  1. boy. Sometimes people complain about todays computer coloring being too much. But look at that Conan cover - - it just SCREAMS for more tones, especially on Conan himself. By todays standards, it looks HALF finished! The only areas that were rendered with a WINK to realism are the armor!! Everything is solid paintbucket coloring book style
  2. who wants to bet that store gets audited every year for a while???
  3. I dunno. I picked a a bunch in the bodega around the corner. They looked pretty sharp to me.
  4. yeah...around there. 75 to 150 maybe... hard to say..
  5. i dont know, but back then, there WERE probably only 9 known copies. And probably only 90 known collectors!! Comics collecting was in its infancy. BTW - I was in college at the time and remember hearing about the big sale on the news. Sure seemed like a crazy amount of money for a comic book to ME too! I was still getting em for 5 for a dollar.
  6. What do you mean, "pressing BOTH sides"? You can't press just one side of a piece of paper. pressing is not the correct process or term... but the spray isnt why its shiny is it? Like oaktag and other forms of two-diffferent sided boards, you can heat-treat one side only to flatten the paper's rag content, thats what I was getting at.
  7. what does the manufacturer say is the side to use? and why? perhaps they think we prefer a shiny board next to our comics and shiny-ing up ONE side is cheaper than pressing BOTH sides... so Im guessing both sides may in fact have diferent ph-levels, but it's due to something else than pre-planning.
  8. what I dont understand really is why would one side be any different than the other? Isnt the board manufactured to ONE ph-level in huge vats and left to fry into sheets which are cut down to comic board size?? Like amy other paper product? Does flattenning one side (accounting for the shininess of it) CHANGE its ph?? Or are these boards 'married' with 2 different kinds of paper used? dont make sense...
  9. Adam Strange has herpes?? Does Alanna know??? Sardath will kill him!
  10. I just clicked this thread and it went straight to your post, but sometimes it goes to posts I've already read,....so yeah... comes and goes...
  11. Every time I come back to this thread to read a new post or two, the screen always starts way back to comic scans Ive seen before. Anybody else have that problem? It seems to happen only in threads like this with tons of cover scans...
  12. shame about the bottom edge. It sure looks pretty. Its got a real pretty mouth... ken it squeel lak a pig?? ken it? lemme heah it squeel! soooueeee sooueeee
  13. ho won earth can that book be a 4.5??? I hope we never see one lik ethat in the grading contest!! Or are the back cover creases THAT fugly??
  14. Good to see a fellow fan of Kane on Kane. There's some other stories/covers that he did from the different DC 50s titles. I was at dinner with Gil and Julie some years ago and he was still ribbing Julie about not letting him ink his own work. Julie wanted the productivity from the pencillers and he preferred the inks of Anderson/Giella/Greene over the more distinctive stylings of Kane or Infantino. Marvel wised up later on too. letting Gil ink his own Hulk covers, etc. I loved his linework. So refreshing after seeing all his other more "polished" inkers for so many years.
  15. Anyone else here reminded of the much later (but better known) "Flash of Two Worlds" cover? I was thinkin the same thing kemosabe, so I checkd it on Mikes. Flash 123 was September 1961 Fighting Forces #48 was 2 years earlier in August 1959, same month as Flash 108. that site is so cool.. Who IS Mike? Is he on the boards?? Sure wish he was. Somebody get in touch with him and lets wish real hard. Who knows, matbe he'll appear! Just like Neal Adams did!!
  16. not until GL47. And he pencilled and inked the next few issues too!. I loved the release from Giella stiff brushwork. Kane on Kane is the best Kane inking!!
  17. oh. cool. I thought they were recently bought, like at Chicago this weekend. Harley always has a lot of war book at every show.
  18. did Sterling quit the Boards?? What did I miss?
  19. beaytiful war boks! Who had all those issues? Harley?
  20. Benedict Arnold is better than Arnie Sachnusan?? (Lost World)
