  1. I've been reading reading this thread for only a year now so I am curious to know what was the main drive for comic speculation prior to the Walking Dead TV being announced back in January 2010. Clearly movies (prior to Jan 2010) had some impact on comic prices but not nearly as much as TV show announcements since then. And the internet has (in many cases) created an exaggeration of prices for some comics. I know small print runs of a particular issue plays a role in pricing a book, but even with that there has to be a moderate demand for that issue. I mean there could be a print run of 100 copies of Captain Widget #1 but if no one cares about widgets, then the book is only worth the paper it's printed on. I remember all the way back in the late 90's & early 2000's when Wizard Magazine was THE place for comic speculation. Couldn't wait to get my copy in the mail and always hoped it was delivered a few days before comic stores received their copy. Comics would start heating up a week or two after the monthly mag came out. They would also speculate on upcoming movies and who would be best to star in them. Of course, as Mr. Linguiniii stated (and Dukes40 reiterated) there is always the scenario of a comic just being high quality in story and art which drives value, although I will say that time and more importantly supply/demand must be part of it too in order for a book to have significant value. My apologies if this is not the appropriate thread for an answer to my question. I just find comic book speculation facsinating (more so than any other collectible). Meck
  2. And try finding a 2nd print of that one. Never even seen one before in the wild. Meck
  3. I'd rather slab those Roos. Wonder what a 9.8 would go for?
  4. Anybody catch the upcoming Black Widow (Campbell) variant? For a Campbell variant, it is somewhat lacking (compared to SUP SPM 20). Thoughts? Meck
  5. Just wait till GOTG movie comes out. We'll all be wearing Rocket Raccoon underoos before the sequel!! (thumbs u Meck
  6. Do you think specific variant issues affect/skew the stats? As hot as J Scott Campbell is, did collectors anticipate the feeding frenzy for the #20 variant? And now that he is doing subsequent variant covers, will stores order more standard copies just to (potentially) cash in these variants? Meck
  7. Totally agree. There are liberties that can be taken in the comic that don't translate well to TV. Not to say I want the Gov to move away from his role as an antagonist. However, I think showing a more human side to him is very realistic.....considering how much he "cared" about his daughter. OT - I think AMC (or the writers of the show) dropped the ball a bit over the last few seasons. I would have liked to have seen a few episodes (person) of life outside the Rick "clan". In the first season, this show was all about portraying a realistic environment of the living existing with the walking dead. Although a highly improbable scenario, I thought it brilliant and entertaining when Rick's group went to the CDC and found out a little something about the infection. I think for me, as a viewer of this show, it is human nature to want to know or understand why/how something like this could happen. It would have been interesting if AMC devoted a few episodes to the scientists or "talking heads" who had more information about the disease. I get that this show is not World War Z. That it's focus is about a particular group of individuals trying to survive this apocalypse. I just think a new or fresh perspective every now and then would liven things up. Curious - does anyone know how much time has passed since the zombie apocalypse stared? Meck
  8. No offense, but I actually stopped reading Spider-Man after that travesty. Somebody was smokin' wayyyy too many tennis shoes to come up with a storyline like that one. Carl
  9. I think Golden Books is now with Random House. I left a message with a rep there over a week ago and have not yet heard back. I will try and follow up. I would be just as interested in knowing which HQ was drawn first. Perhaps each artist started working on their respective books at the same time, but I highly doubt it. If I had to guess, I would think the Golden Book Harley Quinn was first. The artist on this book mentioned that after her appearance in the Animated TV Series, DC promoted HQ through merchandise next (which included the Almost Got 'Im book). It is plausible that DC had more lucrative channels and, perhaps, higher margins to distribute/sell merchandise rather than comics. It would seem logical that merchandise came before the comics. Just a theory. I have no concrete proof....yet. Meck
  10. Sniping IS the only way if you either remember when the auction ends OR have a reliable sniping software program where you can set it and forget it. I tend to forget things (a lot) and need lots of reminders when an auction is near the end, so software program is key for me. Meck
  11. I've got a quarter that I'll sell for fifty cents. Anyone? Bueller? Meck
  12. Darn, I just Paypal'd you some $ to pay for that test.
  13. If you have any other suggestions to find this info, I'm all ears. Meck
  14. I agree!! This has been a lot of fun. And thought provoking....in a good way. Whatever comes out of these discussions should only "better" the hobby. Now let's figure this darn thing out!!!!! Meck
  15. This of course is your opinion.....which I respect but don't agree with. As a collector of comics and other pop-culture items,I personally would want to have in my possession the most original rendering of a character. I would consider that item to be a first appearance. At this point, it doesn't matter to me whether the toy book is deemed to be a comic. The interior art is in a comic-format similar to standard comic artwork, which is all I care about to make a decision. If I am in the minority, so be it. I'm not trying to sway anybody's stance, one way or the other. Just trying to obtain some additional facts. Meck
  16. I have been remiss in my facts about the artwork in BA 12. Bruce Timm did not do the artwork. It was Mike Parobeck. My apologies. Meck
  17. I am closer to solving this mystery.....and yet farther. The artist who penciled Almost Got 'Im is certain that he rendered the artwork for that book in late 1992. So it appears the only way to clear this up is to get date information from Bruce Timm (regarding the artwork from BA 12). Anybody on this board next door neighbors to Mr. Timm??
  18. We were all getting along so well. Let's keep this train chuggin' until we get all our questions answered!
  19. Ruh-roh. It looks like its Scooby-Snack time!!!
