  1. I saw the pic he posted on IG with the book! Meanwhile average customers like myself are still waiting on books from the November signature auction!
  2. The cartoonist Seth talked about collecting in a June 2004 interview and a lot of it resonated with me. "Collectors are interesting because they seek out things that no one cares about and find out the vital information regarding those items. They catalogue and interview related creators, manufacturers etc. They preserve important cultural items. Later, when these things are considered interesting or important -- the academics come along and benefit from the work of these outsider collectors. But people don’t like collectors because they can be a strange lot -- greedy, secretive, rude, socially awkward, etc. I have met more than my share of collectors who I found personally hateful. I don’t really care for collectors myself. Though clearly I am one of them. People seem to collect for a variety of reasons. Some are accumulators (they just need lots of things), some are trying to get back their past (specifically childhood), some strongly need to possess things, etc. etc. I have all of these tendencies… but mostly I collect as a way of exploring the past. By buying the cultural items (especially books, movies and records) of the past you begin to get a deeper understanding of the times. There are so many surprises to be found. It’s a constant process -- there are so many layers of the past to dig through. But it is such a pleasurable experience. I just love the objects of the past and looking for them (and possessing them) brings me the most happiness in life. I like nothing better than looking through some dusty pile of magazines in an out of the way store… with the hope that something great is at the bottom of that unpromising pile. Like other collectors I am also trying to recapture the feelings of childhood. A lot of my life of drawing and making things is simply an attempt to recreate the feeling of being a child and doing those same things. I don’t collect a lot of things from the era of my childhood -- but occasionally I will seek out some item (or totem) from my childhood. Recently I tracked down a wrist-radio on eBay that I owned as a child. Holding it in my hands again was a beautiful moment."
  3. Wow, thanks for the heads-up on this. I was bidding on this book as well. Best case scenario is that the grader meant "centerfold detached" and not "centerfold missing"...
  4. You can get up to a 1.5 for books with a completely split and detached spine.
  5. Oops no worries! I'll claim the Showcase 60 then! Thanks!
  6. I'll take Showcase 55, Showcase 57 and Terrifying Tales 14 if they are still available. Thanks!
  7. Are you... me??? I also sent a copy of this book to Phantom Restoration that had a completely split and detached cover! What are the odds?
  8. Yeah edging and cornering are terms that come from the card collecting hobby (for example, they comprise 2 out of the 4 components for cards graded by CGC). They also describe the books to be in "fair" condition which also has a very specific meaning in comics (i.e., pretty beat-up and one grade away from "Poor") but they seem to mean "VG" here. Indeed all the books I received were in the VG range, just a shame that the most valuable book in the lot had restoration that could have been easily detected if someone had opened the front cover. The spine split sealed to cover was pretty obvious. But it sounds like they are taking the feedback and I look forward to more transparent and better listings in the future.
  9. I received my items from the recent Goldin auction today. Disappointed to find out that the raw Famous Funnies 212 in this lot (https://goldin.co/item/1940-50-s-assorted-comic-book-collection-16-including-jackie-gleason-hd4t27) has glue up and down the spine holding it together. These are the sorts of things that should be disclosed in raw book listings.
  10. Wow I've never seen reds like that on the Jungle Comics! I always thought the logo was supposed to be orange! I'll take the Jungle 85, Jughead 25, and Archie 43 at 10% off!
  11. I've cracked hundreds of books to keep in my personal collection. I like to read them, and they take up way less space in mylars vs. slabs. The only book in my collection I haven't deslabbed is something with a pedigree label.
  12. Thanks for sharing this one. The source comic for Masterpiece and I Know How You Must Feel, Brad weren't listed on the Image Duplicator site I shared on my previous post.
  13. Grrrrrrrrrrr!! (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grrrrrrrrrrr!! & https://www.imageduplicator.com/main.php?decade=60&year=65&work_id=376 ) and Live Ammo (Take Cover!) (https://www.imageduplicator.com/main.php?decade=60&year=62&work_id=99) are taken from Our Fighting Forces #66. The closest thing to a "master list" that I know of is from this site: https://www.imageduplicator.com/main.php It's clunky to navigate but you can select a decade, then a year, and then a specific Lichtenstein work to see where the source panel came from.
  14. Pure speculation on my part but I would venture that the owner was not the original submitter. Likely an inexperienced but deep-pocketed new collector who picked up this grail and put it proudly on display. A few months of daily indirect sunlight can cause damage like this. Since IH181 is a grail for many collectors, it's a book that you see faded pretty often. I've attached another example below. The unaffected blue CGC label is not a dead giveaway. As I stated before, colors fade at different rates with reds/oranges being most susceptible. Blues and blacks aren't as affected. You can see this in action on the IH181 cover itself. The blues in Wolverine's costume aren't as affected compared to the red/orange background.
  15. I think without the stain it looks like a VG book. But with the large stains throughout the first half of the book, I think it's probably 3.0 at best.
  16. Unfortunately I don't think it gets a bump from a cleaning and press. The defects holding it back are the large color-breaking creases and obviously the torn corner. I think this is a 2.5.
  17. Ah thanks for sharing that resource. On eBay's "sold" search, I guess it just shows (inaccurately) what the list price was or what the current bid was before the best offer was accepted.
  18. This is 100% UV damage that happened after it was graded (CGC cases don't provide any protection against UV). Colors don't all fade at the same rates. Reds/oranges go first and purples turn blue which is exactly what you see here. The image is pulled from a sales listing, there is no reason for the seller to alter an image to make a book look worse when it is for sale.
  19. Yeah looks like it might be stacked on top of another book. So this is like a CGC 1.0? (The recent eBay listing said it was complete). For a "Fair" copy, at least the main image is all there!
  20. Here's a pic from the Sept 2021 sale which shows the book out of the bag.
  21. The eBay seller sent out an offer of 5K to the watchers and looks like someone may have accepted it (or made a counteroffer back) as the listing is now sold. If you search under sold listings for CL25, you can see that the same beat-up copy sold in Sept 2021 for $29.99. Not a bad flip!
  22. Looks like a solid VG (4.0) to me from the pics. If the water staining or moisture is more severe than the photos show, maybe the grade is lower. Dust shadows don't factor in at this grade range. Nice presentable copy!
  23. Cannot upvote this post enough! As collectors we need to get away from displaying our books on walls. There WILL be fading. I try to politely tell LCS owners to stop displaying wall books for long periods of time. I've seen an overpriced Avengers 1 and an IH 181 slowly lose their oranges and reds on the wall of a comic book store. I've seen books that have faded in a basement comic book store except for the small area that was covered up by a price sticker on the polybag.
  24. In Mad Men S2 E10 "The Inheritance" Betty Draper (January Jones) is seen reading Action Comics No. 203 which belongs to the weird neighbor kid Glenn.
