They (comics) should last much longer than any of us if stored correctly.

By that time mankind would probably have  found an acceptable + suitable restoration method to retain the popular copies. Most of the early GA books may or require some form of restoration to keep the book pages intact.

My humble guess: If you like to leave your legacy to your great great great great great grand kids and  is on tight budget now, then start collecting those slight pro restored  GA books now at fraction of the price. Your great great great great grand kids will thank you for it. L:P

Oh, don't get me wrong: My comics are well-cared for. Many of the high, high end books -- though not all -- were slabbed, some signed. But I guess I just can't help but think to myself how those GA books (especially) are going to stand up for another 25-30 years without active conservation taking place.

And not to be a jerk to my "great great great great grand kids," but I'm almost more inclined to get those "thanks" from my wife and kids so I can enjoy it :D I guess that brings up my other question:

How long are you going to keep your collections? Any plans to eventually sell them off as a part of retirement?

  2. Something that's popped into my head on occasion is how long WILL our vintage comics actually survive? Comics were originally conceived as disposable entertainment and weren't made with high-quality materials. Instead, they were subject to breaking down over time. For those of you who've invested in expensive, GA and SA comics, do you have a set time frame when you're thinking of eventually letting your comics go out to pasture? Is there a point where they will eventually start breaking down and it would be best to sell them off to enjoy some fiscal return on the initial investments?

@Point Five look who popped by...

I've popped back in again! :-)

I still fondly recall that laminated copy of ASM #1 I was hemming and hawing about buying ($350 or so if I recall correctly) and you both talked me off that ledge. :p One of our earlier PMs from the old board, too!

  5. It's not amateur, lol. Matt Nelson did the resto, way before he was working for CGC.. He said it was slight, and he graded the book a 4.0. It's a bad scan.

Supposedly it can be undone, that's why I didn't let him do color touch.

Maybe I'll take it out of the bank and rescan it and put it in the sales forum. It depends on what I decide I need when we go car shopping, lol.

    :hi: Sha!

Boy, the color is sure nice on that cover! I'd wager a 2.0 as well as it's a touch sharper than my 1.8.

And wow. To think that my copy's got to be a $7k + book is insane. Absolutely insane.

I should probably go and have my collection reevaluated since I have most of the SA Marvel mega-keys but it's been well over 3-5 years since I've tracked their values.

  6. I like myself some low grade ASMs. Thought I'd post some of my worst for your viewing pleasure:

ASM 22: This one has every woman's lips colored pink throughout the book

    I salute you, sir! :applause:(thumbs u:golfclap:

I bought/buy what I can afford and was/am only looking to complete my runs which makes me a very happy camper but when it comes to low grade... :acclaim:

  8. It's the sister copy to Avenger #4 - the first appearance of Captain America in the Silver Age, and I'd almost argue a more eye-catching cover with it's blazing red and yellow coloring and equally dynamic cover art.

A number of years ago I had a nice 8.0/8.5 raw copy I sold here on the boards, which was later pressed into I believe a 9.0 or 9.2. Man, I miss that copy - absolutely gorgeous. Later, I had a chance to buy a copy in VG+ condition but signed by both Stan Lee and Joe Simon. I foolishly passed on the offer. It was priced a touch high as I recall, but I'd never be able to buy it again for that price now - we all have those stories.

Anyhow, my buying has been next to nil for the past few years as I've been busy with my family, teaching, and writing. But every now and again, I pull the trigger. Last night, I decided to bring home a copy of one of my favorite SA key books. :D

So, there she is! CGC 6.0 SS with Stan Lee signature. Presents incredibly well from the images, and needless to say, I'm excited for when it arrives later this week.

How about the rest of you? Have copies to show off? I'd especially love to see those out there with signatures!

  9. Big week (again) for Image - a lots of solid books coming out. I'll be curious to see what y'all think of #4 for this series. I'm on the fence right now ... but after that Super Bowl, anything else is a distance second place lol

I dunno. I'm curious to see how it reads in trade at this point, as I think there's a lot of details and smaller pieces to put together, which can get easily lost over the course of a month - and let's face it, sometimes, it can be a little frustrating to have reread back issues in preparation for an upcoming one.

This isn't necessarily a "bad thing," of course, but it's just a characteristic of this particular storyline - some work better serialized, others are stronger in their entirety.
