  1. The Gwenom cover illustrates the depth of knowledge of most modern buyers.

Robbie mentioned in an interview last year that Gwenom was coming, savvy modern speculators bought in then....

    Watch Saturday.

DC will announce formally that Rebirth spins out of Darkseid War, even though the info is out there informally.

Jusstice League #40-48 will go nuclear then.

    Not today.

    Saturday.

It's fun to heard the sheep.

Well, you have this all figured out then....except people don't speculate on comics because of story anymore, it's all about covers and 1st appearances.

Isnt JL 40 the first Grail?

Yes, but that was not the point he was making. When I tried to coax that 1st appearance out of him, hell fell flat on his face.

    You're joking, right?

    Gotta be...

I was simply pointing out to the board, that in my opinion Darkseid War is going to follow a similar pattern as Guillory's Gwenom cover.

You had to show off your big brain with a condescending remark that I was off base.

I Instantly posted one cover & derailed your argument:

    Anyway.

Let's see how it shakes out....

So you're saying that will "heat up" because of a 1st appearance then? Because you didn't mention anything about that.

    Okee Dokee

 Stay with me here. I know there has been one back and forth exchange so it's hard to follow.

You missed my point entirely so why bother?

  7. Anyone have a appearance list of Duke Thomas...is Batman 21 the true 1st or B&R Futures End.

    It's Batman # 21

would We Are Robin 1 variant be considered the 1st appearance of him in a Robin costume....not sure that costume will be the one he wears later on.

No, this issue will be the 1st real appearance. We are Robin is more a group of "Robins".

At least that's what I've been told when I tried to make that same argument.

Well people tend to go overboard when speculating on 1st appearances of costumes on covers...it could be a 3rd printing and he doesn't even have to be inside the comic for the value to go up. Guess we'll see when Batman 50 comes out.

    Heres what I see

    Batman # 50

    Batman

    1. Return of Bruce Wayne

    2. First appearance of Bats, ( new old batman )

    3. Batman new Bat Suit

    Robin

    1. First Appearance of Duke Thomas as Robin

    2. New Robin Suit

all for a measly $5.99 lol

    No.

Duke doesn't appear in a Robin suit.

    Sorry.

So then there's nothing new in #50 for robin?

On Duke Thomas we just have his first appearance in Batman Vol 2 # 21 so far.

    sure he's in it.

    he's part of the action.

he assists batman like a sidekick.

batman has a "proposal" for him.

he's just NOT in a robin costume

  9. Getting back to an earlier post,

I'm surprised to see Spider-man/Deadpool #1 regular doing so well at $15.

Would have thought it was WAY overproduced and too recent.

    Patrick

The gamestop variant is doing really well also started high and holding well i seen a graded copy show up but idk what happened to it

Yea, hindsight it was dumb to not preorder a bunch, but I had the same thought that dealers would go heavy on them.

The GameStop is a different animal. I don't know of any others that have held value. If you do the math on what you have to spend to get enough points for one its a pricey book.

Am I reading it wrong or are there 6,000+ Gamestop locations?

I "do" know they have most of these variants on lockdowm.

I tried to bribe a manager that comes in for some type of regular trade deal.

He said they don't get many of each.

  10. I once wrote an "investment column" for Clay's Comics (well, a tryout, anyways) in Hayward, CA in 1991. This was just after the Lobo mini had come out, and I was suggesting that it might be the next ASM #129.

Which, in theory, wasn't a bad prediction, had DC treated the character correctly.

But, as many of you know, it didn't quite pan out that way.

    Oops.

    Hey, I was 18.

    :insane:

Do you think that is the "secondary grail" behind Omega Men, now?

    If not, what?

In a world that pays me $10-$15 for X-Force 2's, Lobo #1 has potential.

( You're also seven years younger than me?! Jebus. you look like you got beat up with a bag of donuts. I had you pegged as seven years older. Minimum )

Oh please. I've seen you at shows, you look like you got hit by every branch of the ugly tree you fell out of, and you have a distinctly stalker vibe.

    :D

I'm no prize by any stretch, but there's no way on earth I look like I'm in my late 50's.

    Silly Larry.

PS. I'd look to books like JLI #18-19, Legion '89 #4, etc.

I'm handsome as the day is long.

    And. I. Know it.

    JLI 18 it is.

    1st main man Lobo.

Has a nice ring to it.

Also. The cover is absolutely fabulous.

Man, Kevin Maguire was king of the world at one time.

    Why?

    Ist Lobo in current incarnation?

  13. More Marvel variants (over 700 different variants according to the article) are being discounted for retailers:

    http://www.bleedingcool.com/2016/03/17/david-gabriel-the-prince-of-variants/

I wonder which comics are included in this?

This is the part I'm most interested in:

"... including many that were previously restricted for sale."

Man, I hope this included that Star Wars 1 of 5000 they put out...

Considering that star wars 1 alone had 100+ different variant covers (and most of the books going up for sale look to be non-RI, star wars related overstock) I don't think this is as significant as a few would like to think that it is. (thumbs u

    -J.

    J-, based on your "math"

I just bought obnoxious quantities of 1:200 , 1:100, & 1:50 & 1:25 variants, can you now please Decipher the print runs of those titles with your "Comichron Algorithm."

    Chump.

So, two retailers (on these boards) are now adamant that they print far more than the ratios of the variant books. I suppose there's a website in the far reaches of the internet somewhere that would contradict that.

I'll go ahead and trust the retailers that have NOTHING to gain by saying this.

Give up the ghost (thumbs u

    lol Seriously.

