  1. I know for some obvious flaws (like staining, missing pieces, tears) a press won't do much to the grade. But for high grade books (meaning books that would fall under a NM- or better grade), do most of you press them before/during a submission? Or do you sometimes not think it's worthwhile?

Just wondering because I have some nice key books but never thought of pressing until I found this board.

I was thinking recently as to what would fall in the category of the most affordable key book. A true key book: first appearances, early appearances, origin stories, iconic cover art, classic stories etc. Personally I'm a bit unsure ~

    The most affordable Gold key:

About golden age, here are some affordable keys. And if you don't care about these key issues, then that's the reason they are still affordable

    Captain Marvel Adventures 79

    Captain Marvel Adventures 125

Captain Marvel Adventures 26 (picking up big time lately)

For silver age, I find Showcase 37 to be rather affordable

Now for modern, well I went on a shopping spree to a local comic book warehouse yesterday to see all the books being discussed above and bought the following for these prices (some are higher than e-bay but I can see them in hand and can buy it all at once without having to have 10 different shipped orders). All of these are at least standard near mint / off the rack grade.

Sword of Azrael, complete set for $15

    Alpha flight 33 $6

    Alpha Flight 51 $7

    Batman 436 $3

    Detective Comics 586 $3

    Daredevil 197 $3

    Transformers 53 $3

    Uncanny X-Men 221 $11

    Uncanny X-Men 244 (newstand) $22

    Uncanny X-Men 282 $3

    Uncanny X-Men 316 $3

    New X-Men 117 $3

    New X-Men 118 $3

    New X-Men 129 $8

    New X-Men 133 $3

    New X-Men 134 $3

    New X-Men 135 $3

    New X-Men 144 $3

    New Mutants 16 $8

    Mighty Thor 337 $75

    Batman LOTDK 120 $8

    Batman 655 $15

    X-Factor 5 $3

    X-Factor 24 $8

    Amazing Spider-man Annual 16 (Canadian edition) $15

I think the OP said SA key.. so unless we have a time machine to go back and make more SA books I dont think supply growing is a thing as there is a finite amount of SA books out there...

From what I read on these boards, there are a lot more raw SA keys than there are slabbed SA keys. Take Amazing spider-man 13 for instance. Last year was the biggest year ever for that book, so the prices slabbed comics sold for on e-bay got others wanting to get theirs slabbed. So now the market got more slabbed Amazing Spider-man 13s than it ever did. I think that's what was meant by supply outgrowing demand.

And the book I picked is just an example, don't know if the prices for slabbed copies of that book actually went down.

I don't understand interiors being described as 'white' - no silver age newsprint comic ever had white pages even when it was on the printing press.

They aren't super common, but some books have remained fresh. I have some silver age books with really nice white pages and I even have some golden age books with white pages. It's really stunning to look inside, the colours look so bright.

Hypothetical.  A married book where you can't tell it's been done except the staples on the new wrap were in a slightly different position so the 4 old staple holes are present.

How many grades would that drop the book..?

The bigger issue here is that I fear the book might no longer get the universal blue label. So the grade might not change much but the book's value can be cut in half or more.

Also, CGC will be able to tell what's been done and they are more likely to make the mistake of saying an untouched book has been touched then missing it.

I have no regrets about any book I submitted.

But, I do regret buying a book in a slab that I have not read (and won't unless I pick up a reader because its not been re-printed).

Same. For some reason, I feel so much more distant to those books than the others I have even though they are equally as nice (if not nicer) and as crucial to my collection.

Anyone who tells you that third party grading as a concept is bad and not to be trusted...? That person is lying to you

I can attest. One of my worst transactions was on e-bay, years ago, where a seller had a decent looking Batman #20 and he stated that he only sold raw because he did not trust slabs, so the point that he would crack all the slabbed books he bought.

Well turns out that book had a sealed tear. Undisclosed of course. I was able to return it, but the seller never admitted to their mistake. I wonder how many people he scammed with this notion.

Eraser marks? Never heard that one before. Maybe this indicates the comic has already been pressed and cleaned(shrug)

Yes, unless the person who posted is the original owner of the comic, I would think that the eraser marks are an outcome of some cleaning.
Also, to the original poster, those will not come out with a press, so you will probably end up with the exact same grade.

Not at the current time, certainly.  In the late 70's through early/mid 80's, when I first started collecting, he was one of Marvel's most popular characters.  Even in the late '80's when I had my store I would have gladly traded you Fantastic Four/Hulk/Iron Man/Thor comics straight up for Miller Daredevils as that was what collectors were buying.  Well that and Claremont/Byrne X-Men.  I have no doubt his day will come again.  That said the main thing keeping DD #1 down is that, with it's '64 cover date more copies have survived and in high grade as well.  But the fact that his first appearance is much less valuable than X-Men 1 and especially Avengers 1 is a travesty.

What is super cool about Daredevil 1, and why I can definitely see the potential, is that in 1 comic you have a popular character's first appearance, him on the cover and the first issue of his own series. For other characters, that can be 2-3 different keys (wolverine, for instance).

I think all he needs is to be part of the cinematic MCU and on the big screen in a good movie for the comic's value to achieve new heights.

That's like saying The Incredible Hulk #181 isn't a key issue, as it's just another comic featuring Wolverine ~

That is not the same at all. And I was explicit in saying this was a personal opinion. You wanted to know why it was cheap and I helped.

Now you just want to argue about it and I won't be playing. So please, back off.

Fantastic Four 19 - just wait till rama tut/kang appears in a movie.  Then you'll see.  also FF annual #6-just wait til franklin richards or annihilus appear in a movie.

I was always curious about this. Do retcons also work with keys? Because Kang's first appearance is Avengers 8. Later they wrote that he used to be Rama Tut. But Rama Tut wasn't Kang originally, it's nowhere in the story, he's just another random villain.  CGC themselves, do not mention Kang on their slab notes either.

First of all... scooby 1 is not "undervalued". Nor are Star Trek 1 or Star Wars 1. They're valued proportionally as NON comic book properties. They are movie franchises.

Just like Rick & Morty is not undervalued and many many other NON comic related franchises.

TMNT "IS" a comic book property.

    Just like Spider man is.

Where would you see Transformers fitting in all this? Their comic appeared before anything else related to the franchise.

That's my point.  There were always some sellers in the past that have asked ridiculous prices and it was easy to avoid them.....but over the last several years, most sellers have decided to do it to the point that I've essentially stopped collecting.

For keys, yeah, but there are people out there like Harley Yee at conventions and northerngiant on ebay that I can count on for decently priced books. They have kept me collecting. Plus, if you go through auctions then technically you are buying at market value.
