  1. Sounds like my wife except she wouldn't tolerate stopping at any garage sale at all.
  2. (thumbs u You can go wrong getting those kinds of comics for 50¢ each.
  3. Actually, Kirby's Sandman was in Gaiman's Sandman, along with Brute and Glob (also from Kirby's Sandman).
  4. A grading contest is meaningless. All they have to do is purposely under-grade and they get off scot-free for being tight graders.
  5. Would CGC grade such a book, since the outer cover is loose?
  6. I know grading from a scan is not reliable, but in the grading contests here, you're doing great if you get about half right. I'm not sure how that translate to telling the difference between a 9.6 and 9.8 when you have it in hand. But to get it right 19 or 20 times out of 20 seems very exceptional. Even experienced people who deal in high grade all the time sometimes disagree with CGC. I'm sure CGC graders disagree with each other some of the time.
  7. I love this thread. It's fun to see all the great finds. Sometimes what people attribute to luck is really the result of hard work. You make your own luck a lot of the times. Often the work you put into finding comics translates into "lucky" finds. Keep up with the "lucky" finds.
  8. They're probably counting on the fact that many just want to get rid of their collections no matter the price. Sadly, a lot of people don't know where else to go.
  9. Wow, that's nice of her. Was it her husband's or son's collection?
  10. Got these cheap at a used book store. Looking forward to a lot of good reading.
  11. Not to get into it, but for the Hobbyist wouldn't a regular tacking iron do a lot of what they want? You know, spot re-flattening instead of the full meal deal. And many hundreds cheaper. No? No boardie-love for the lowly Tacking Iron 'round here? Using a tacking iron only may make the spot(s) look different than the area around it. Although not necessary every time you use a tacking iron, it may be best to do a full press to get a more uniform look. I liken it to only ironing parts of a shirt. Although the rest of the shirt may not be wrinkled, you can still see the difference between what was ironed and what was not.
  12. Garage sales are almost 90% misses...I don't waste my time checking them out unless its very nearby or close by to errands I'm running. I did get a longbox of comics for $25 that was almost all Spiderman (a good run of ASM) once! I think I was the only one that showed up with interest in the comics (late in the day) and the guy just wanted to get rid of them. If you going to random garage sales and finding comics about 10% of the time, then you are doing great. In my experience, it's been much less than that overall. You're much better off going to garage sales that advertise having comic for sale. Even then, the odds of finding good stuff at decent prices are very slim and you're competing with other collectors and dealers.
  13. The movie will make money because the production costs were lower. Marvel doesn't have to hit a homerun each and every time. Singles, doubles, and triples add up. You just don't want to strike out (lose money).
  14. Found this at a thrift shop today. Cost me a quarter plus tax. Acme Novelty Library #3
  15. Even if he was a shill, he's not far from the truth as far as it being possible. I find the situation plausible.
  16. I think the story is plausible. When I first caught wind of the comic I was already too late to buy at below cover. I ended up buying 50 copies off a distributor for 65¢ each. Back then, there were a lot of distributors. The Buyers Guide was full of ads from small distributors. Even after all these years, I still have a few left. I'm sure there huge stashes still to be brought out to the market. There's no sense in flooding the market, when you can hopefully get more in the long run. Why kill the goose that lays golden eggs? Of course, if you need to cash out soon, now is a good time.
  17. The hard part of finding these inserts is you have to open the comic to find them. You cannot spot them easily by just looking on the outside of the comic. The same is true with other inserts like the DC survey ones. That's why they're overlooked so often. And even if they are seen, a lot of people are unaware that they're any different.
