Copper's Heating/Selling Well on Ebay
1Cool replied to fastballspecial's topic in Copper Age Comic Books
No way - I can't let this once great thread slip to the 2nd page. I can't think of anything even close to hot in the copper age books but nobody puts baby in the corner! -

Greggy missed this show and he doesn't miss many big shows. Take that what you will. -
Are prices still climbing or have they eased up a bit???

That would have been smart but I saw way too many people who got into collectible flipping just because it was “hot”. It was an easy way to avoid harder labor and for a time it was an easy way to make $100 in $300 really easy. Unfortunately those days may be over for awhile and plenty of people got caught holding the hot potato. The huge spike in prices came from new money into the hobby but I don’t think they stuck around long. -

At least a portion of the money went to the people who sold during the spike. Another bunch of the free cash went to help people basically work part time and avoid low paying jobs due to their savings. Those savings appear to have been depleted and I’m see more and more of the part time workers going back to the work force. Wage increases seem to be plateauing due to this. -

I think they both the same. You gave people a ton of money that they may not have needed to survive. They used said funds to drive up collectibles and other items in the hopes of generating more cash or just because they always wanted it. Prices crash so they lose all the free cash and the older people who originally owned the collectibles are the ones who benefited. -

I’m glad Bob had a better show than Baltimore but people typically want to talk about shows they enjoyed. They want to show off books they got (especially for cheap). People want to talk about board members they saw or hung out with. What food was good around the show. Silence is telling in terms of a big show. The boards in general are very slow so maybe it’s not as big an indicator as it use to be. -

It went into the Boomers pockets. They had all the cool books initially that went up 3x and they sold to the flippers during the spike. They had the boxes of old sports cards that went for a mint during the unpacking craze. They had the houses that doubled in a few years. The free cash was giving to the young and poor and got sucked right into the Boomers accounts. -

Which is fine but I'd think they would go the way of other shows and call it a fan expo or entertainment expo rather than a comic con. I see a lot of people talking about the limited exclusives so that must have been where all the money was flooding towards. Sad to hear another huge Con is basically making itself a non physical comic book show. -

Lack of photos and reviews doesn't bode well for this Con. -
Owen Wilson does make a fetching assistant!

I saw it yesterday with my wife and we both were like "what the heck did we just watch" at the end. Maybe I'm just getting older but the plots just keep getting more and more twisted and strange lately. It was a fine first episode but it needs to get much better.

Seems like an outlier since there is a CGC 7.0 on E-bay (a MCS book) that is listed for $4550. Weird things happen in pretty much every auction especially when the books are decently rare. I'd not put much stock in it other than congratulating the seller. -

Are prices still climbing or have they eased up a bit???

Good point - I originally misread this info and thought it was the top 100 desired books and he kept track of the GPA prices for those books but it does say he is grabbing the most sold books which will probably grab a couple low grade mega key books like X-Men 1 since they do come up often and wouldn't cost an arm and a leg. But in general the trend for the top 100 selling books for the different eras is very evident but it doesn't include every possible book for sure. But as long as he uses the same procedure to get data then it's a very good snap shot of what has been going on for the last decade or so. I do think his statement that the Silver Age have come back to the projected values while the Bronze / Copper books are lower than would be projected is a good litmus test of the analyses. Those that track books can see this to be true pretty much across the board where the newer the book the harder the correction as been (to the point they could be seen as a deal based on past prices especially when you consider inflation). -

Very detailed review of the current market. Thanks for posting it. I’d be shocked if his charts don’t continue to correct at least to the 2019 levels which would basically erase any profits for a 4 year period. A healthy correction especially for the collectors who are buying. -

Now that is kind of stupid in my book. Unless there was some extreme slab shaking going on a CGC 9.4 shouldn't get a 7.5 from anyone. I know - I know . . it all work out in the end since people just expect the books to be under graded but that level of difference is just confusing to everyone involved. They can grade how ever they please but it just seems dumb to be that strict that 9.4 books are being graded 7.5 / 8.0 (not once but over and over again). -

My bad - he did say he has 30 years in the industry so he is old - which should have given him a bit of patience by now. -
My expectations were pretty low and it looks like I had them way too high. There was a couple other cons in the area yesterday so there is evidence of buyer fatigue. No surge of buyers at the opening and a lot of dealers looking at each other. I talked to the promoter and there has been a big drop in booth demand in Cleveland which caused an influx in dealers from Michigan. I grabbed some high grade X-Men Byrne issues so happy so far with my purchases.

This explanation seems more plausible then a $20K mega key book going for $11K even on E-Bay during a downturn. I tend to side with the seller in these cases just because things do happen on E-Bay occasionally which will hurt the seller way more than the lost opportunity for the buyer.
