Per the ADA website:

DA is evidently a highly skilled specialist who is compensated well for his work. He started buying quality items when others weren't and also dealt in comics and collectibles to fund his addiction hobby.

interesting.

it's funny, because when i think about it, i can see why dentists would make six figures (pulling out teeth, putting in bridges, etc, etc), but for some reason the idea of a dentist being able to buy a six figure book seems crazy. well, you live and you learn.

you know, normally my replies kill posts. i think this is the first post i've made that didn't. lol. you guys are slippin'

You also have to consider the Japanese father/son combo that bought Gary Carter's collection.

As in the hall of famer from the Mets, Gary Carter? Or another?

As in the editor of Comic Book Marketplace magazine.

You would also have to consider Super-Snipe, the Kid with the most comics in the world!

Wow, a hall of fame baseball player AND literate enough to edit a magazine!

so, dave anderson is really a dentist?

i always wondered if that was true since he's got such an expensive collection. i don't know how much the average dentist makes salary wise, but i never thought it would be six figures.

If he wasn't a real dentist, I'd be a bit worried about how he got his nickname

well that'ss just it. he never bought any six-figure books. He bought the core of his collection back in the 70's / 80's.

Top 5 Collectors in the Country????

Just a sec, what country are we talking about? I think perhaps you meant the world ;)

Only looking at the USA for now

That reminds me, I'm curious about the Japanese comic collecting scene. Do they have one? They must do, they're practically a nation of geeks (meant in the nicest possible way!). Do they have their own manga grails? What are the most valuable and prized items? Do they have a professional grading service equivalent to CGC? These and other questions.. hm

Sorry to go off on a tangent. Just musing out loud

A Japanese dentist has the first appearance of Astro Boy. (worship)

It is supposedly in mint condition :o , but it hasn't been graded. hm

There is much speculation surrounding whether or not he will ever sell (shrug) , or if he will just

pass it down to his son (who is also an avid collector - complete Dragon Ball set!). (thumbs u

I think for GA:

Jon Berk

Dave Anderson

Steve Geppi

John Verzyl

Christine the Pepsi gal....

those are the 5 that come to my mind, but there are lots of private collectors and lots of others that have great collections based on varying criteria, like

Mr. Bedrock

Bangzoom

Eric Roberts

Ian Levine

Centaurman

Bullet123 ( Batman and 4color!)

and the list could go on and on

Geez, while thanks for the perception of confidence, I can't match up with these others. Although I have certain areas of "GA strength", I got a lot of holes. (For what, it is worth, a little known fact- i do have a complete run of Marvel Comics from 1961 through the 2000s- the basis for Ernie's Photo Journal on Marvels)

It is more the diversity and esoteric nature of some of my books, that gives it some flavor and notoriety. And, of course, it is the fun factor that leads me to share on the boards.
