Frank Frazetta's Famous Funnies #209 - #216
10centcomics replied to lou_fine's topic in Golden Age Comic Books
Congrats! And yes I was bidding against you I picked up a 213 recently and that cleaned out the war chest so I had to tap out here. I've been tracking the prices on these Frazettas and they certainly are climbing! -
Sometimes I feel like we have to put down another type of collector to justify the legitimacy of the thing we collect. Let's be real, paying tens of thousands of dollars for any comic book, GA or modern variant, is pretty ridiculous in the grand scheme of things. As others have said above, let people collect what they want to collect. It's not hard to imagine that maybe it's a diehard Spidey fan, a diehard Dell'otto fan (maybe he likes Dell'otto the way we like Alex Schomburg or Matt Baker), a variant collector (a quick Google search tells me this is the top modern variant of the hobby), or a completionist looking to get every issue of ASM and its variants...

Wanted to get some 2nd opinions on what to do on a recent HA.com auction win that arrived. It appears the book's cover shifted during transit. When I talked with HA.com client services, they assured me that wasn't any additional damage done to the comic but doesn't dragging the cover down like that put pressure on other parts of the book? It also appears there is a tear near the base of the bottom staple that isn't on the original scan. The client services representative checked the grader notes for me and there is a note around tearing around the staples but nothing more specific than that. This isn't a valuable book so not a huge deal but wanted to get some opinions before I make a decision to return or keep the book. Let me know if you have any similar experiences. Thanks! Original HA.com Scan Arrival Pic (Top edge of cover shifted down and exposing the interior page underneath) Close-up of bottom staple (is there a new tear there at the base of the staple and extending up and to the right?)

ASM 15...Clean and press worthy?
10centcomics replied to comicginger1789's topic in Comic Book Grading and Restoration Issues
Yeah I'm surprised by the omission of the fading as well--to me that is the biggest flaw. It may have happened while the book was in the case. A press will help with the waviness from moisture damage but I don't see a huge grade bump due to the big flaws that can't be fixed from a press. -
A New Way (for me) of Collecting
10centcomics replied to Math Teacher's topic in Golden Age Comic Books
Great additional list of artists here. For LB Cole, his horror and sci-fi stuff definitely gets the most attention but you can hunt down some cool romance (True to Life Romances) or aviation covers (e.g. Contact Comics) that he did as well. For Frazetta, he's got the classic run on Famous Funnies (209-218) that fans love and command high prices. But you can get some other cool covers in other titles such as Weird Fantasy 21 (joint work with Al Williamson) or Buster Crabbe 5. For Kirby, you probably have him covered if you have lots of Silver Age comics but if you want some GA Kirby I like his covers for Adventure Comics with Sandman and Manhunter. Good luck with the project! -
The AA 61 has a Slight (A-1) designation meaning the quantity of restoration is very small and the methods/materials used are of professional quality. So pre-restoration, the AA 61 was likely still a mid to high grade book. Coupled with the fact that the fan-favorite classic cover is likely under-priced in most guides, the big premium over guide values doesn't really surprise me. On the other hand, the Action 7 has a Mod,/Ext. (B-4) designation, signifying a high amount of restoration work, coupled with the fact that the materials used were not top-grade ("B" vs "A"). It's likely this book was low-grade before the restoration work so it selling for a fraction of guide value makes sense to me! But we can both agree the promo videos are a little much

PGM Fantastic Four #72
10centcomics replied to Bludriver's topic in Hey buddy, can you spare a grade?
Great looking copy. I think it's in the FN range. -
PGM very low grade ASM #1
10centcomics replied to Motor City Rob's topic in Hey buddy, can you spare a grade?
Definitely a 0.5 and unfortunately I would say less desirable than a remaindered copy since you're missing a lot of the key art but hey at least Spidey is mostly there! -
Yeah water damage across the entire book keeps this squarely in the GD range. A press would actually help this book a lot. Maybe a professional could help with the sticker residue as well.
-
Yeah I see this more in the 3.0ish range too due to the large stain combined with the very long color breaking crease on the cover. A press can get rid of the waviness from water damage but the staining/discoloration will remain so I don't think you will get any grade bump from it.

Looks like in the FN range to me!

TOS 39 - Graded Coverless - Opinions?
10centcomics replied to AGGIEZ's topic in Comic Book Grading and Restoration Issues
If I were buying this I would also prefer the original cover as well. Main image of Iron Man is still intact, should appeal to lots of folks looking for a reader or more affordable copy! -
