  1. There are some really cool books in this thread. Here are a couple of late run Magnus Robot Fighters. Magnus 19
  2. I just got this book in the mail today. Got it for less than $20 from Gary Dolgoff and couldn't be happier. It has a great Schomburg cover. His later work is so clean. Just great. Does anyone know who did the interiors on this book? It's not really my cup of tea, a bit too "scratchy", but from what I've read so far, it works nicely with the stories. It has an old WGN Sunday morning "The Cisco Kid" feel to it.
  3. Michelangelo... really? Yeah, I guess I can see that in the hands. That's what drawing from life will do for you. They're not, however, similar in their rendering of women. Michelangelo's women are essentially guys with breasts. I see Baker as more of a Velazquez kind of guy. Curvy. from wiki
  4. It's all the Venus of Willendorf's fault. Blame her. Seriously though, take a general art survey course some time. There are chapters devoted to this stuff. (Don't get me started on the Baroque and the Rococo or Manet's "Olympia".) It's like the arrow in the FedEX sign... once you see it, you can't un-see it. With that said, I love Baker's work for more than his occasional "Wile E Coyote: Super Genius" moments. That guy could draw.
  5. Thanks JvR11. Imageshack does the thumbnail code for you, so it's really just copy and paste once you've uploaded.
  6. I'm confused !?! Well, sometimes a cigar is just a cigar, and this may be purely coincedental, but given Baker's history with such things, this was probably intentional.
  7. Nice ones BB. Thanks. (thumbs u There are some interesting things happening on that Wild Boy cover. Here's a Baker story from Diary Secrets 17. There's some really nice drawing to be found here. (The last panel of page 3 is a winner.)
  8. Darn nice looking giant! Ever notice how on virtually every hand that Baker drew, the two middle fingers are together and the other two fingers are spread out. Ken Fred Astaire also used that technique when he danced. He thought it made his hands look shorter. Disney always chopped one finger off. And I guess he thought that made it easier to draw. Baker used all four fingers when the characters were holding a gun. bb Great pick-up JvR11! Baker is all about the hands. The hands don't play nearly as important a role in his St.John's work as they do in his Fiction House stories, but they serve a purpose. In his Tiger Girl and Sky Girl stories, the hands usually point you to where he wants you to look. More often than not that pointing is in service of the composition. However, he will sneak things in there. (What is the woman in the background of the Teen-Age Romances 17 cover pointing at, and why is the blonde's top hand in that position?)
  9. Here's the third, and final, Baker story from True Love Pictorial 3. (I was posting these stories in BZ's thread, but I flaked off into the real world and forgot all bout them. Sorry BZ.)
  10. Thanks Scrooge. Been working. Taking a look around, there are some interesting threads I've missed. I'll see if I can't scare up something else to add to this one.
  11. Wow, what a great thread. Excellent work everyone. A few years ago I toyed with the idea of self publishing. Here's the unfinished title page. And, yep, it is heavily influenced by Wood, Schomburg, and Cole. ( And it's Saaf swipe to boot.)
  12. Thanks jbcomicbox! That Doolin page is something else. (Love the Renee page too.) It's interesting to see the different ways he tackled the "Mars is etherial" problem. Thought he might have tried celluliod overlays. The other cool thing is that he was obviously not afraid to throw the kitchen sink at a drawing. If it didn't work, white it out and try something else. (it's either that or he's left-handed and working faster than his ink can dry.) Great stuff. Thanks again
  13. Great Planets BZ! Issue 57 is, IMO, by far Doolin's best Planet cover. No wait, it's 28, ...uhh 53, .... 55... maybe 56,... no, it's 57.... maybe,... they're all great. His interior work is pretty snazzy too.
  14. Kevin Nowlan Sure, his early work has that weird, 80's retro-mod look, but I'll buy anything that guy draws.
  15. Here's Al Walker's Greesemonkey Griffin from Wings Comics 88 for your reading pleasure.
  16. Thanks BB! No idea when he started, but by '52 Lubbers was working on Tarzan.
  17. Did someone say GGA? Great Phantom Ladies BZ! from this book
  18. Purely a guess: Hooks Devlin by Alex Blum/ Matt Baker in Fight Comics? The art has an early Baker-ish look.
  19. Here's another story from True Love Pictorial 3. (It is complete. Page 92 is an ad page.) The story is all over the place, (fraternity pins? smoking? Someone must have not gotten the memo to change the setting.) but enjoyment of the narrative is not the reason I buy these books. It's all about the art. Ric Estrada. Hate to say it, but I'm not too familiar with his work. It's pretty darn good.
  20. That's just impressive. All that volume is implied. He's painting with the ink. Ingles is cazy good. I'd love to see some of the western art if you have it handy. Thanks BZ!
  21. It's kinda, sort of, familiar. Maybe the answer will pop into my head. maybe a big hint would help... Approved Comics 12 - Northwest Mounties
