  1. As a collector I'd much rather have the book on the right. The CGC notes state it has a detached cover and moderate spine splitting. Both of those issues can be fixed with leafcasting and you can end up with a book you can safely handle and read.
  2. I prefer the book on the right without question. You could crack the book on the right and have the spine repaired. Meanwhile there's no fix for a giant missing piece. I'm surprised CGC doesn't consider books with large missing cover chunks to be "incomplete." Meanwhile a non-story page coupon cutout in the book's interior will get hit with a Qualified label!
  3. $44,000 + 3% buyer's premium
  4. Big premium for the high-grade (CGC 7.5) copy of this book. (I won the cheaper book 2 days earlier)
  5. My copy has these issues inside: Teen-Age Romances 7 (Nov 1949) Teen-Age Romances 8 (Feb 1950) Teen-Age Diary Secrets 8 (Feb 1950) Adventures in Romance 1 (Nov 1949)
  6. I have a raw copy and I'll research which books are bound in it and report back. Coincidentally I also got my copy from MCS. Who would've thought MCS would be the top auction house for acquiring this ultra rare Baker!
  7. Yeah the hands are especially bad! At this point, what is the evidence in support of Baker's involvement? There appears to be none.
  8. Yeah 13 looks most like Baker. I can't believe 13 and 17 are credited to the same artist.
  9. Oh yeah I've read this many times!
  10. I looked at the edit history for PL17 at GCD (https://www.comics.org/issue/6644/history/) Looks like Matt Baker was entered in as the cover artist back when the entry was created in 2002. Though GCD existed pre-Internet so I can't nail down when the attribution to Baker was made and by who.
  11. I wanna hear the dissertation as this is my favorite can of worms to open up. It blows my mind that anyone thinks this is a Baker cover. It's the biggest mis-attribution in comics and I would love to know how Baker's name was attached to this cover in the first place. A hasty assumption because he drew some of the interior art? Or a way to prop up the book as folks began to collect Baker's work? (though this book hardly needs any more propping up since it's also an iconic and historically significant SOTI book).
  12. Glad to see the appreciation for Seth on these boards. He's one of the best storytellers out there and Clyde Fans is one of my favorite comics. I've shared this Seth quote about collecting before but will paste it here again. It really resonated with me. "Collectors are interesting because they seek out things that no one cares about and find out the vital information regarding those items. They catalogue and interview related creators, manufacturers etc. They preserve important cultural items. Later, when these things are considered interesting or important -- the academics come along and benefit from the work of these outsider collectors. But people don’t like collectors because they can be a strange lot -- greedy, secretive, rude, socially awkward, etc. I have met more than my share of collectors who I found personally hateful. I don’t really care for collectors myself. Though clearly I am one of them. People seem to collect for a variety of reasons. Some are accumulators (they just need lots of things), some are trying to get back their past (specifically childhood), some strongly need to possess things, etc. etc. I have all of these tendencies… but mostly I collect as a way of exploring the past. By buying the cultural items (especially books, movies and records) of the past you begin to get a deeper understanding of the times. There are so many surprises to be found. It’s a constant process -- there are so many layers of the past to dig through. But it is such a pleasurable experience. I just love the objects of the past and looking for them (and possessing them) brings me the most happiness in life. I like nothing better than looking through some dusty pile of magazines in an out of the way store… with the hope that something great is at the bottom of that unpromising pile. Like other collectors I am also trying to recapture the feelings of childhood. A lot of my life of drawing and making things is simply an attempt to recreate the feeling of being a child and doing those same things. I don’t collect a lot of things from the era of my childhood -- but occasionally I will seek out some item (or totem) from my childhood. Recently I tracked down a wrist-radio on eBay that I owned as a child. Holding it in my hands again was a beautiful moment."
  13. The cover credits (Alex Schomburg, Sol Brodsky) for Young Allies #14 and #15 are incorrectly swapped on CGC labels. This mistake could originate from Overstreet where it is incorrectly noted "Brodsky c-15" and "Schomburg c5-13, 16-19". 14 is unaccounted for and it is obvious that 14 is the one not drawn by Schomburg (look at how Bucky is drawn). Meanwhile, 15 has all the hallmarks of a Schomburg cover. Another possible source of the the mistake is in Gerber: Schomburg is credited for #6-#16 with the exception of #14 (which seems correct to me). However, the images for #14 and #15 are mistakenly switched. In summary, I'm requesting the following changes: Young Allies 14 Cover Artist changed to Sol Brodsky from Alex Schomburg Young Allies 15 Cover Artist changed to Alex Schomburg from Sol Brodsky I've submitted this change to GCD and it was approved. Below is an older thread that I started where this was discussed.
  14. The indexer on GCD wrote "The staring eyes of Wild Boy identify Baker."
  15. I think you sold me your VG undercopy back in Nov 2022!
  16. Looks like that corner crease was there all the way back in 2002: https://comics.ha.com/itm/golden-age-1938-1955-/humor/mad-8-gaines-file-pedigree-5-12-ec-1953-cgc-nm-92-white-pages-overstreet-2001-nm-94-value-650/a/12071-30498.s?ic16=ViewItem-Auction-Open-PreviousPricesHeritage-081514
  17. I think this is a blessing in disguise. I'm not against coverless books if want a reader copy or one day marrying the missing cover but these prices seem very high. I would advise patience and shelling out a little more for a well-presenting, low-grade but complete copy.
  18. Yes. GA comics are very scarce relative to SA. We won't ever know the exact number of surviving copies but as others have pointed out, you can take a multiple of the census count. For megakeys, you can use a lower multiple like 2x. For non-keys, you can use higher multiple. You can also get a sense of the scarcity of the book by seeing how often it comes up for sale at major auction houses.
  19. Copying and pasting a description from an eBay listing is wild! References to "auction," "Global Shipping Program," and "check my other listings" don't inspire confidence from buyers.
