of a blank variant? I mean that is almost a :censored: to collectors. When showing off a collection is the blank variant the mantelpiece?

I'm sure a lot of people collect nice covers as much as nice 9.8 labels :insane: I know my ASM 50 would have never been purchased as a blank variant.

I guess it is a new canvas for artists to sketch, buuuuut it should be related to the contents inside

Sketching something unrelated is a double :censored: to collectors

we are talking about sketches on Blank cover variants, so it's all moderns anyways, and possibly completely unrelated books to the character being sketched on the cover.

If it's unrelated it's bogus, to me that is tantamount to Actors signing books( unless it's Chadwick Boseman signing FF 52:sorry:)

But yeah it's ridiculous if artists are sketching on blank variants something unrelated and the grade any less then 9.8 is as much impacted and problematic in resale as the unrelated sketch

My bad for my earlier post ( I make unrelated comments on threads accidentally)

Like, for instance, there are 2 cgc'd books with both with a sketch from Todd Mcfarlane of Spidey, same amount of detail on both. They are on blank sketch cover variants. One is a 9.0, the other a 9.8

Will anyone care at all about the grading on these books? Would this impact the price of the book?

I'd have to say it really depends on the age of the book. Like if it was Modern I'd think I would want a 9.8. I guess it also depends on the scarcity or overall value of the book, like for instance ASM 300...if Todd did a sketch on that then I'd be pretty happy with any grade above 8.0...if Ryan Stegman did a sketch on Venom 3 I'd want 9.8. I'd even go so far as to desire a 9.8 of UCX 266 if Andy Kubert did a sketch. But to each his own I guess....

I don't think it's possible to design any holder for a paper collectible like comics that's 100% safe

Nope...I agree, but it's gut wrenching to see something like that...they should provide you with the same book at the grade it was graded at

They did tell me to send it back and paid for the shipping.  And they did ask what they could do to make me happy so when push comes to shove they did offer to make it right.

It's really scary when you see stuff like that. I mean CGC needs to straighten that out, figure out a way to encapsulate the books better. I mean I've seen books be able to bounce back and forth inside the case, and you always wonder what damage can be caused

I'm 20yrs old and have been reading and collecting modern series since I was a kid. After listening to my friends endlessly talk stock and crypto currencies, I've decided I'd enter a side profit/flipping realm that I'd really enjoy and have an affinity for. So, I've recently begun collecting some relatively smaller keys (Avengers 8 & 57). I see a lot of big keys are blowing up right now and their FMV's are incredibly exceeding last year alone. So, my main question is, do I buy into an inflated MCU Spec market, or wait for a dip (that may never occur). I have comic knowledge but not so much market history knowledge or the volatility of it.

Disclaimer: No I do not expect to pay my way through life on the backs of books... Just for the fun of collecting the books then eventually selling for some profit.

    Thanks
