  1. Hey guys, I know this isn't the WTB section but I don't get much action there, so I thought I'd try where the Turtle fans are directly. Please delete if not allowed.

    I'm looking for TMNT Vol.1 issues, #11, #13, #16, #28 and #62 in 9.8.

I know, I know, they're some of the hardest issues to get. But I thought I'd try my luck here.

And I'm jealous of all the OA you guys have too. 😭😃🐢

I say it goes for at least 50k. I wish it was a little bit more centered though. LOL.

    Edit:

I didn't click the link so I didn't realize it's already at 53k with 8 days left.  Jesus.

GPA shows a bunch of February sales for FF #48:

    • 9.6 - $26,500
    • 9.4 - $13,750
    • 9.2 - $8,899
    • 9.0 - $8,100

Then there is a 9.2 sale in April for $19,200 which you have to decide whether to treat as an outlier or not.  It's more than double the 9.2 sales recorded in GPA for both February and March.  I'm not aware of the $21K sale you're describing.

In addition to GPA I will sometimes just look at asking prices on eBay.  In this market, I think it's fair to say that comics pricing on eBay has become more and more like sports card pricing.  People put up ludicrous asking prices that they don't really expect to get.  So for example right now there are several CGC 8.0 copies with asking prices ranging from $9,400 to $13,000.  There is also a 9.0 with an asking price of $21,000.

So ... my first thought based on GPA alone (which in this market especially is not giving you a full picture) was that you could ask for $12,500 for your 9.0 and see if someone wants it badly enough (keeping in mind that a CBCS book will not fetch a CGC price).  I was originally going to say that at $12,500 I would be confident you're not underpricing the book, which would allow you to gather some data when offers below your ask come in.  It can be very educational to see how a potential buyer (if they are sufficiently thoughtful and transparent) arrived at an offer price.

Now I'm thinking you might want to ask for a bit more -- in this market it's possible someone would pay $14,000 or even $15,000.

I can't give you more specific advice without knowing how motivated you are to sell and where you plan on selling (i.e. through eBay, or on the forum, etc.).  I recommend searching every dealer web site to see how many data points you can collect on asking prices, and I recommend you do sold item searches on both eBay and Heritage to get a clearer picture.  Then take one of two approaches:

    • Price your CBCS 9.0 where you think a CGC 9.0 ought to be, and make sure it's clear you will entertain offers.  Be patient and see what you learn.
    • Price your CBCS 9.0 more like a CGC 8.0 or 8.5, making it the most attractive buy available, and you will probably sell it quite quickly.

Hope that helps.  Insert legal disclaimer about following the advice of a stranger on the internet.

This is what I came here for! Thank you Lou. Awesome and simple breakdown. I really appreciate your insight. I'm not trying to sell it, just get a market evaluation of worth for a trade. I want to possibly trade for a TMNT #1.

that company's grades on books dont always equate to the same grade with our cgc overlords. depending on what it looks like, it may be more of an 8.5 book value-wise.

I'm not trying to see what grade it is. As grading is subjective from one grading company to the next. I'm trying to figure out a fair price for a 9.0 white pages as it is currently graded. With pricing all over the place I just wanted some input in what you guys think a 9.0 would be worth right now.

  5. I posted this in the Silver Age thread, but it may be more appropriate here to get some opinions. I appreciate any help.

Hi guys, I got a CBCS graded Fantastic Four 48 in a 9.0 white pages like 10 months ago. I got a decent deal on it that's why I bought it.

I was hoping to get some input on what to do with it. I don't really wanna sell it, I'd prefer to trade for another book. What do you think a fair trade value would be? A 9.0 hasn't really sold recently and 9.2 sold recently for 21k. But FMV on GoCollect is 9k for 9.0. So I'm having a little bit of trouble coming to a reasonable price point.

Any insight would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

New add . Happy to have early number 1 back in PC. I used to own first print 9.0 and traded it away few years ago and missed that book. This one matched my other early book grades and fills the void . I have zero urge to keep chasing at this point . I’m happy .

I believe that is correct. He always seems to get his hands on some of the best books. I had no idea that I had the only number 16 cgc 9.8 on the census which I purchased from the same seller. It wasn’t until icculus308win pointed it out to me.

That book is so hard to find in 9.8. @Icculus308win Maybe if you get tired of your copy, you can pass it along to me. LOL. I'm stuck now at 56 of 62 issues of Vol. 1 in 9.8.  😎🐢

@Racerboy1 Congrats on the recent Heritage sale and thanks for helping me out with my collection as well!

I've been of the belief that amidst this massive run up in prices for books that if there is one book out there worthy of growth...it's FF48.  For such a well known issue, I feel like prices are low, relative to the increases I'm seeing from other titles.  I fully expect the Silver Surfer to make an appearance in the MCU at some point and can see this book increasing in value even if/when the existing collectors bubble bursts.  With that in mind, I went out and put my money where my mouth is and bought an investment copy.  At first, I was really only looking at grade relative to price, but once I took a look at this book up close, it presents really well.  Especially with the white pages and the near perfect centering on the spine.

