Tim Vigil fans?

With the popularity of the Tim Vigil series Faust from 1988 still selling well, how come his earlier work in Grips doesn't command any attention? I know they made a movie of Faust in 2001, but it wasn't well received. What makes his Faust series still collectable, but not his first work in comics?

I think the art in Faust in 10x better than Grips. I don't know about the story. I bought Faust 1 from Vigil in Chicago in 87 or 88? I totally forgot it was a limited cover and sold it to a buddy for too cheap. I wonder what those go for in 9.4/9.6?

faust is pornographic while grips is not, fanboys = dateless geeks.

Too bad we can't have a "FAUST Appreciation" thread.

"Grips" portfolios are on eBay quite frequently and 9 times out of 10 they go unsold.

As said before, Faust art is much better than Grips art and the stories are 180 out.

Faust is a much superior book; the level of detail, the draughtsmanship, the caliber of inking, all superior. One other thing to consider: Silverwolf was a company formed much earlier in the B&W boom and not as widely distributed compared to Northstar. My recollection is that 1988 was a real boom year for comic readership, so that contributes.

The 1992 implosion negatively effected the independent publishers and Tim/Rebel was not spared, but he's hung in there and published an issue of Faust pretty much every other year since then. Fourteen and fifteen, the final issue, should be out in the next 18 months, I would think.

EO is a brutal book viscerally (literally), and probably is a larger contributor to the Vigil's infamous reputation. It's a book that will likely never be finished, only 2 of 4 published, and a yoke around the neck back in 1992; overprinted can't describe the situation.

I'm sure you've read it, but I must say that Gothic Nights is Vigil's best work, artistically superior to everything else he's published.

I own a complete Grips mini series though I haven't looked at those comics for probably 15 years now. I do remember it vividly though because of the circumstances surrounding my first reading of it. I had just finished reading a series of Marvel and DC comics that weren't exactly action packed. I then picked up my issues of Grips to read. It sort of made the mainstream Marvels and DCs I was reading seem extremely lame.

Modern comics are far more violent now but back in the 80's Grips was a stand out title in that department.

I'll have to dig them out and give them another go.

What then pray tell would you be doing here then? Looking to pick up fanboys?

Faust is also crazy as S**T! :roflmao:

Both the character & in storytelling (if you can call it that)

Yeah, I agree. I wish Tim had drawn some more mainstream material, but I actually suspect that his work on all that blood drenched material has made it nigh impossible for him to land a gig with Marvel or DC.

Pity because I like the lean muscle tone displayed in his renderings of women.

:(

Speaking of Tim Vigil, anyone ever heard of this book? It's titled "EO," and the disclaimer "Not for children" is 100% accurate.

I have a few Fausts from back when they first came out and it was, shall we say, extreme. I never got a copy of EO but I heard that it made Faust seem tame.

I'm really glad I'm not the only one who likes Grips! I like it every bit as much as faust - in some ways more (story is a little less crazy, more of a "down to earth"/plausible plot).
