Wonderful comics, zzutak!
Although I've got to say, I've always found those ads annoying!
-
I agree 100%. My first issue bought off the stands when I was a kid was #54....and you can imagine the major mind expansion I experienced over the next 8 months, reading Jack and Stan and Joe's brilliant work! Changed the course of my life. One of the reasons I'm a commercial illustrator today.
I totally agree that the 50's were the best FF's--and that's saying something. In fact, it's one of the things that's most impressive about the early FF...50 incredible books by the same creative team and then they hit their peak. How many times have we seen that in comics history. Most creative teams run out of ideas in 10-20 issues.

Awesome AF!! The hammer is eerily close to the Marvel version.
So isn't this strong proof that Kirby had the Thor idea first, not Stan? Or maybe that's commonly known.

Must resist... urge to expand into... high grade DC sci-fi......
Fight back!
Why do I get the feeling it's going to be harder to get these books on Ebay after this thread?

Another nice Kirby cover & story. If only I could get my wife to walk in this machine...
Wow, gotta get this issue! Kind of suggestive for a post-code DC.
-
Oops! I see Beaumont beat me to that one!
-
I got this one at Mid-Ohio last November after I fell in love with the color scheme. DC had an infinite variety of colors on their covers. It's hard to imagine what a rack of these comics would have looked like...I'm sure I would have bought every issue if I had grown up in the late 50"s!

I've never seen that Strange Adventures 150, but it's a classic!
-
Great stuff guys. I enjoyed the books and the listing of the artists (the only ones I guessed right were the first Moriera one and the Kirby).
These are very hard to find, but last year I got an Unexpected 7 and 19.

Awesome thread!
Here's a grey tone that is one of my favorites...
I love the pink sky in this cover. The story of the Saragaso Sea reminds me of one of my favorite Hammer films: THE LOST CONTINENT (its quite a little gem of a film).

I bet a high grade, glossy copy of this issue would look awesome. Mine's faded and dull.

I couldn't decide where to put this one.
Maybe
Your best Comic Book acquisition in 2007?
or
POST YOUR SECRET SANTA GIFTS!
That was close, but I didn't play the game and Sharon doesn't quite qualify as Secret Santa -- Secret Schwester maybe??
So it goes here.
An add-in with my latest books from skypinkblu:
All Man 10, April 1960 from Stanley Publications. Classic men's sweat magazine, complete including the logo (plus a little distributor's ink here and there).
Did she include it because she pictures me as the target audience? Because she thinks I "need" it? Inscrutable!
"You can take your pay in women, Sahib McCoy!"
Thanks,
Jack
Wow, this is too good to be true. "Outlaw, Lover, Killer, Dictator." What a magazine!

What is this from, and who drew it? Reminds me of Nestor Redondo.

This is a good idea for a list, but the classification of covers as "classic" by Overstreet is so hit-or-miss your list will be limited, and mostly cofined to the GA.
For example, in the SA many first appearances are not listed as classic covers, apparently because the guide has other things to talk about in its text. But is AF15 not a classic cover? FF 1? BB 28? Those are all classic covers, and there are many others.
It seems like the concept of a classic cover is a GA thing, but it really shouldn't be.

Interesting...
So attachments are now displayed automatically when they're images?
Gack - see the scanner cropped the right side 'cause I removed the backing board prior to scanning... well, suffice to say the right edges are sharp in each case, and I'm very happy with these acquisitions!
Those are a treat to see. Thanks!

Arrived today.
Don't see much wrong with that beauty. 5.5?
Congrats!

Thanks a helluva nice FF #2 for that grade! The chipping is not nearly as visible as it would be on, say, a black cover.

The Dark Horse Conan is great! I love me some Conan. Crush you enemy, see them driven before you, hear the lamentation of their women.
-
on these boards Conan comics seem to be an afterthought. almost never see them posted in the “this week in your collection” thread. he’s never discussed. he’s like a red headed stepchild. has he ever been popular on these boards?
Conan #1 was voted the third most important book of the Bronze Age on these boards in the BA Survivor Series (after GS XMEN 1 and Hulk 181), so I think it's fair to say there's a good deal of respect for Conan in these parts. But as people have noted, the books are readily available and most people who want them already have them.
Here's one of my favorite covers--Buscema without Chan clogging up the works:
-
45. I'm surprised there aren't more people in their 50's or 60's...
-
4,000+. All but a few are SA and BA. All but 2 are raw, many purchased at the time they went on sale.
I'd like to reduce the size of my collection, but never seem to get around to it...

Hooray LG Keys!!!
Gotta love 'em, since they're the only kind of keys for most of us!

Those are incredible! I would think those romances would be next to impossible to find in that condition.

Fantastic covers! Your collection is something I can only dream about at this point, but I'm slowly, slowly building collections of these series.
That Strange Adventures 12 is an incredible cover. It looks like Gil Kane inking himself? It reminds me of his much later 80's style...