Chuck and Larry are probably the least credible retailers that post on these boards.

Larry (his past public controversial remarks aside) because he was the first and main guy to hype up the rarity and ultra low print run of Vader down #1 right before he proceeded to auction off a copy three or four times on ebay, as well as the rarity and alleged desirability of his own phantom variants and Chuck because of his will documented and non-stop hatred and disdain for RI variants that he wishes didn't exist at all for anyone so he wouldn't feel pressure to up his orders to compete with the larger retailers.

I can't wait to buy some of these at 50% off COVER price. I love variants!

    WHAT??

Are there RETAIL INCENTIVE variants included in that sale???

    It can't be!!

    :o

    Glad that it's "out there"

It's against Diamond retailers terms of sale to post.

This happens ALL the time since I've been in business.

Before the internet it was Distributor warehouse sales.

This happened with the Venom 1:50's....

    This isn't new.

Distributors liquidate overstock that they are storing for publishers.

( publishers might even have more somewhere else )

    Do the math on that.

  16. Let's talk about books that are heating up shall we? :applause:

    :roflmao:

Extraordinary X-Men #8 SOLD OUT in shop.

    Re-order coming Friday.

New Lost in Space #1 doing great.

Weird indy book Tommy doing $$ online.

Haunted Mansion #1 $50 for all four covers.

    Back to your squabble....

TON of time on your hands for a Wednesday....

  17. Sigggghhhh...

Paying half cover for Ratchet & Clank was grossly overpaying.

It's been quarter box fodder & shop overstock bulk out for years.

I've been buying them there too.

I "KNOW" that I've mentioned it in the past....

If a modern comic is selling well because it's a "media tie in", If you like money, the place to sell those books raw is Amazon. The worlds largest trusted online marketplace.

It's where civilians go first to buy.

You will get more money for your Power Rangers there....

You will get more money for your Hip Hop covers there....

You will get more money for your Over the Garden Wall there....

    You will get ripped-off there.........

Your comics will get mailed horribly from there.....

  19. So, you see, it's not reasonable to conclude that anyone was asking...much less actually selling...New Mutants #87 for $25 or $60 in April or May of 1990, despite your protestations to the contrary.

New Mutants #87 was a "legit" $50--$100 wall book by December 1990 despite what the guides & various updates had it listed for.

My shop opened February 1st 1990 & New Mutants #87 was "THE" first Christmas list item for my shop.

    Everybody wanted this book.

I suspect the real first Christmas list item for your shop that year was actually Superman #50, which caught everyone by surprise, and was an instant hit.

Nevertheless, there's a substantial difference between April/May of 1990, and December of 1990. The book was definitely on the rise.

I'm not so sure it was "$50" on the rise by that point, because none of the contemporary sources report any of that, but I won't quibble with you about that.

I was selling them for $50.

A shop twenty miles away called & asked WHY I was selling NM #87 for $50.

He claimed to be charging $100.

It was the first time another retailer called me.

Earlier that year September / October in Boston at Fred Greenbergs show, a NY dealer ( Brad? big, boisterous ) bought a table & brought nothing but a briefcase full of cash.

He put a BUYING New Mutants #87 $25ea sign on his table.

Dealers lined up & sold their copies at $25. I sold him the few dozen I brought.

    I was absolutely thrilled.

When the show opened he lined all the copies in the room on his table for $50 & sold most of them.

    It was epic.

After the dust settled, I remember dealers picking my brain asking what made me buy so many New Mutants #87 in the first place. It was a mess selling X book with lousy art in their opinion. Why buy it? They couldn't figure it out.

    The answer was easy.

Rob Liefeld's final panel of New Mutants #86 got me so excited for the new character I spent a month prebuying copies from CBG.& prepaying at shops...

I didn't have a Diamond account at the time.

New Mutants #87 paid for one though.

Your experiences aren't reflected in any of the contemporary industry literature of the day. Again, not saying it didn't happen....but there's no contemporary reports of it, anywhere.

I don't ask anyone to trust my anecdotes. I don't think anyone else should either.

A lot of things happened, in a relatively short amount of time. Memories get fuzzy.

You would be the first person I've ever heard get so excited by a single panel torso shot of a character, with nothing else to go on.

    hm

You would be the first person I've ever heard get so excited by a single panel torso shot of a character, with nothing else to go on.

    Yes.

It certainly got allot of retailers in New England to notice me....

Tough when your the new guy.

I spec new material every week with solid mechanics built over years' but NOTHING beats my gut instincts.

If I like something, I'm never afraid to roll with it.

    Epic wins...

    Disastrous losses...

    I love it.

    Hey Guys,

I am starting a new thread on comics shipping that "could" get hot. I have been ordering new comics for 22 years and love to speculate. I'm OK at it too. I'm going to post a new pick every Tuesday.

Parusing this weeks ship list one book sticks out to me that I will buy extras of.

    Ratchet & Clank #1

Here is criteria I use to break down the early decision to speculate.

Story:( is writing a cause to purchase? ) neutral

Art: ( is artwork a cause to purchase ) yes, looks reflective of video game

Availibility: is it In stock at Diamond: as of this writing, Yes ( and DC is well known to overprint)

Dual Collectable: there is a huge fanbase allready collecting Ratchett and Clank material. They WILL be seeking out the comic, competing with comic collectors.

Print Run: I would guess slightly higher than a middle tier DC

Is it a Number one? Yep, and collectors are drawn to them like fanboys to fudge.

    3 out of 5 stars

Speculating on new comics is one of the facets of this business that keeps Wednesday magical to me.
