Classics Illustrated 11 - Don Quixote HRN 156 - 2.0/2.5 - Kunstler cover. 3/4” tear on front cover about 3” down from top open flap. Some type of liquid looking drops/staining on back cover. About 9 of them toward the top. 12 - Rip Van Winkle and the Headless Horseman HRN 118 - 2.0 - Top staple on centerfold held on by lower half of staple. Heavy 6” diagonal crease on right front cover. Accumulation of creases/dimples on front and back cover. Light to moderate moisture damage on front and back cover near the top around the spine. 21 - 3 Famous Mysteries HRN 114 - 2.0/2.5 - Accumulation of light creasing/dimples on cover front and back. Spine has wear to it, but both staples secure. 26 - Frankenstein HRN 117 - 2.0/2.5 - Accumulation of light creasing/dimples on front and back cover. Some small tears at bottom back cover. 32 - Lorna Doone HRN 118 - 1.8/2.0 - Matt Baker cover and art. Accumulation of color and non-color breaking creases front and back cover. Top left corner back cover almost torn off. 39 - Jane Eyre HRN 118 - 2.5 - Date stamp front cover. Accumulation of non-color and color breaking creases front and back cover. Back cover missing a small corner piece from both the top and bottom open flap. 40 - Mysteries (Poe) HRN 92 - 1.0 Heavy staining/browning front and back cover. Could also be some moisture damage. Reading crease and accumulation of mostly non-color breaking creases/dimples front and back cover. 44 - Mysteries of Paris HRN 78 - 2.0/2.5 Accumulation of mostly non-color breaking creases on front and back cover. Staining to back cover. 1/2” spine split lower spine. 52 - House of the Seven Gables HRN 89 - 1.8/2.0 - Centerfold popped at both staples. It’s still pretty snug in the comic so I didn’t want to pull on the pages to see if any other pages were loose. 69 - Around the World in 80 Days HRN 125 - 1.5/2.0 - Water damage/staining front and back cover upper left corner. Worse on back cover than front. 71 - The Man Who Laughs - HRN 71 - 1.5/2.0 - Cover detached at lower staple and barely hanging on top staple. Centerfold still secure. 74 - Mr. Midshipman Easy - HRN 75 - 3.0 - 15 cent sticker on front cover. Nicer lower grade book. 78 - Joan of Arc - HRN 113 - 1.5 - Quite a bit of wear to front and back covers. Rippling on front cover probably from water/moisture. Colors still decent on front cover. 84 - The Gold Bug and other stories - HRN 84 - 3.5/4.0 - Some stacking staining front and back cover. Order form filled out on back cover. Good stories, terrible artwork. 105 - From the Earth to the Moon - HRN 106 - 1.0/1.5 - Mostly due to water damage in upper left corner front and back cover. Spine wear and accumulation of other wear front and back cover. 124 - The War of the Worlds - HRN 125 - 1.5 - Centerfold popped at lower staple. Cover is probably barely hanging on at lower staple. Accumulation of general wear on front and back cover. 138 - A Journey to the Center of the Earth - HRN 136 - 3.5 - maybe better. There is an extra set of staples that look like manufacturing. There is one set on the cover and then a second set on the inside back cover equidistant that goes through to the centerfold. It does not look like someone added them. It looks like extra staples when printed. 142 - Abraham Lincoln - HRN 142 - 4.5 - Crunch top middle front cover. Some other general wear that brings grade down. Otherwise nice looking lower grade book. 145 - The Crisis - HRN 143 - 4.5 maybe slightly nicer. Nice Norman Saunders painted cover. Another nice looking lower/mid grade book. Some stress at top staple front cover and very slight tears. Still attached fine. 146 - With Fire and Sword - HRN 143 - 4.5 maybe slightly nicer. Non-color breaking bends front cover. Special Issue 141A - The Rough Rider - 5.5 - Color breaking corner bend lower right front cover. Reading crease along spine. Special Issue 147A - Crossing the Rockies - 3.0/3.5 - Quite a bit of rippling along spine due to being square bound I think. Some creasing on front cover that brings grade down. Looks decent in mylar. I think that covers it. Here's the books!

Nice books! I agree on the Avengers 57. If I didn't already have a nice CGC 6.0 copy, I'd be buying that one. One of my favorite Silver Age covers.

X-Men was by far the best comic title at that time imho. I couldn't wait for the next issue to come out. That is awesome!!

I thought getting introduced to comic books was the most exciting part of the story...

