    Set Scores

I have been pushing for a set completion modifier for a while now. There is going to be a major overhaul of our backend systems and the registry later this year. When this upgrade goes live, I am hoping that the scoring system will be more streamlined and transparent. As it stands right now, a completion modifier would require an extensive code change on an archaic legacy system. After this year's Awards, I will have more information to share. Thanks!
  2. Hey @nepatkm Unfortunately, yes, that is the problem. A general search for Punisher Max only returns issue 49: A general search for Punishermax returns the rest of the issues in the census. I have a weekly meeting with a member of the grading team tomorrow, I will bring this issue up with them and see if there is any other solution. I do not have write access to the database, so I would probably have to put in a ticket with the contractor that administers the census. I will let you know what we come up with. Edit: Did you buy the books in question, or did you submit them yourself? It may be a case of the original owner removing those particular books from the census. This happens from time to time, and it would explain why they are not showing up.
  3. Hello @nepatkm I apologize for missing this post. The issue seems to be with the title. There is a slot in Punisher (Complete) : Notice there isn't a space between the r and the m..... A search for Punisher Max returns no results. =/ I would re submit this book to get it re-labeled. This would be considered a mechanical error, and there should be no cost to you.
  4. Hello again everyone, Just a reminder to PLEASE read the first post in this thread before requesting new sets. Certificate numbers in plain text(which I can copy and paste) is crucial because it helps cut down on my research time, and it ensures correct data entry. Also, starting now, I will not create new sets with less than 3 first printings, regardless of the number of variants. This may seem arbitrary, but the registry is starting to become cluttered with obscure sets that bring no value to other collectors. Thanks! -Brian
  5. Hello @mediaedh Please post set creation requests here: This helps me keep track of set creation requests. Thanks!

    Set Scores

Thanks for your input @ADAMANTIUM Great points, and I have brought them up repeatedly at our weekly meetings. Thing is, the points are pretty much for entertainment purposes. When we pick the award winners, we look for way more than points. The winners I picked last year didn't have insane point totals, I looked at the comments for passion and sincerity. There were a lot of sets with cut and pasted summaries, no mention about how they felt about the books, nothing about how they acquired them. Keep in mind, I had just hired in, and wasn't really up to speed at the time, I had to rely on my colleagues to know what to look for. When I took over the registry, I got kinda freaked out about points, and I'm still a little freaked about the fluctuations over the past 2 years. There are going to be some major updates to the registry this year, and I have insisted that we take a deep dive into how keys are scored, and how/when they are updated. The speculation market is insane right now, and I don't think that it's worth our time chasing these fluctuations when we don't even set prices in the market. This issue is pretty much always at the back of my mind, especially when I do score adjustment requests. It's still the hardest part of my job, and it turns out, it doesn't really have to be. It's just the way I am, I love challenges! lol. More to come. -Brian

