  1. I just acquired Captain Marvel Adventures 77 and as of right now there are only 9 graded by CGC and one of those is restored. Sadly, the centrefold is detached, something the seller (heritage auctions) did not disclose, bringing down the stated grade of 5.0 to a 2.0. So I will probably send it back, but for now I own it so I will post it while I have it. Was wondering something though, are these comics actually rare? Because the few graded when it comes to any comic posted here are usually the higher grade ones that make grading worthwhile. Like even if this was a 5.0, grading it would cost about half of what it's worth. If these books would be truly rarer than other golden age books, wouldn't their prices reflect that? Then again this is one of the only issues below 100 of Captain Marvel Adventures to have less than 10 on the census, so it might be rarer after all if all things remain equal.

  2. The person who sold it to me only had scans of the front and sold it as a 7.5. I thought that was fine. But now that I have it in hand and see that missing piece in the back, added to the staple tear for the upper staple, I really doubt that grade. So I wanted to know what you guys thought. Also, the comic does not have a spine roll, the printed part of the cover is simply not aligned.

Here's an example of a 9.4 with bindery chip. No longer in my collection.

Thanks! Though I still find it odd that your fiction house comic would get a 9.4 while the Captain marvel book above gets a 9.6 since it seems to have twice as many bindery defects as yours. These slight grade bumps can spell for a huge change in worth, especially for these golden age books.
Also, how does one know if something is a bindery defect rather than wear? I have one book where the only defect is something at the top left edge, will scan it later and post it.

    Thanks for all the responses.

  4. I came across this while looking at the worth of some of my books and grading Golden Age can be tough at times since there can be no wear and tear but still imperfections from the initial printing process.

Regardless, I have a tough time believing that the comic below with not one but 2 messed up corners + writing on the comic would get a 9.6. Is this because the comic got over graded due to it being a Mile High copy? Or is this an actual legit grade and if I send a comic in with the same imperfections I too would get a 9.6? Because so far with what I sent, it wasn't the case, hence why I am looking for more opinions and insights.

I'm more interested in what led you to asking such a vague general question here to a bunch of random internet strangers instead of doing the barest modicum of research on the internet to find out the basics for yourself.

But isn't this the newbie thread? Where else would one ask questions like such?

WJ - no one around here thinks of VG in terms of market value . . . :gossip:

I will admit, I am rather out of my element here, Donnie, like a fish out of water.

That's the "appearance" from Superboy #0?  That's not even a full fledged cameo.  That's a "cameo in shadows" for sure.

It's more than what we see of Killer Croc in Detective 523 and yet that book is way hotter than Detective 524, Croc's first full appearance. I am curious to see if there will be a switch in e-bay prices between Superboy 0 and 9 once the suicide squad movie comes out.

This is the best "first appearance" by a boardie I have seen in a while - WTTB!!!

That is most kind of you, thank you.

  7. Sorry if this is not posted in the right place, let me know if that's not the case. I was looking for the first appearance of King Shark and was told it was both Superboy 0 and Superboy 9. Many ebay listings pair them together. Superboy 9 is seen as the more valuable of the two with Superboy 0 just being an extra and when both are slabbed by CGC, there is no mention of King Shark on the Superboy 0 slab. So does his cameo in Superboy 0 not count as his first appearance?

I find it often hard to assess what counts and doesnt count. The first Darkseid is said to be in Jimmy Olsen but we only see a very small bit of him while we see him fully as we know him in Forever People 1, yet no one cares about the Forever People 1 comic (as can be seen from market prices). Killer Croc's first appearance is said to be in Detective 523 and yet we only see him under a coat with his whole face and body obscured in a panel or two. And yet that's the pricy books, while venom has a similar cameo in Amazin Spider-man 299 but 300 is his pricey first appearance. I just dont get how that particular market works. Do you guys own both the cameo and first full appearance to be sure?

And why doesnt CGC mark anything on the Superboy 0 comic slab?
