Any comic stores in SF or the Bay Area?

I'm an east coaster heading west for a few days. What are some good comics shops in or around San Francisco? Thanks, JB

A-1 in Sacramento. Bit of a ride but a nice store with a great back issue selection.

A-1 in Sacramento is probably the best store in Northern California, if not the Western United States. But it's a 90 minute drive from San Francisco.

In the Concord/Walnut Creek area, try Flying Colors comics. They have a pretty good back issue selection but most of the older stuff is mid- to low-grade and you have to ask for it. Flying Colors really shines, IMHO, in their selection of graphic novels and small-press stuff.

Thanks for the info. I'd already seen the A-1 thread in the "forum selling" section. Are there any comics shops actually IN San Francisco itself worth going to?

:shy: You can hit us (appointment only), Comic Relief, and crash Image Comics offices  all in downtown Berkeley. Plus Berkeley has a lot of energy--fun to visit. My new place is right across from UC-Berkeley and three blocks from the downtown subway.

An afternoon of Brazilian food from the corner stand, a stroll down Telegraph, and a visit to the House of Comics is well-worth a BART ride from San Francisco.

There are probably about a dozen or more comic stores in the Bay Area.

Right next to Comic Relief is a Half Price Books... and EVEN THEY have a comic section. Someone I know pulled an early Bone from there and last weekend I picked up an Iron Fist #14, Wolverine #1, 2, and 4 from there. (Left the #3 as it had major spine stresses.)

Comic Relief in Berkeley was great. I just got a double cover Strange Tales #154 there for $10 and they have a great selection of old and new stuff as well as undergrounds. Big shop and nice staff.

I'm gonna go there. as I am heading up in Feb. for my first WonderCon

Despite the fact that many comic stores in SF no longer carry old books, there are still a few that might be worth checking out depending on what you're looking for.

Al's Comics - I haven't been here yet, but will check it out someday. Seems to have a decent mix of comics:

Amazing Adventures - They have a lot of gold, silver, bronze and modern age books, and are located in the Sunset district closer to the beach:

Amazing Fantasy - They don't have as many old books, but are close to Golden Gate Park if you're planning to check it out anyway:

Comic Outpost - Another store that has a mix of silver age and up books, with mostly newer stuff:

In addition to the other non-SF stores listed in this thread, the Comic Collector Shop in Mountain View and Heroes Comics in Campbell have some nice stuff:

Enjoy your time in the city, and happy hunting!
