  1. Dave was very patient and thoughtful with a lot of ASM's I bought for my 10-yr-old son, who's just getting into comics. Thanks so much, he loves them!
  2. I was browsing a dealer's comics at the AZ Toy Con this weekend, and found one that wasn't priced. I asked him how much, and he looked at the cover price and said "$5.99, but I'll take $5." Score!
  3. Just returning to the hobby after selling it all off about 10 years ago, when my son was born. Well now he's 10 (obviously), and is really into Spiderman recently. He's always been raised in a pro-comic household and loves anything Batman, but this last Spiderman movie got him interested in comics, so who am I to argue? I've been buying up low-mid grade BA Spideys for him, but putting them in a virtual "chore store" that he can earn chore bucks to pay for. It's actually working! Not surprisingly, I want to get some of the books I used to own, mainly my avatar: Batman #27. Mine was a CGC 9.2. I also had some Batman silver/bronze age keys like 155, 171, 200, 227 (one of my faves!), 232, 234. But they cost SO much more now. Guess that's true for every comic. (And so much more than just 18 months ago, not just compared to when I got out in 2012.) I'm also considering: Neal Adams Batman/Detective covers JSA appearances in the silver age Low grade GA 'Tec (even cover-only) Having fun figuring out which direction I want to collect this go around, as I can't afford it all. And I hope I don't sell, if I get burnt out again. Learned that lesson.
  4. Funny, I just discovered them yesterday and really enjoy their content. It's like listening to comic collectors like us just talking about their love for the hobby. I saw this thread and popped in to see if anyone mentioned them.
  5. "Still" collects DC? Are we to stop collecting comics we love because speculators have driven the price of Marvel comics through the roof? I didn't get the memo that I was supposed to switch publishers. It would make more sense if it said "Who still invests in DC comics?" That I get. Not all of us collect comics to get rich.
  6. 50's for sure. Fighting rainbow monsters and dinosaurs. Too corny.
  7. Thanks guys, very helpful. That's about what I figured. Just wanted to make sure I wasn't missing any tips. I've been selling on eBay for over 25 years, so I consider myself pretty knowledgeable on reselling. I've bought vintage toy collections before, just not comics. Appreciate it.
  8. Obviously. That would be ridiculous. I understand that just coming back to the hobby after several years, I have some re-educating to do. Not looking to drop $50,000 this weekend. Was looking for advice on how others calculate value by browsing a lot or collection. Is each book added up in your head, or are you figuring an avg per book for the whole lot.
  9. Well it's not that I'm a newb to comics. I just need to familiarize myself with today's prices. I know what the keys are and how to grade. Just wouldn't have guessed a Hulk 181 in 4.0 selling for $3000 would be considered a steal.
  10. I knew that was coming. But there is no way buyers know the price of every issue, of every title, in every grade. Also, I'm curious if you calculate the price of each book in a collection of 1000, or make an educated estimate?
  11. I've always been a collector and love to sell to self-fund my hobby. Getting back in the hobby after a long hiatus. The first thing I noticed since returning is that my pricing knowledge can be thrown out the window, after what's happened to the market recently. My question is when buying collections, if you haven't memorized the price of each book in each grade of the collection, how do you determine a fair price? Do you look up some of the books on your phone? Bring a guide for reference? Take a best guess?
  12. I assume those of us looking to acquire new books are hoping this will result in a correction in GA prices, and those who own valuable books are suspecting prices won't see a correction.
  13. Picked up a copy of Batman Golden Age Omnibus #6 last week for a pretty penny, and saw a #7 was listed at auction on eBay. I watched it, fully expecting to win it. Paid $265 for the #6, and figured I'd have to pay more for the #7. As the auction was ending, I was putting in my snipe, and set it at $550, assuming I'd win it somewhere around $350-$400, but wanted to make sure I got it. Well, when the bidding went up to $495, the reality set in that I was going to pay $500+ for this book. And I started to think what comic I could get for $500 instead, so I cancelled my snipe. It ended at that $495 bid. Guess I'll have a hole in my set for now...
  14. I'm back! I doubt anyone remembers me, but I joined in the forum in 2003 and was pretty active on the boards through 2006. I attended a CGC dinner at Comic-con one year. Haven't posted here since 2013, as life and family took priority over comics. But my son is 10 now, and although he's been a superhero fan his whole life, he's just now getting into comics. It's something I can do with him, so I figured I'd rejoin the forum. Looks like I picked the wrong time to get back into comics, as prices have skyrocketed the last year. Geesh!
  15. I go most Saturdays (I look for a variety of items for my eBay store) and never find any decent comics. I woke up extra early today, to go to a sale advertised in Craigslist with "Marvel & DC comics, many 12¢" and "old Batman items". And if you mention the ad, you get half off everything! I got there 30 min before he started, and was the first person there. He had 8 junk comics from the 90's, and one 12 center, a Dell Beverly Hillbillies in VG priced at $80, so I could have gotten it for $40. And his "old Batman items" were opened Corgi Batmobiles from the 50's & 60's, made in the 2000's.