So, when I was young (mid 1970’s), my parents would meet other couples for…stuff. If the other couples had children, we would usually be put in one of the children’s rooms to play while they did… stuff. It was at one of these children’s homes that I had my first encounter with comic books. David and Christie’s dad had a comic book collection and the few times my parents visited, he would always go grab a box of comics for us to read. I had no idea what my parents were up to until a few years later. I still remember many of the comics I read at their house – Flash 138, Metal Men 15, Superboy 84, loads of Blackhawk comics, World’s Finest and many others. They were amazing! Everything about them, the artwork, the stories, the heroes and villains, all amazing. We didn’t have a much money though, so it wasn’t until a couple years later when I got a paper route that I could start buying comics. Also, around that same time, I met a kid a couple houses up the street from me named Randy who collected comic books. He introduced me to Rock Bottom Comics in Columbia, Missouri. The first comic I bought was X-Men. I think it was issue 108 (may have been 109 or 110), but almost immediately after I bought it I went back and bought every X-Men back issue I could afford with my paper route money. It wasn’t long before I had a full run of X-Men from 94 – whatever the current issue was. If I remember correctly, it took me about 6 months to put the run together. I had to start buying my own clothes after I got the paper route job, so I used what money I had left over for comic books. I also bought my first “old” comics around that time, a copy of Superboy 84 and a copy of Sub-Mariner 1 (silver age) which cost me $10. I loved that cover and still do. By the time I was a teenager (early 1980’s), I had full runs of X-Men, Micronauts, ROM, and New Teen Titans had just come out. I also had a nice run from 1 – 10 of my all-time favorite, Swamp Thing. When I was about to start 10th grade, my dad got a job in Kansas and we had to move. I kept my comics, but pretty much stopped collecting. There wasn’t anyone I met who collected comics and there weren’t any comic shops in the town we moved to. Eventually, I ended up selling my comic collection to Clint’s Comics in Kansas City. At that point in my life (1989), I was a single parent, working three part time jobs and trying to go to school (UMKC) and needed the money. I thought I could get around $200 for my collection (I was naïve and thought I could get about 50% of their value), but Clint offered me $50 and I took it. Fast forward to the year 2000 and my wife is looking for a Malibu Barbie on this new thing called Ebay. She found a seller who had one, and it was in really good shape, but it wasn’t still in the box. She wanted me to look at it to get my opinion and as we were scrolling through the seller’s items, I saw Superboy 84. “I had that when I was a kid!” In an instant, all those warm feelings about comic books came flooding back and before I knew it we were putting a bid on it. I ending up winning it for about $10. The flood gates were opened and now 23 years later I have about 40 short boxes of comics.

Here's a copy of my spreadsheet with grades and notes. When I posted issue 11 in the PGM forum, the average grade even with the rubbing/scuffing was around 6.5. I've got it in my spreadsheet as a 5.0 just to be as conservative as possible. Issue one may be nicer than than a 7.0, but again I want to be conservative on the grades. I just don't really have any experience grading these types of books.

Honestly, I'm not sure exactly how to grade these. I don't have any graded copies of books like this which to compare. The biggest issue is color loss/rub/scuffing on the back covers of several of these books. Because of this, I consider most of these nice reading copies, even though structurally they look like higher grade books. Issue 1 and 2 are both 2nd prints. Issue 2 and 15 are the nicest and are probably at least 8.5 or higher. The rest are probably somewhere between 5.0 and 7.0 depending on how you feel about the color loss/scuffing. I'm pretty much asking original cover price for the lot, plus what I think it will cost me to ship them. I am always open to reasonable offers. I'm asking $65 shipped for the lot. SOLD!! Thank you for the replies so far. The color rub/scuffing bothered me so much that I have it as a 4.0 in my spreadsheet. Maybe I need to rethink the grade a bit. The front cover is great. If the back looked like the front, I think it would be 8.5 maybe 9.0. Thanks again for the responses!

Just looking for opinions on a grade for books like this. Has significant amount of color loss/rub/scuffing on the back cover. How much should I deduct for an issue like this? The front cover is nice and looks high grade (VF/NM range) but back cover Thank you for any replies!

My brother-in-law is a huge Conan fan, so a couple years ago I bought him a complete, mostly unread (spines weren't even broken) run of the Lancer (late 60's) Frazetta cover Conan paperbacks. I thought it would be the best gift ever. When I got the books, they were so nice I wanted to keep them. They all looked almost brand new. But I wanted to give him something really cool. When we gave them to him, he did say thanks and called them "neat", but then promptly just tossed (literally) them on the floor in the corner of his office. Every time I've visited since, they are still just sitting in that corner with a bunch of paperwork and other junk.

Dang, I stepped away from the computer for 10 minutes and missed everything. Nice books. Dang it.
