  1. Kinda hard to miss "NOT FOR RESALE" on the cover. Still, some people just don't know any better. Sort of like those Famous 1st Editions that people mistaken for the originals.
  2. That was my first also. Right after I saw Star Wars for the first time, I ordered 50 copies from an ad in the Buyer's Guide. Back then there were a lot of small distributors that you could buy multiple copies. I gave away most of them to my friends and family. I'm left with just a few.
  3. Just bend up your NM copies. Easy peasy. It's mind-boggling how many copies were stashed away, waiting for that easy retirement. At the beginning, it was like printing money. Those that were late to the party were left holding boxes of landfill. I know of people that opened a comic shop with little more than their meager collections and no business plan, thinking they would be making a decent living. Life teaches hard lessons, sometimes.
  4. Personally, the timeline shouldn't matter much. Ethically, once they knew the comics were stolen, they shouldn't have sold them. The passage of time doesn't make it right.
  5. That movie stunk. I'm sure Disney can come up with something better.
  6. I agree, not exactly Byrnes' best effort. Byrne was best when Terry Austin inked his pencils. Doesn't Mary Jane look like BWS drew her?
  7. If anybody tried to touch my wife or daughter inappropriately, they would have to face me. Doesn't matter if you're rich or famous. It's not okay. Never.
  8. It's never easy to lose a loved one. My deepest condolences.
  9. I wouldn't risk using anything abrasive like Magic Eraser on comics. It would remove gloss and color from comics.
  10. Another consideration is shipping if selling online. The cost of shipping is added to the price of the comic. If a comic is priced at $5.00, but the shipping is $10.00, then the buyer must be willing to spend $15.00 for the comic. I always look at the total cost of the transaction in addition to the "price" of the comic. This may include tax, buyer's premium, commission and whatever fees the seller dreams up.
  11. "Otherwise, I'm just going to give them to my friend's son--no matter what they are worth." I wonder if he's going to be true to his word if he doesn't get an offer he'll accept? Cuz it looks like he won't be getting anything close to what he's indicating.
  12. Self stick bags are accidents waiting to happen. Trust me, I know from personal experience.
  13. I think the point divad is trying to make is that is the hobby is supported by old geezers and eventually the hobby will become irrelevant to most people and be forgotten.
  14. For me it was an acquired taste. I wasn't into Miller's DD until I read an article in the Comics Journal. By the time I got into it, it was already up to #170 and I had to scramble around to get back issues. I remember paying $20.00 for #158.
  15. It was discovered years later, well after the Statute of Limitation had run out on the theft.
  16. I certainly hope he has a receipt or something written to identify the books. I would not be so trusting if it was based on a verbal agreement. Always have some record of what you leave in the care of others. That would make it easier to recover stolen goods. Does he have any images?
  17. There are so many great prizes, it's really hard for me to decide. I'll go with: Prize #17: $100 via PayPal - donated by AnthonyTheAbyss Thanks AnthonyTheAbyss.
  18. At first glance, I thought the SW was a 9.8. But when you enlarge it, there's a tendency to see tiny flaws that are magnified and imagined ones that aren't really there. I still think the top left corner of the front should have kept it from being graded 9.8. While I was wavering between a 9.6 and a 9.8, I played it safe by choosing the lower grade. Wrong move. On the Strange Adventures #50, I took a gamble and graded it higher than I normally would. I know I usually undergrade on the lower grades, as a lot of guys here do. Grade higher than I normally do.
  19. I think a lot of people don't use the the criteria for grading that CGC uses. Some tend to undergrade in the mid/lower grades. Personally, I would give it a 2.5; but based on my personal observations, I think CGC will give it higher grade. Possibly 3.5. BTW, that is one of my favorite Ditko covers
  20. You're right- pressing is not hard. Anybody can throw a comic into a press. Pressing well is hard. The press is just a tool; it does not do all the work. You do. You still need knowledge and skill to use it properly and be good at it.
