  1. This thread, along with Shiverbones Cover recreation thread, are my faves on the CGC Chat Boards.
  2. I am intrigued by this method and have thought of applying it to manydifferent authors in the past. The main two being Faulkner and Vonnegut. I have begun with Vonnegut by recently completing Player Piano
  3. Here is what I am reading now The Complete Stories of Phillip K Dick vol 1 King of the Elves (Subterranean Press) I finished The Amber Spyglass by Phillip Pullman on the plane back from Sundance. I enjoyed His Dark Materials trilogy as an adventure story but did not feel that his philosophy was greatly supported both by the characters or his own definition in the story of why there is no god. It felt thrown in there to make a point. I am intrigued in reading a critical analysis of religion or anti religion in Pullman and will probably seek one out. Also I am drawn to read more CS Lewis to examine his Christian Allegory and compare it with Pullman in the other camp. I dont particularly seek religious philosophy in my rollicking adventure stories but am ok with it if it is seamlessly integrated. After I finished the Amber Spyglass I went to my backup book, a paperback copy of Deadeye Dick by Kurt Vonnegut
  4. I reada the ASoIaF like some 'moka de crack. That being said, I have held off on the Dance with Dragons until it gets closer to the date for the launch of season 2 on HBO. also, like Penelope Cruz says to Tom Cruise in Vanilla Sky... I am a "pleasure delayer"
  5. My wife will place a phone call to Kentucky. She'll also need to keep TupennyConan alive some way. My wife also has expilicit intructions to make you and Neil fight over my REH collection. **Notes: need to ply Jeff with liquor at earliest opportunity**
  6. Good news on the Dark Tower adaptation. HBO has picked up the TV part of the series. http://io9.com/5853475/stephen-kings-dark-tower-is-coming-to-hbo It is being developed by Ron Howard and was set to go at Universal but the project was killed when Comcast bought universal and the new suits came in. They didnt want to spend that big a budget on a genre film. They also torpedoed Guillermo del Toro's planned adaptation of Lovecraft's At the Mountains of Madness Comcast needs to go fork themselves with a baseball bat. I am boycotting spending any money on Universal films as a result. The Dark Tower will eventually get off the ground somewhere with at least one feature being produced then then HBO picking up the tv series where the film left off. Originally there was planned to be three feature films and tv series in between linking them together. HBO has certainly shown their capacity to do a big budget multi faceted fantasy story with the A Game of Thrones adaptation, though
  7. Dark Tower is my favorite series of all time. Dont forge't The Talisman and Black House and Hearts in Atlantis, as King weaves all the stories together. Also, The Wind through the Keyhole, the first Dark Tower book in 8 years is dropping in February. Call it Dark Tower 4.5 It chronicles the events that take place between Wizard & Glass and Wolves of the Calla
  8. I've read neither. I've been a poor Dickens reader. I've been thinking about him forever. Recently something John Ruskin wrote got me thinking about Hard Times. I'm envious of your book choice. I say read all of his books in chronological order by publication date. I doubt you'll regret a page of it & your bookshelf will thank you for it the rest of your days. +1 I have a degree in English Lit and have never read a Dickens book cover to cover. It's sad and dumb on my part. I just can't get off George R.R. Martin right now. Some classics maybe in a couple of months. to both of ye.
  9. Flaubert's 1862 novel was the most violent & sadistic fiction I've ever read. More than Blood Meridian or American Psycho. Or any film. Got Blood Meridian on my read pile and hope to start it soon. It was hard to find an affordable copy. Good luck finding a 1st/1st. They go for mucho coin. I ended up buying the Modern Library HC.
  10. +1 This is all over my head . I like the best presenting book that I can easily afford and read. $4K books... Sheesh-kebab!
  11. Why would someone destroy a books Pedigree provenance? I do not understand. Isn't the book worth more as a Pedigree?
  12. perhaps he should change his Location to "in front of closed door"
  13. Welcome to the boards Xaltotun! Great to have another Howard aficionado in our midst! Cant wait to see more of your collection.
  14. Have you ever tried to read "The Naked Lunch"? Folks shouldn't bother. eat some drugs... I did my share (and your share too), and I still couldn't get into it. Perhaps you would find Finnegan's Wake more palatable...
  15. Have you ever tried to read "The Naked Lunch"? Folks shouldn't bother. eat some drugs...
  16. I expect that to begin late January. and when you do, you will probably read em all in a row in a short period of time, like I did!
  17. I've spent so much time in the Polk County groves over the past few years that I've gone all cracker! I started thinking about rereading this a few years ago & now has come the time! Did you do okay with your signing? Yup, It was kind of a madhouse, but I got the sig. Didn't get much face time as he was signing assembly line style and not really greeting or talking to folks. Got some decent pics though!
  18. I also read the Yearling at a young age. I can remember i had a Hardcover copy of it that was pretty old, and it being vintage I attributed it intrinsic value. Perhaps the seed of collecting old stories was implanted in me at a very young age. Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings was an interesting writer. I need to read more of her works including the short stories. Here wiki is interesting (the bit about her libel suit in particular.) I was unaware she taught Creative Writing at UF, and also was friends with Zora Neal Hurston (even though she made her sleep in the servants quarters with her black maid when she came to visit) I love Florida writers!
  19. (thumbs u Enjoy! I remember I first read that book around 9 years old!