  12. 2022 "THIS SCORE NEEDS FIXIN" REQUESTS" This is the place to request that scores in the CGC Registry competitive scores be evaluated. You may have slight disagreements with scores, but some of those slight disagreements just boil down to a judgment call. What we're looking for here are clearly incorrect scoring examples. When making requests, please use full title of the book and publish date. Start with the key issues that you feel need the attention the most. Please avoid requests like "Update all scores in X-Men (1963)." Please note: Scores are loosely based on Fair Market Value. CGC does not set prices for comic books in the open market. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Please see this post by Gemma for more information: FAQ - How are comics scored? Comic scores do not equate to market dollars. A more valuable book will in most cases receive more Registry points, but its score is not directly correlated to its value. The algorithm is also designed to enhance and encourage competition in the Registry by reducing extremes in value differences between grades and categories. For this reason a very valuable book may receive fewer points than might be expected, or a relatively common book will receive more points than might otherwise be expected. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- If it is determined that a score needs to be adjusted, I will take the last 3-4 recent sales on GP Analysis to come up with an average score. If there is insufficient sales data, I will go to the published price in The Overstreet Price Guide. Also, please focus on single book. For example, Upgrades that are under valued in points, not 700-800 books that need to go up one point. *Posts that have been edited after the original posting date will be skipped and not revisited. Meaning, if you add more to your request at a later date, I will not fulfill it. Your request will be ignored and you need to resubmit your request. In short, don't try to skip others. Make a new post for your new requests, don't add to the old one. ***If the score simply has a “0” just PM me and I will fix it.**** Thank you for your patience and participation in the registry!
  13. 2022 "THIS SET DOESN'T EXIST, PLEASE BUILD" REQUESTS This is the thread to request full set additions to the CGC Registry. (Requests for expansions to existing sets can be made in 2022 "I WANT THIS TO BE ADDED TO A SET" REQUESTS) Please add your request to this thread. Also, check to make sure that the set does not already exist on the registry (it helps to skim through this thread and make sure another user hasn’t requested it already, too) Providing certification numbers of CGC Graded books in your request helps ensure accurate data entry, which benefits everyone. IMPORTANT: *There must be more than two issues/books in the set or graded by CGC to create a set. As a rule, if there is only one issue graded (even if the issue & variant of the same issue are graded) we will not make the set. We prefer that there be evidence of someone collecting the series rather than just having passion for the one issue. You are welcome to display these books in the custom registry sets until you are able to obtain and grade additional issues. CGC reserves the right to reject a set creation request if it is deemed to be obscure or unpopular among the collecting community. We want the registry and its sets to be inclusive to all members, therefore some sets may be recommended as custom sets instead of competitive. *Any request for a "custom" or specialized set that is competitive will need require a detailed list with CGC Certification Numbers. The complete list of books should be included in the request post. Competitive "Custom" sets are currently limited to Cover Artist complete sets & Mini-series/One-Shots sets for a character/title. Any others should be created using the non-competitive custom set option now available. Please note: Custom/Specialized Sets expanding across different titles are very time consuming to build. Please be patient. *Posts that have been edited after the original posting date will now be skipped and not revisited. Meaning, if you add more to your request at a later date, I will not fulfill it. Your request will be ignored and you will need to resubmit your request. In short, don't try to skip others. Make a new post for your new requests, don't add to the old one. When the set has been added, I will "LIKE" to your post directly and comment with the date of the set addition. This will allow all collectors to see the progress of the requests. If you have any questions, please contact me at: brogiers@collectiblesgroup.com All the best for your collection in 2022!
  14. This is the thread where you can request that issues or titles be added to existing sets in the CGC registry. (If you would like to request an entirely new set, please use 2022 "THIS SET DOESN'T EXIST, PLEASE BUILD" REQUESTS" Please list the EXACT TITLE OF THE SET you wish to expand in your post and the TITLE, ISSUE NUMBER, and VARIANT. Also, PLEASE include the Certificate numbers, especially for large requests. This helps ensure the data is entered correctly the first time. This information can be found by looking up your CGC Certification Number. (Please note that books must be shipped from CGC and appear on our Census before they can be added to the registry) Here are some examples: Set: Howard the Duck (2016) Book: Howard the Duck 1 Lim Sketch Cover Cert Number 1234567-123 (example) Set: Skottie Young Cover Set Book: Black Widow 1 Young Variant Cover Certification Number 1234567-123 (example) If a book is being requested and there is a discussion or disagreement with the removal or addition of that book, then more time will be allowed for the discussion to take its course before the book is added or removed. When the book has been added, I will "LIKE" your post and comment with the date of the addition. This should allow the rest of the community to see the progress of their pending requests. If you have any questions, please contact me at: brogiers@collectiblesgroup.com Thank you for participating in the CGC Registry!

    Set Scores

Thank you for your input@Rosland I definitely agree. This issue has been in my head since I started. Tying scores to FMV is a great idea, on paper. Implementation is another matter entirely, due to the sheer volume of books in the registry. I will be taking up this cause again after the new year, I would very much like to implement an automated solution when it comes to scoring, and see what it will take to implement a completion modifier.

    Set Scores

Hey Everybody, My boss got back to me, and he has some questions. I would appreciate input from you all before I respond. ------------------------------------------------- Which method have our rivals chosen? E.g. PSA, PCGS, BGS (I know PCGS uses the GPA of grades in a set as a factor) How a scoring change will affect our current sets – will it upset a lot of people? Once we have a few ideas whittled down, I can see in the DB what %age of sets this will change. Any thoughts about collection scoring vs set scoring. I see a trend in coin collecting towards trophy-hunting -------------------------------------------------------- Anyone here collect coins as well? I'm really interested in your thoughts about scoring between comics and coins. I realize they are completely different animals, but it looks like the coin scoring is a bit more complicated, but it seems to be more equitable. Thanks!

    Set Scores

^^^ This. I brought up this topic at our bi weekly registry meeting today. I sent @Qalyar's post detailing how some of the keys are affecting set scoring overall to my boss, he will review it and get back to me. The most popular option among my colleagues is removing the ridiculously scored issues from competition. I do understand this may upset some people, However, I think this will probably be the most cost effective and fair option of them all. So what would be a fair cutoff? 5000? 10000? We may have to do a deep dive into the database to determine average total set scores, and compare that to the key/grail scores. (I am not a DBA, so I would have to work with my boss and do a lot of research to even begin to code this.) I really want to come up with a solution that satisfies the customers, and at the same time be reasonable to the higher ups. I spend more time than I should on scoring issues, whether its adjusting the score for one issue/series that happens to pop, or finding a score for obscure sets. More to come.... Thanks! -Brian

    Set Scores

This is turning out to be the most challenging part of this job. What I was told to do is go by Overstreet, if it's not in there, then we average the sales from the past 3 or so years. I think this is the most fair way to score the books that "pop". I don't think it's fair to adjust the score for a comic that had one big sale. It could very well be a money laundering scam. I do as much research as I can, but sometimes there isn't a logical explanation for why a $4 comic is suddenly worth $10k + I will follow up with my boss this Thursday, and I will let you all know what was said. Thanks!