A 9.2 just sold on Heritage for $19,200. More than double the previous high. Hold on to your FF 48s! 🤯🙌

This isn't easy for me to say. I sold my 9.6 #1 2nd print for 1,200 about three years ago. Then my 9.6 Raphael for 300 about two years ago. I also sold a 9.6 error with the Tales of tmnt cover instead for 850.00. Excuse me, I need a minute.

I was going to use the funds towards an 8.0 or maybe even a 9.0 1st print which were selling for about 6 to 8 thousand at the time but I spent it on mostly Silver age stuff. I just always thought there would be time, you know? Then someone pays 90k for a 9.8 and That's All Folks. Game Over. I remember watching that auction end and screaming , "You mainacs! You blew it up! "Damn you all to Hell".......or something of the sort.

Well I think I've finally gone through the 5 stages of grief. "Its just one freak auction, won't happen again. Heck the winner probably won't even pay for it". "I'm so angry!". "Maybe if I wait long enough the prices will come down". "I don't want to live anymore". And finally " Face it, you're an insufficiently_thoughtful_person. A big stupid insufficiently_thoughtful_person".

Oh, I guess you can't say insufficiently_thoughtful_person here. Rats.

So recently I decided to seek out some 9.6's that I like, mainly because of the cover art. About 6 books that haven't gone through the roof so much at this point. One of them I was looking at that I never really gave much notice to was the 4th printing of #1 from 1985. Different cover than the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd print. It even says Reprint on the cover, kinda like its ok with being what it is which is a pathetic miserable 4th printing. Its not trying to fool anyone. It wears its 4th printing label like armor.  I kind of respect that.

Only thing is on the CGC label it doesn't say "Origin and 1st app of The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Splinter & Shredder". Why not? It's a reprint of the same story as the 1st printing isn't it? (isn't it?). If the 2nd and 3rd prints say it then why not the 4th?

Btw started watching the 2012 animated version of TMNT's with my son during dinner tonight. Going to watch all 5 seasons in order instead of all mixed up like I've always done.

That sucks man. I'm kind of in the same boat, where I always wanted to buy the TMNT Mirage run in a high grade but always put it off. And then they started skyrocketing.

I hope you got some cool Silver Age books though. Some of the silver keys are going crazy too.

He said he’s been offered 200K . This guy is a bone head and liar . I’d never pay that money for this book because there are enough of them out there . The meteoric rise and mass dumping of first prints doesn’t look good and the book imo. Every week a new first printing is listed clearly owners are cashing in I can’t blame them .

Agreed. If he was really offered that much and didn't take, that's dumb. He could've sold it and probably bought them all back from someone else for like 120k. Maybe less.

Im tempted to agree with @Icculus308win on this one but it's dependant upon the grade. From what I've seen over the last 15 years a high grade 2nd print (9.6/9.8) is far harder to get a hold of than a lower grade 1st print.

The second print was only a few months after the 1st and had a low print run too. Collectors were not as interested in 2nd prints in those days and it was seen as a reader or something you could bleach to make look like a 1st print. I have often wondered how many were damaged in an attempt to fake them into a first print. There are very few 2nd prints in high grade on the census compared to the 1st and 3rd prints:

    1st print:  980 total slabs, 32 in 9.8, 56 in 9.6 ---- print run 3200

    2nd print: 529 total slabs, 9 in 9.8, 37 in 9.6 ---- print run 6000

    3rd print: 1214 total slabs, 66 in 9.8, 142 in 9.6 ---- print run 35000

So I think the predominant factor is value. 1st print blows 2nd print out of the water, it's not even close. A 9.6 2nd print went for $6250 in Jan 2021 whereas you can't get a 1st print 4.0 for less than $10k. What's interesting is that the print run for 2nd print is closer to first print but the values are in line with the 3rd print even though there are more than 5 times as many. For this reason I think the 2nd print is undervalued and will rise accordingly over the next year.

Getting back to the temptation of @Icculus308win (and this is from the perspective of 2 collectors who own 9.8's of every issue discussed so far) I would be far more likely to hold onto my 2nd print 9.8 than either of the other prints in 9.8 - but that wasn't the scenario provided.

Here I would choose the low grade 1st print. but here:

    $12,000 for a 4.5 1st print or 9.8 2nd print?

I would choose the 2nd print all day every day

For value I absolutely agree, I would choose the 2nd print too. But if I had to choose only one to keep for the rest of my life and couldn't sell, I'd pick the first print and love it forever. 😃

One day I'll get me a first print, but I'm working on the rest of the original run until the right opportunity comes along.
