  1. I received the BCW Life Magazine bags and boards and I think they work ok. They are a little big. I put three backing boards in each bag to get the fit I wanted.
  2. Do I need to do anything special to call out a double cover book in a submission for pressing and grading? Should it be submitted by itself or is it ok to include it with other comics in the same tier?
  3. How much value hit do you think a 9.4/9.6/9.8 book takes when it grades with Off-White to White pages?
  4. I've used the CGC signature series quite a bit and the turn-around is pretty fast - about 3 months including a press. I wouldn't say it's profitable, but I enjoy having signed books. Books by well-admired deceased signers I think do go for a premium, especially for the more desirable issues and grades. My advice is the age-old collect what you enjoy.
  5. I got the book back and I'm very happy with the results after the CCS pressing. As Doctor Dositheus suggested, I don't think it's possible to remove all traces, but it is a vast improvement. This is a book I purchased myself as a late teen so it's a pretty cool element of my collection. Thanks for all the thoughts!
  6. By the way, they fit my Superman vs Spider-man book perfectly but it was a tight fit, a little tighter than I feel comfortable sliding into the bag. I've learned that this book is called a "one shot" and is actually not a Treasury Edition. I've also learned that BCW makes bags and boards for Life Magazine which are just slightly taller and wider. I've ordered some and I'm hopeful they will work out.
  7. So I bought the BCW Treasury sized bags and boards and they are not so good. The length is the problem with the boards. They are supposed to be 13.5 inches tall, but mine arrived 13 and 3/8 tall which is too short by way too much for me, especially since the board should be slightly taller than the book. Here is how it looks with my Treasury Edition book.
  8. I see BCW has Treasury Edition bags and boards that I think will work for my Superman vs Spider-man book, but the DC Famous 1st Edition books are about 0.5" taller. Will it work for those, too? Anyone using something else?
  9. omg, I am so sorry to hear that. That's about a $300 difference in FMV. I haven't had any silver age C&P because I figure fellow collectors generally would rather they be untouched - I have quite a few from my days collecting in the mid 70's I'm just now slabbing. That back spine was really soiled. I guess that's what led it to reacting badly. I would have been tempted to have it cleaned, too. You've done us all a great service by sharing your experience. Thank you for that.
  10. Thanks for the feedback. I'm encouraged to see that the grades I had in mind line up with the judgements others have made. I felt pretty confident in thinking a press would result in a 9.2 grade. The unpressed grade is kind of tricky since the book looks great at first glance but there are imperfections. I finally decided it would grade as an 8.0. Thanks again for the help!
  11. I am most curious about the gentle, pressable crease on the back of the book running near the left edge from top to bottom. I think this book would get a nice bump from a press. It has like-new gloss. I am the original owner having bought it off the newstand myself, and I've treated it with the utmost care. There are two spine ticks by Ben's foot, and one that is very hard to see in the blue circle. There is a pinhole size piece out along the bottom edge of the back. I'm interested in thoughts for both as-is and if-pressed. Thanks!
  12. Buy with confidence! Puchased a slab from Cory. Excellent communications, fast shipping, properly packaged. Honest seller.
  13. Just wanted to let you know I responded to Ashley's email with pictures last Thursday. I have not heard back yet. I know things could be busy so I'm just posting this update in case that email got lost or missed. I'm actually away on multi-hotel travel so sometimes I wonder about my internet.
  14. Thanks for the quick response. During what hours can I call?
  15. Two days ago I submitted a Contact Us message regarding the mechanical error policy for Newton rings. Four of my eight recently returned comics (including all 3 of the double-sized books) have Newton rings. I supplied details and offered pictures. I have had no response. What is the policy for mechanical error re-holding?
  16. I like this news. My plan is to send this in for the Roy Thomas signing (submissions due July 22) with CCS pressing. Won't it be fun to see how it grades. With the expedited turn-around I think I will have it back by mid-October. I'll post an update then.
  17. I have a beautiful Fantastic Four 166 that looks very high grade even without a press, but it has a corner bang that is the flaw that will give the grade. So I'm wondering (1) how much will it affect the grade assuming otherwise it is 9.8, and (2) will a press remove the corner bang? The bang is on the lower left of the front cover and can also be seen on the back. Thanks for looking.
  18. Thanks, everyone! It's super helpful to get this feedback to develop my grading skills. Looks like the concensus is in the 4.5 to 5.5 range. My own thoughts were that the general appearance made it seem a stretch to go as high as 6.0, but when I noticed the pin hole that made it a 5.5, and then when I noticed the stains in the reflected light I thought it a 5.0. Probably would have listed it as 4.5 if I were selling it. The seller I bought it from recently had it as 7.5 to 8.5. Upon receiving it, I knew at a glance that was way off. Yeah, I returned it.
  19. I want to point out it has a pin hole that goes all the way through on Doc Ock's upper right tentacle just above the letter m in the word bomb and most easily seen on the back cover. Also hard to see are some light stains above and below spidey's left fist and around doc's left foot and lower left tentacle, and also on places on the back. I say stains but might clean - don't know. Thanks for the help!
  20. I have a very nice looking Conan The Barbarian 33, probably at least a 9.2 with a press. On both front and back there is one hard to notice printer crease. Each one is about three inches long and neither one breaks color. I understand the printer creases are not considered defects and should not affect the 9.2 grade. But the comic would benefit from a press to get rid of two light depressions that do not break color. Will this press ok without making the printer creases break color? Do I need to include any special instructions maybe? Thanks!
  21. Thanks for taking a look. Beautiful book in many ways. Bright, clean and glossy. Interior pages complete, supple and not brittle. No stains. Not soiled. Staples tight with no signs of rust. Centerfold tight. Lays flat. But the most notable defect is the missing piece at the top of the front cover measuring about .5 inch by .25 inch. Other defects are present such as the upper-right corner being banged throughout and a crease on the bottom half of the back cover. I think the missing piece makes it a 4.0 but I would welcome other opinions.
